So i’m applying to transfer to UPenn,
My current college grades aren’t amazing (3.5) but I am applying from a very prestigous university (Columbia University).
What are my chances for SAS?

^why do u wana leave columbia? and ya a 3.5 from columbia is actually pretty good dw

Issues with my major not being available, sort of sucks because columbia is a good school

^question how hard is it to maintain a high gpa at columbia for majors like sociology or urban studies… do you have to kill yourself for a 3.7+ in those majors?

Sociology (at least in the early years) is pretty manageable compared to other majors. The issue at a school like columbia is that everyone here is pretty smart, so it becomes harder to get to those higher grades. For instance my econ class is curved to a B-, which means 40% of kids who had SATs >1400 will get C’s. What I’m trying to say is if youre talented at sociology you can scrape off a 3.7 without trying, if not you will have to bust your ass. In comparison to other majors though it falls under the moderately easy/competitive spectrum. Sorry i cant give you an exact description, a lot is dependent on you.

since when did this become a columbia thread…

^ i just asked him a question? lets chills…

I thought Columbia has a 4.3 max. That reminds me, do the top schools know various school’s max schools? For example, a 4.0 usually sounds good, but is less amazing if it’s a 4.0/4.3. Colleges’ grading systems are more standardized than high schools’ but who knows.

yes they know they look into stuff like that

wow my previous post was totally incoherent. I had meant to say “do the top schools know various schools’ max gpa’s”

but if they know, will chrisarg72 be viewed more unfavorably? A 3.5/4.3 doesn’t sound amazing but it might be bumped up a few since it’s from Columbia.

IDK-we’ll find out in less than a week… There’s a million things taken into account and it’s random we’ll never be able to predict.

It says decisions will be made May 12th, and if any further documents were required you would be contacted. What about spring grades? If they needed these would we have gotten an email?.. does this mean that if they made a decision without needing to see your spring grades you wouldn’t have gotten the e-mail? Did anyone get a notification saying they needed to send in spring grades?

kc - if you didn’t get any email from their admissions office, then you’re fine :)

spring grades are due once you’ve been accepted. the final spring grades are not considered initially but if they fall far too low, an acceptance can be rescinded. however, mid-term spring grades were in fact required.

^ Yeah, I was contacted to send in my midterm grades by the regional admissions officer…

When were you contacted? And was it an email?

^ I was contacted around May 3, and I had to scramble to send it to them.

I heard if you are asked to provide missing documents that are not crucially important, you will probably get in… It is also possible that they only started to read your file on the 3rd. When did you submit your app?

^ ya smarts… if they asked you for a midterm report that more or less means your in… early congrats!

transfer9858,
i definitely do not see the request of a document indicative of an acceptance. from where are you basing this assumption off of?
