I’m still unclear on the GPA for GT. Do they recalculate or not?

no recaculation of gpa this year. went to special admission event at tech last week and they said that was a difference for this year.

Could this possible mean that SAT scores will have a bigger weight? Since GPA are all on different scales, and you can’t usually compare one student’s gpa to the another, and since there’re more competition from the common app switch.

May2013- No they said that since they were switching to the common app that they were just trying to streamline things. Recaculating GPAs took a lot of time. Now that they receive counselor reports with a high schools’ profile they will look at that in making evaluation of a student’s gpa.

They want to see how you did in the context of your school. A 4.2 isn’t necessarily better than a 4.0 especially if the 4.2 is out of 5 and the 4.0 is out of 4

Also a 4.0 may not be as good as it sounds if the student took the easier versions of the classes that the high school offered. For example regular physics instead of STEM physics or the regular math track when there were higher tracks they could have taken or not many AP’s when they had plenty offered…I think the question is something like: Did this student take the most rigorous classes available…

MichiganGeorgia- that is exactly what they discussed especially in the context of how active a student is in school A student who takes 5 APs but doesn’t do much else isn’t the same as a student who takes 3 APs but is very engaged in two or three things very consistently throughout high school. They kept on talking about showing them specific examples and giving them as much detail about what a student does.

I don’t know how true this is, or where I remember reading this, but I remember seeing someone say that GT is relying on admission counselors who visit high schools to provide context on the rigor of a school’s curriculum.

Also, how important is UW GPA to Georgia Tech? I see them talk a lot about weighted, but not about unweighted

I think they’re just going to look at weighted. The reason is that school’s have different levels of difficulty with respect to how hard it is to get an A(this is how the school report works). For instance, the valedictorians at some schools could have 3.7 UW. Based on that, you would look at that 3.7 more like you would look at a 4.0 at other schools. If at another school, you see that the valedictorian has a 4.0 and you see many applicants from that same school with 4.0s, then you begin to look less at raw GPA and more at rigor. If they have an adequate rigor, my guess is that they would then look at SAT, ECs, and essays, and finally the extra items that the applicant sent (teacher recs, subject tests, AP scores). If there are plenty of qualified applicants from a school, then there will be a lot of admits from that school as well.
Disclaimer: this is all really just speculation. I’m not on the Admissions Committee, but I’m just basing it off of common sense. Also, with respect to GPA, they’ll probably take into consideration grade trends.

They completely disregard the reading and science sections of the act, right?

That is correct.

Anyone want to do a quick “chance me”? I’m interested in electrical/mechanical engineering. (most likely electrical)

This is really rushed, but academic-wise, would i qualify for scholarship?

^ I don’t know what kind of scholarship you are referring to but I wouldn’t count on it.
Your best bet may be a scholarship like my son got. It was an alumni scholarship. If you get accepted EA you can apply for them. The deadline for applying is pretty short if I recall correctly. Something like the end of December to beginning of January maybe?

@chungdam1

Assuming you get a 2100+, you have a great shot. If not, your SAT will really be holding you down.

i was referring to academic scholarships that georgia tech might award me. So no chance?

^ I have no idea. It just seems like there are a lot of kids and only so many scholarships. GT is not a university with automatic merit scholarships. Therefore it is better to not count on getting one.

I sent in my application- how long will it take for Georgia Tech to send me a confirmation email?

hey guys!
i am an international student. i already submitted the common app and the writing supplement. i even got the confirmation email. but when i log in to buzzport, it says my GMAT score is missing but that doesnt make sense because i am applying for a BS in Computer Engineering.
it says wait 3-5 weeks for processing but should i be worried?

I too submitted my application yesterday morning. Is it normal for the confirmation email to take this long?
