*Official Fall 2010 UC Transfer CHANCE thread*

I think anyone with a 4.0 is already in wherever they wanna go… as long as they finished the prereqs and igetc haha. so jealous :p

My first choice is UCLA!

Major: Economics
UC GPA: 3.88
Applying to: UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSD, UCSB, UCI, USC
Prereqs: Completed before applying.
IGETC: One more science class in spring.
TAG/TAP: TAG and TAP certified
ECs: Nothing crazy to impress… haha
Essay: Decent

absurdmike, you’re in for sure!!!
especially its not the most competitive major out there.
i would say 90% you’re in

Major: Political Science
UC GPA: 3.84
Applying to: UC Berkeley, UCLA
Prereqs: All will be completed by spring, statistics being the last one

bump…

Major: Women and Gender Studies

Applying to: UCLA, Berkeley, UCSD, UCI
Prereqs: There were none
IGETC: Just have one more humanities class set up for Spring.
TAG/TAP: UCSD

I can’t wait until the end of april!!! But I guess I will have to. Good luck everybody!

Major: History
UC GPA: 3.3-ish (major GPA: 3.75, I’ve heard they glance over it)
Applying to: UCD, UCI, UCLA, UCSB, UCSD, UCSC
Prereqs: Completed by Spring
IGETC: Completed by Spring
TAG/TAP: not certified
ECs: Volunteer at UCLA’s Fowler Museum: Archaeology department, member of various youth organizations (including being an executive of some of the groups), lots of activism, et cetera. Long list of stuff.
Essay: Decent? Can’t give myself a score; various professors looked it over for me.
Other: Although not TAP certified this semester, I have taken honors courses and they are listed on my application, perhaps they’ll be taken into account? Did poorly freshman year (first two semesters I got an F (retaken) and two C’s), got my act together during the summer, been getting nearly all A’s since; upward trend (~3.75). Personal issues were explained in my personal statement, and how I was able to resolve them during the summer (every low GPA applicant seems to have them, huh?).

Major: Economics
UC GPA: 3.88
Major GPA so far; 4
Applying to: UCB, UCLA, UCSB, UCD, UCSC
Prereqs:4 Needed;
MacroEconomics A
MicroEconomics A
Calculas 1 A
Calculas 2 Planned Spring 2010!wow calc one was…haaaarrrrdddcoore
IGETC: completed by this spring
TAG/TAP: Tap for UCBerkeley, CCCP scholar for UCLA
I never understood the ucLA tap
ECs: Good, Taught math, business and economics to middle school students.
Essay; I would subjectively say that they were 8/10. 10 revisions! Freakin took some life out of me. well structured and answered questions clearly.
Other: UCLA SITE 2009 CCCP scholar, which I have been told looks really good for UCLA.

absurdmike- Im curious to know if you mentioned your light class load in the essays?? You have a great GPA so I would think your 8/10 into top tiers

theregoesevan- If you essay makes up for your gpa, you have a fair shot at UCLA and UCb

killerforhire; You dont mention how strong your essays are…?.but I would say that you have a good chance. I know someone who got in with a 3.86 for Polisci.

Levonid- Im glad you applied broadly because I see a lot of people refuse to check of the box because of their gpa. im sure that you are aware that your gpa is not as high as many applicants, but you clearly have some circumstances that impeded on your academic achievements and mentioning them was imperative for your essay. They always like to see those upward trends as well.

By the way, i have upward trend in my grades. 4.0 for past 6 semesters and retook the one class that I received the C in for an A but it doesnt make my overall gpa.
Please chance me

Major: Economics or Mathematics/Economics

UC GPA: 3.877 as of right now, and upward exponential trend. B’s in humanity classes (if that makes a difference).

Applying to: UCB (econ), UCLA (math econ), UCSD (math econ), UCSC (math econ), and UCSB (math econ)

Prereqs: 1 left: I need differential equations (will get A). Not going to take c++ for UCLA (I could but don’t want to because I would have to go to another college…)

IGETC: Certified

TAG/TAP: No

ECs: Was VP and President of a business club; President of a science club; was in honor society; was a senator; volunteered. Work as a college tutor in economics, computer, and mathematics (up to vector calculus) 15 hrs a week.

Essay: Talked to a Berkeley admission officer she said I ‘hit the nail on the head.’ Overall, I think it was O.K in some areas and great in others; above average but not top tier in my opinion.

Extra: I received an award from the mayor for volunteering, and gold and silver awards from the school. I also received some other stuff too…
Other: Caucasian; first generation college student.

Also, what is better for econ/math econ: ucsd, ucsb, and ucsc? Please give reasons why. I think UCSD is really amazing but I don’t like the campus. Also, which schools have the best resources for internships and jobs, particularly for finance and economic analysis jobs. Not sure if I want to go to professional school-yet.

Please chance. Thanks. Good luck. Sorry for poor grammar!

@ EastbayUCC
Given that you get A’s in all your classes, it is safe to assume you will get in to all those colleges. The only one I am not sure is UCLA. I had a friend who had over a 3.9gpa get rejected from UCLA, while I had a friend who had like a 3.5 or 3.6 got in their bus econ. Cal pretty much accepts more than UCLA; I think its easier to get in, but its still a better school!

Major: Global Studies
UC GPA: 3.72
Applying to: UCLA, UCB, UCI, UCSD, UCSB
Prereqs: Will be done in spring
IGETC: Will be done in spring
TAG/TAP: TAP @ UCLA
ECs: Student Government, Honors Society, Work Experience (Assistant Manager), etc.
Essay: I would say an 8/10
Other: first generation to attend college

TheBIGshow- thank you for the response. I have also heard from several transfers that they were denied from ucla and accepted into ucb, thats so wierd!..?.. One student i know was accepted into haas with 3.2! its a crazy system.
UCLA might even be my first choice being that im a bay area native.

Im really impressed by your recognition and EC’s as well! damn, i wish I had been awarded by the mayor…gosh! Have you completed calc 2?

@ EastbayUCC

Thanks. Yes, I have completed calc 2, and just completed calc 3 last semester. For me, calc 3 was harder.

Edit; well, most people tell me that calc 2 was the hardest. Sure, I think that some of the integral techniques are hard, but if you approach them as a puzzle and that if you enjoy challenges, it should not be too bad. Maybe it was easy for me because I had an easy teacher (in my opinion) and that I am pretty good at math in general. If your good with equations, particularly just “grinding them out,” then you should be fine. Though, if you had a hard time with calc 1, you may need to put more emphasis in calc 2; it is important in my opinion. Hope this helps.

Major: Economics
UC GPA: 3.62
Applying to: UCB, UCLA, UCD, UCSD
Prereqs: Only Calc 2 left, will be done in Spring 10
IGETC: One class left for Spring 10
TAG/TAP: TAG for Davis and I guess UCSD too
ECs: Student worker in the President’s Office at my school
Essay 9.9/10 Talked about my transition from thinking of school as a punishment to being a great student and I absolutely love my essays.
Other: I’m an older student. I was horrible in my first couple semesters and I had to drop out of school. Got my head on straight and came back. Since then, I have taken 55 units with a GPA of 3.93

I think everyone that has posted so far has an excellent shot at their top choice. Nothing but a bunch of winners in my book.

@cooldude6

I think you have a good shot at berkeley. You are in at UCD and UCSD. Not sure about UCLA; I think a 3.8-3.9 is competitive. However, there are many too many variables to determine whether you’re in or out. You have unique circumstances which may aid you…

Major: Business Econ (UCLA), Business (UCI), Econ (Davis/Berkeley), Management Science (SD)
UC GPA: 3.7
Applying to: Cal, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCI, UCSC
Prereqs: done by spring
IGETC: done by spring
TAG/TAP: only for SD
ECs: club coordinator/leader, CC sports, outside sports, lots of different EC’s, work experience
Essay: 8/10, i put a lot of effort into them.
Other:

cooldude- if your essays were really good about how you changed you have a good shot at UCLA and UCB
makin it rain- only thing i would be worried about is Econ at Berkeley and Business Econ at UCLA but you have a good shot.

Major:
UC GPA: 4.0 (through 51 credits, taking 16 spring semester)
Applying to: UCLA UCB UCSD UCSB
Prereqs:I won’t have exactly 60 UC transferable credits and I only am taking an intro language class which doesn’t fulfill the two year foreign language requirement
IGETC: I’m out of state so i don’t have this
TAG/TAP:
ECs: President Democratic Club, President Business Club, volunteer at my Dads hospital, special olympics.
Essay- talked about my transition from getting poor grades in high school to succeeding in college.
Other: worked as a lifeguard, studying abroad in rome and taking a lot of upper level business courses (300 level)

The only thing I’m worried about is that they require 60 UC transferable credits and not all of my credits will transfer. In addition, I’m an out of stater and that hurts my chances.

Major: Business Econ (UCLA, UCI, UCR), Economics (UCSD), Business Econ & Accting (UCSB), Business Admin (CPSLO)

UC GPA: 3.96

Applying to: UCLA, UCI, UCR, UCSD, UCSB, and SLO-- I regret not applying to CAL.

Prereqs: Will complete Calc 2 and microecon this spring and BusLaw for SLO this spring as well, for UCSB, I’ll be missing the Stats course.

IGETC: one more that will be completed this winter

TAG/TAP: TAG for UCSD and TAP for UCLA

ECs: VP of AGS, member in PTK, member in FBLA, member in the general honors program, intern and do accounting work

Essay: 9/10

@cooldude6: I agree, you do have a good shot at CAL. Definitely in at UCD and UCSD. The GPA is a little weak for UCLA, but you still have a shot.

@makin it rain: You’re definitely in at UCSD and UCD. I’d say you’re still competitive for CAL, it may sound harsh, but no shot at UCI–they will only be taking about 15 students in their Bus Admin major, most likely with 4.0s, and it looks like a long shot for UCLA, but you do have the EC’s so there is still a chance.

@p8nthrower89
I think it is auto-reject if you do not have a min. of 60 uc transferable units. Can someone verify this?

@thebigsh0w: I think so too unless you’re applying as a freshman with college credits.
