I think the fact that I’m a lakers fan is good enough to get me in. Being a lakers fan means i’m better than everyone else, i’m a champion, and everyone is scared to compete with me. back2back this yr btw

lol beautiful

@lakerforever

What kind of involvement did you have with fiscal affairs? Was your student gov position officer level?

so which essay question are most people going to answer? -just asking out of curiosity

personally I’m leaning towards the second one…though I’ll probably flip-flop a bit over the weekend lol

@Cupertino: i was just an officer. this was my first yr so it’s hard for me to convince other incumbents to get them to elect me as VP

@lomkh: i’m going to do the 1st one. it gives me more of an opportunity to describe myself and stand out. the 2nd one wouldn’t really help them “paint a picture” of us since it is school related. they can just look at our grades for that one

i’m working on my resume right now. on my general UC app i put some HS stuff for ECs, awards, and work experience. But on the Haas resume they only want post HS stuff…so what r u guys gonna put on there? should i put president’s list in the rewards sections and honors program in ECs?

i was leaning towards putting honors program in awards/honors because i wouldn’t know what to put for position if i put it in EC’s or hours per week or any of that information…seems simpler to just say when i joined the program and what the program entails in the description…

Interesting, I didn’t put any high school stuff in my UC app, I was always advised against that.

For the self-reported academic record, under “Total # of Major Prerequisite Courses
(Completed, In Progress, and Planned for spring term)” and “Total # of Breadth Courses
(Completed, In Progress, and Planned for spring term)” they just want us to put the total number of courses we listed right?

awayforcollege, that’s what I took it as… I wasn’t sure whether to count my AP Lit test as a course or not. I ended up not because it isn’t a class- go figure lol.

I could use a little advice on transferable courses:

I’m using a 5 on the AP Lit test to satisfy the R1A and R1B reading requirement. I also took an additional English course at my state university, and this class would have satisfied the R1B requirement if I hadn’t already satisfied it.

My question is whether this course satisfies my Literature/Writing Requirement. The purpose of this requirement confuses me a little bit… is it just that we need to have a third English class?

Here are the directions on the articulation agreement with a local CC:

Literature/Writing Requirement:

This requirement is in addition to the English/Reading and Composition
requirement listed below.

-This requirement must be satisfied by the completion of a literature/writing
course offered by the English, English Literature or English Writing
departments.

-English/Reading and Composition and ESL courses cannot be used to fulfill this
requirement.

-The course must be UC-Transferable for at least 3 semester or 4 quarter units.

What gets me is the “English/Reading and Composition and ESL courses cannot be used to fulfill this requirement” statement. Does this just mean that one class can’t cover both requirements, but if we already satisfied the English/Reading and Composition requirement then an English class that satisfies either requirement can be used towards the Literature requirement?

i’m also confused about the literature requirement…i was going to take a specific literature course during my spring quarter however a counselor told me that a critical thinking class i’m taking from the english department also meets the requirement…not sure if i trust the counselors entirely, so i’ll be calling haas later to see if they can help me clarify…

So I called Haas to check out what the answer was… and I’m sure glad I did.

The Literature requirement has to be satisfied by courses other than the ones that will satisfy the English/ Reading and Composition requirement. It says this pretty clearly, I just wasn’t sure.

lomkh, your counselor is probably right… as long as that critical thinking course is an English class and doesn’t equate R1A or R1B at Berkeley, then you’re set.

Of course I would definitely call to make sure =)

the LITERATURE requirement is NOT the same as the Composition/REading requirement!! in other words, u need to satisfy BOTH requirements.

For example, at my school i need 2 classes to complete the comp/read requirement. So i can’t use any one of the 2 classes i took to satsify my literature requirement. I need to take a THIRD class. Now this class can be anything in the English department. you can even take an additional comp/reading english class if u so choose. But it has to be a different eng class that u used to satisfy the comp/read requirement.

these english requirements are actually the biggest reasons why people get rejected. most aplpicants think that the read/comp requirement satisfy the lang requirement.

lakerforever24, that’s exactly why I called them… I thought that as you said that “you can even take an additional comp/reading english class,” which is misleading in that context…

You have to take a class OTHER than the classes that generally satisfy the R1A and R1B requirement (usually the lowest two basic english classes at any university).

------I just want to clarify so that nobody else tries to list those basic classes as satisfying their Literature requirement if they had already satisfied the Reading/Composition requirement.

For example, I did well on my AP Lit test and don’t have to take either of the Reading/Composition classes… HOWEVER, I still took the class that would have filled in the R1B requirement because it is required at my current university… and this course CANNOT be used to satisfy my Literature requirement even though it’s not being used anywhere else.

So you’re right in the three class requirement… but if you are exempt for any reason from the first two Reading/Composition classes then you need to make sure that the English class that you do take is not one that is equivalent to R1A or R1B

^^yea. that’s what i meant…sort of

anyway, did u complete all the prereqs/breadth or do u have any in progess for spring?

and for the general UC update site, did u put IP (in progress) or PL (planned) for the courses ur taking in spring? For the “myberkeleyapp” site it clearly tells us to put PL for spring. but for the general uc update one it just tells us to put what grade we got for spring 2010…(A,B,C,D,F, or P/NP)…no option for IP or PL

okay, thanks sandiegostateguy, i feel a lot better about taking one less class now, though i’ll still call them because i’ll be asking them a question about the math requirement anyways…though maybe you guys would know the answer to my question for that too, so haas says i need to take 1 semester or 1 quarter (just at my cc) of math…though assist lists it as MATH 1A (basic derivatives)…i think i’ll have to take that so i have it planned for my spring quarter, though i’ve taken a semester of MATH 3B (integration) and i’m currently taking a quarter of MATH 1D (3 courses later in the same series as math 1A, multivariable calculus right before linear algebra and differential equations)…i’m wondering if the two more advanced math classes i’ve taken can also meet the requirement and save me from wasting my time in a class about basic derivatives lol

lomkh: yea…u should definitely just call them

also, here’s a youtube video i found from haas

[YouTube - UC Berkeley Mr. Business 2009 (Gay) Dance](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zap7Olh2_4M)

lomkh, I’m with lakerforever… I’d call them lol. I’d be pretty surprised if they make you go back and take an entry level calculus class after you’re obviously already way ahead of that.

and lakerforever, I still have 3 breadth to do over Spring but I haven’t looked at the UC update yet so I can’t help =/

For the UC update I think I’m going to leave the “Grade” box empty for Spring 10 classes, it’s what I did with the original application.

^yea i found out that that’s what we’re supposed to do

awesome! thanks
