@ucuwned15 It’s not. There have been cases where students have gotten their letters and their transcript didn’t load untill after a couple of days. don’t worry you’ll be fine. Have faith!

guys is it true that international students dont get a direct admit to their major? if so how possible is it to get into it after freshman/soph yr/

Hey @SoccerGuy, my daughter is also an international school in India. She got accepted too… waiting for Direct admit decision to CSE department. Anyone got the Direct admit decision already?

@SD2018Dad the direct admission decision comes 2 weeks later. i applied for cse too but i might not go to uw seattle if i dont get in as a direct admit

do you get notified if you got denied a direct acceptance? @soccerguy7

@SoccerGuy7 Did you get any other U? Is UW your dream college?

@Rusty34 you get an email saying whether or not you got into the department. If you didnt you are a “pre-engineering” major
@SD2018Dad UW is not my dream school but its definitely one im considering. They have an amazing CSE program. Ive gotten into 4 other uni’s and am waiting on 6 other decisions

@SoccerGuy7 well i won’t get a pre-engineering major. I’m from the Commerce side, they should probably hand me Economics in College of Arts and Sciences.

@Rusty34 if uve applied for economics, you might get economics and if you dont you will get the corresponding pre-major to it. thats basically what i was trying to say

@NinRash: It doesn’t mean anything. They don’t submit paperwork for direct admits to ‘get into’ the major until the summer. =)

For example: for me, I was “Pre-science” until August, even though I accepted the direct admit offer during the Spring.

@speedsolver. My son got admiited. got the letter yesterday. But there is no major mentioned. He applied for CS. and when I saw his official transcript online today, it said “pre-science”. When is the major given?

@bullcomp Official direct admit notifications should be sent out during the first week of April.

If you get your welcome packet before then, it might say “computer science”. A subset of direct admit acceptances will see this, though I’m not sure how they determine that.

@speedsolver… Thanks for the feedback. Which major is good at UW? Computer Science or Computer Engineering? which najor -CS or CE is good and job/internships etc at UW?

I’d rather not rant…hope I get in!!!

@bullcomp: CS and CE are under the same department and are very similar. It depends on what your son is looking for! CE has more of a hardware/physics component, while CS is more theoretical. However, you can take hardware courses as a CS major and vice versa.

They’re both great for jobs/internships! Of course, if you want to work somewhere like Lab126 (Creates Amazon Kindle hardware), a CE degree may be more attractive to the recruiters. Both CS and CE majors end up in great places like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft, along with medium to smaller sized companies, like Dropbox or other startups.

From my observations, I think more CS majors end up going to graduate school (although this isn’t a representation of actual grad school acceptance stats). A number of them also major in math and are interested in the more theoretical, research side of things.

@speedsolver… Thank you for the feedback. I agree with you. CE could be more practical and hands on to take the job immediately where as CS is more theoretical if one wants to go to MS/research

@speedsolver.Just curious… are you a student at UW?

@bullcomp No problem! Either CS or CE can lead to great opportunities (industry or otherwise) right after graduation.

Yep, I’m a senior studying computer science.

@speedsolver… Good to know that you are doing CS. if we decide with UW, how can we get hold of you, when we visit? spring open house?

@bullcomp: Feel free to PM me if you’re planning on visiting since I might miss thread messages. =) If you plan on touring the CSE department or the direct admit open house (fingers crossed for everyone here!), I’ll most likely be there if I don’t have any other obligations.
