It is finished my friends.
@itdoesntmatter, are you implying that non-nerds heading to GT need to join the group to find their peeps?
@Chardo Nope.
@itdoesntmatter Should I join if I’m not sure that I want to go to GT due to fin aid?
@Jboon12345 you sound salty about something.

Deferred.
Does anyone know the chances of getting admitted once deferred?? I’ll probably end with a 4.0 weighted GPA, taking AP English, AP Calc BC, AP Chem, AP Bio, and AP Physics C. Do they make their final decision based on senior grades?
@bkamber Last year around 20% of deferred applicants were ultimately accepted
Accepted

SAT: 750W

IGCSE 9: CCBBBBAA
IGSCE 10: AAAAAAA*B
For 2015 11,700 students applied early action and closer to 27,000 applied so far. Final acceptance rate will be about 31% for a class size of about 2700-2800.
Which, I mean, wasn’t the RD% something like 24% last year? It had to be pretty low since the EA % was like 40ish% and the overall % was 33%. So, I’d say a deferred student has about the same shot as anyone who applied RD. Put some serious effort into that deferred essay. If your grades, course rigor, and SAT/ACT scores were up to par, focus on your ECs and your essays. Look up stuff by the GT director of admissions (Rick Clark I think?). He outlines very clearly what they look for in a student. Keep in touch with your admissions counselor without sounding whiny (ask genuine questions, etc.). Do this and you’re ahead of the pack. Don’t give up hope. I was deferred back in the day then put in the summer session. The summer session ended up being absolutely amazing: I highly recommend it. If you still don’t get in and want to go to Tech, there are programs like TAG and RETP that will almost guarantee that you’ll get in after you meet the requirements. You save money doing this and get the boring, GPA-killer classes out of the way (all the maths, physics, matlab, etc.). With the effort that all of you have clearly shown in high school, keep it up and you’ll succeed no matter where you end up. Heck, the smartest kids in my (grad) class last semester were from a small state school here in GA. Really, it sucks right now, but it’ll be ok.
23% of the 2015 Early action apps were deferred. 45% were accepted. My son started in Fall of 2013 where the average overall acceptance rate was 41% and last year was 33%. Dropped due to the big increase in applications from starting to use the Common App. He had 2050 overall SAT, 30 ACT but he was accepted into the Honors program, his three roommates are also in the Honors program (they all tend to stay together) but are also Presidential Scholars (only 50 get this - its essentially free school for 4 years) and he beat them all with a 4.0 last semester. Only about 125 make into the honors program out of 2800. I understand the average SAT score of the EA acceptances is just under 2200 this year. He studies 6+ hours a day and said you absolutely have to have excellent time management skills. Re the concerns about low GPAs. The average GPA in Engineering for the Freshmen/Sophomores who are all grouped together in GT Fact reports is 3.07 for Fall 2014, 2.99 in computing and 3.37 in the business school. So yes the average 4.0 high school student will see a drop in GPA. It all depends on the effort. Definitely go to the TAs whenever there is a question. They are a big help. GT has tremendous facilities and programs for helping students. 95% make it to the sophomore year. 40% graduate in 4 years since so many do coops which stretches their time out to 5+ years. It is a great school.

Anyone know how the Honors College works?
Yes. The school chooses 125 students that they consider well rounded; that may include community service, athletics, music (almost all of the honors kids in my son’s class play instruments) and grades. Its not about just grades and you do not have to have a 4.0, although most likely are close since 50 of these kids are selected for the Presidential Scholarship. You do not necessarily receive any merit money for being in the Honors program, although many that are from Georgia get the Hope Scholarship, free tuition to any student with a B average, which is annoying to out of state students with an A average who get nothing. They live together in Perry - Matheson dorms first year. They are required to take a specific number of honors courses in the Honors program that similar to core courses but are smaller classes and more intense / participative. There are also unique elective courses that are not given in any other major, like studying the Socio impact of Baseball or Trees and the impact on a city environment, etc… There are luncheons but not many. The idea is to broaden your mind. The program is still fairly new. Its biggest attraction is probably having it on your transcript. They have new leadership this year and almost 50% of the Honors students have Highest Honors Awards, or over a 3.55 GPA. You need at least a 3.4 to be eligible for GT Grad School and with a 3.4, you do not have to take the GREs if you stay at Georgia Tech. Change schools and you have to take the GRE.
@corpcomp—so it’s an application process? Or, do you have to be selected to apply?
Those that are offered early action are the pool that the school selects from.
@corpcomp Does everyone from EA get invited to apply?
Invitations go out tomorrow. http://www.honorsprogram.gatech.edu/content/georgia-tech-honors-program-application-process
If anybody gets an email about the honors program, post it here please
And is the scholarships information also released today?
Those that are up for Presidential Scholarships have to eventually go through an interview process before it s awarded. Jan 17th is the date that semifinalists are notified. Feb 17 is when the finalists are notified. Then in March, the PS are selected. Weekend of 3/6 is the final interview and selection. For more info go to http://www.psp.gatech.edu/
