Official Fall 2010 Transfer Thread!

Oh also, I’ve never taken a Sci course in college. I took courses related to Psych like Sociology, Psych, Philosophy, Statistics, etc. And the basics of course.

I think you have a solid chance, @longhornbyheart. Sounds like you have great stats and your GPA is already above the minimum (3.0) and competitive is 3.5. Last semester someone posted and said that if you had a 3.5 for COLA you were pretty much in.

Thanks Solo! I’m just worried because I dropped a Bio course and it might count against me :|

you should get in , people get in COLA with 3.4s

Hey Everyone,

I just called the Admissions Office to inquire about what I should do if I were rejected and I wanted to reapply for Spring 2010. I was told by the very nice and patient lady that if I were to be rejected, and I am taking classes now, that I should send in an appeal because you never know how close you were to being “competitive”.

Does anyone know where I can find more information on how I would go about doing that? I can only find an appeal process for freshman applicants.

@EndlessEnigma37 What were your stats?

Does anyone know if I HAVE to take science courses at UT for the Fall of 2010 once I get accepted? Or can I take those at CC next summer (2011) so I can concentrate on other subjects? I am applying as a Bachelor of Arts major in Psychology at COLA.

My not-so-impressive stats:

GPA: 3.36
Hours: 61*
College: COLA

*I received several credits by taking the CLEP, although doing this saved money and time, it could have helped my GPA in the long run if I would have just taken the classes.

With that said, I am very aware that this is by no means the best or even the average GPA they are going to see. That is why I also sent 3 LOR’s (Professional, Academic, and Personal), the required documentation with emphasis on strengths and potential contributions, and EC’s that made me stand out. Looking back, I should have sent an optional essay explaining the circumstances under which my GPA suffered and how it fails to reflect my academic potential; however, what is done is done. I am still waiting but I am being cautious because like thousands of others, this is my first choice and anything else would almost feel like I am settling for mediocrity.

@longhornbyheart

Are you talking about the 9hours of core requirements in science?? I believe you can take those at ACC, just be sure to check that they count!!

Reject by Natural Science-Math…
International, Out-of-state, currently in a top 10 public
Freshman, Fall gpa 3.93, recommendation letter from Stat professor and communication instructor, Stat undergraduate TA, voluntary student organization
I think it is because my transferrable credits are below 30…could anyone give me some advice? I have family member in Austin so UT is the first on my list
Does anyone think I should contact them to ask whether the 30 credit is the main reason they reject me? I think I will try again for Fall 2011… Thanks!

@EndlessEnigma You can always try by Spring of 2011 if you want to get in faster. That being said, also do your hardest to bring your GPA up. If you want to get in to COLA, people have told me that the “guaranteed” yet unspoken GPA is 3.5. Good luck!

@msolo45 Yup the core science requirements like 2 classes of Bio lecture and 2 of Bio lab, etc. Can I also take that in my community college? I live in Fort Worth. Hopefully I could, but I will definitely check. If admitted, I am planning to take those next summer since those are the only core that I haven’t completed.

@pnc You must have at least 30 to apply. Also, UT definitely favors people from Texas. But your GPA is quite impressive, competition in the Sci dept is just really really tough.

@ pnc

wait, admissions can’t make decisions until you have 30. did you apply with, say… 22 hours and are currently completing the rest? if that’s the case, i don’t see how they could have rejected you without looking at your application before you sent them your completed hours.

@pnc

"Evaluation of individual courses taken at out-of-state institutions is not available over the phone, in person, or by e-mail. Specific course evaluations and decisions about the transferability of individual courses are made only after an applicant has been admitted. "

according to the website they don’t check to see if your credits are transferable until they admit you…so i don’t see how that would be the case? i think they just look to see if you have 30+ credits then after they admit, they review all the courses you’ve taken. it would take forever to review everyone’s courses to see if all transferred in order to admit/reject people. but if you didn’t have 30+ hours when you applied, idk how they already let you know their decision?

@longhornbyheart

Thank you for the advice :slight_smile: However, I have not received a decision…yet. I am simply preparing for a possible rejection. I called admissions with the sole purpose of asking about reapplying for Spring 2011 ( Is there a credit limit? When should I resubmit my application? Should I rewrite my essays? ,etc.) It was at this time that I was advised to appeal. Thus, back to the original problem at hand…

Does anyone know how a prospective transfer should go about appealing a decision?

@EndlessEnigma You’re very welcome! As for reapplying for Spring 2011, the credit limit will always be a minimum of 30. You should resubmit it probably by October. The earlier the better. Yes, if it would be possible, write BETTER essays. There’s always room for improvement.

If you were already rejected, write a letter of appeal accompanied with lots of evidence as to why they should reconsider their decision. Send it to the Admissions office. My brother is currently a UT student and his friend was in the same position.

Hope this helps!

Is it late to apply for off campus housing during July? like Castilian and Dobie?

Accepted to Chemical Engineering at Cockrell

UW - Madison
GPA: 3.821

Ok so I was rejected with a 3.54 GPA for Natural Sciences-Physics and 2nd Choice COLA-undeclared. I’m out-of-state and international and I really want to apply for Spring 2011 but at the same time, if there’s anyway I can appeal the rejection I wanna give it a try!! So please could you tell us how to go about appealing it. I had 30 credits (i think) since I’m in the quarter system it’s a bit different and I still have the spring quarter going on which ends in June. Is there anyway I still have a chance of getting in after appealing or on the other hand, is it worth applying for Spring 2011 or will i still get rejected. Help!! :(

For my application I put down that i wanted to do premed (for the part that says premed,dent,law ect.) , but I wanted to get into mccombs/COLA. Does the fact that i said that change my chances? I dont want to do premed anymore so i’m gonna call and hopefully get rid of that but just wondering if anyone knows

anyone still waiting to hear back? I have over 30 hours, applied pre-nursing, and still no news…

@ vedasultanfus I also applied for pre-nursing though I haven’t completed the thirty hours yet… Do you mind sharing your stats?
