Official Harvard 2011 Transfer Thread

My app status, as of this exact moment:

App-received
Harvard supplement- received
Payment-received
SAT scores- received
College transcript- received (yesterday- FINALLY!!)

rec letters, college official’s report, h.s. transcripts- NOT received. STILL. Grrrrrrrrr
I think I’m going to make a call…

@thabxborough- I’m about to make a call regarding midterms- I’ll post what I find out.

@BostonCrmPie-
That really sucks. My scores were all great, except for math- this was because I left one math section almost entirely blank!! That was the point during the test that my illness caught up with me to the point that I couldn’t ignore it- I just sat there, turning green I’m sure, freaking out and totally unsure as to what on earth I should do. I was afraid if I bolted out of the room to puke I would get disqualified, and I HAD to have SAT scores to report in order to apply to several of my potential transfer schools (and that was the last testing day available), so I didn’t want to risk that. So I was scanning the room, looking for a trash can, but didn’t see one…so I was just sitting there, rocking back and forth, with my face in my hands, trying to use mind over matter to convince myself not to get ill, and with the plan that if I did, I would just run to the corner of the room, puke, and go back to my seat- I never left the room, you CAN’T disqualify me! Lol it was HORRIBLE. At the break I raced to the bathroom and was fine for the rest of the test, thank god, but that one math section screwed me. I kept praying that it would end up being the “experimental” section and wouldn’t affect me, but no such luck lol.
So what DID happen with your score?? You had one of the top PSAT scores IN THE NATION??? Holy cow! What happened? Lol I’m not helping, am I? If I were you I’d try to figure out what went wrong- were you distracted that day, was something going on in your personal life, etc., and be prepared to explain to any interviewer you talk to, WHILE sharing your fabulous PSAT scores. Or maybe it’s better to just let sleeping dogs lie, I don’t really know in this case. Maybe the College Board messed up when they scored it…? That’s happened before…
Either way, my fingers are crossed for you. I’m sure you have plenty of other things working for you, anyway, and as I understand it SAT’s don’t have as much impact for transfers.

On a side note, if any of us actually get accepted to Harvard, I fully expect you/us/whatever to automatically become the best of friends…I don’t know about you guys, but I won’t know a soul there otherwise… ;)

Crap sandwich, I keep forgetting about the time zone difference, duh. Can’t call about midterms till tomorrow…I will let everyone know what I find out then, though.

I applied as well, can’t help but feel as if I wasted money but on some level the hope is worth it I suppose. Anyone have an idea of how many transfers Harvard actually accepts nowadays?

@smarts1 Oh dear! So I’m assuming you also used a paper application?

@chasethecarrot Can you also share what they say about your missing letters and transcripts?

About the SAT, I just…don’t have any good excuse. I didn’t prepare, which was awfully stupid of me. Then again, I had no prep for the PSAT either. (I had no idea I was eligible for the National Merit Scholarship until I received the commended letter.) I did slightly better on one of my SAT II subjects and horrid on the other, but Harvard isn’t seeing these scores.

My PSAT percentile was something like 97%, so I wasn’t at the tippity top, but I scored more than 100 projected points higher than my SAT score. Unfortunately, I don’t believe any school I have features an interview.

I haven’t seen any indication that the 10-20 range will change drastically.

I was planning on applying to NYU. If its not too personal, can I ask why you’re attempting to transfer?

@BostonCrmPie- Well, on the bright side, the lack of interview thing might be more of a blessing than a curse. I know it would be for me…I look pretty good (adult life me, that is) on paper, but honestly, once I have to talk to one of these people I’m pretty sure I’ll forget English as we know it, in its entirety…sigh
lol
And yes, I will definitely post whatever I find out after I call Harvard tomorrow, midterms, missing app materials, etc. I’ll let you guys know…

That really is crazy, though. I’m assuming you at least put the National Merit Scholarship under awards on your Common App, though, right? So they’ll have that info at least, and that’s an awesome plus for your app! If the rest of your stats look great it’s pretty easy to just assume you had a single off day. Plus the fact that it’s just a standardized test, seriously- I know I mentioned this jokingly in an earlier post, but I really do believe it- I don’t think being able to answer 25 questions or write a lengthy essay in 25 minutes is at all an accurate measure of someone’s intelligence or potential! Surely some college officials agree…

Here’s a question, though- I keep reading things about factoring SAT scores into GPA’s- do adcoms take our SAT scores and our GPA’s and use some system to add and average them and determine an overall score? Anyone know about that?

Hi,
I am transferring too and we seem to be missing the same stuff!

@chasethecarrot I sure hope they don’t factor SATs in a lot. I’d like to think that my GPA over years of college matters more than a couple hours in a testing room.

Everyone- I have been really busy so didn’t get a chance to call on Friday after all, but will first thing on Monday, and I will post whatever I find out then, of course.

@Boston I would really think so.

@MissUnderstood I just accidentally ran into a Stanford transfer thread that was started in March of last year- did I see your name there? Or is my memory failing me…
Just curious. I literally JUST saw that thread, totally randomly, so I thought it was funny that I just saw you pop up on here, too. :)

Hey, what’s up. I’m new to this thread, but applied to Harvard as a transfer too. I don’t really have any hope, but it’s fun to dream.
The 3,192 views this thread has gotten kinda makes me sad. lol, idk if they count the same users twice (hopefully…?) but yeah… Ha, last year only 600 something people applied. No such luck this year.

Hey. Didn’t get my confirmation e-mail yet, wondering if anyone else has had that problem, e-mailed them week before last, they said they got my stuff and that I would get the confirmation e-mail, but didn’t as of yet, contacted them again sunday, hoping to hear back today.

@Maybe later. I’m checking from my work computer, I think that counts as a distinct visit. I’d guess it is about half of that, so maybe a thousand.

BTW I heard that a few years back the big H, canceled transfer admissions, in the middle of applicants, might have been last year or the year before. Anyways, hope they don’t do that on us.

Wow, I didn’t know they stopped taking transfers in the middle of the app process! That’s crazy! I knew Harvard didn’t take transfer applicants for awhile, but to initiate that policy after students have already applied seems crazy…if that’s what really happened, I’d be interested to find out the circumstances surrounding the decision…

Okay, called Harvard today and they said we should send in midterm reports as soon as we can, so if you guys haven’t done so it looks like you should! Then again, I may have been given incorrect information- the person I talked to seemed unsure, and I know some of you have said they’re optional for transfers.

As for app materials missing, I was told they’re just really backed up, so no cause for concern.

:)

Yiiikes, and many probably don’t even check cc.
Well, I guess the dramatic rise in numbers is to be expected; last year they didn’t officially announce the resumption of their transfer program until January…
:/

Mid-Term reports technically are optional…buuut…so is their admitting you. :P

It seems cruel to make us go around to all of our professors, tell them we want to leave their school, and then ask them to regurgitate a grade on the sheet you are holding expectantly out to them. Someone should definitely set up a better system for doing this. lol

Midterm report isn’t among these requirements. I was planning on just not doing it…

I guess I’ll ask about this when I check my application status. (Weird website issue.)

@BostonCrmPie
Sorry it took me so long to reply to your earlier question about why I was trying to transfer, my internet has been acting weird. Anyways, I’m transferring mainly because I can’t stand the non-campus environment here at NYU; I just don’t feel any sense of community among the student body. I guess I’m just not ready for New York. Plus NYU’s financial aid is, well, not great.
Also you make a great point about the midterm report, I also wasn’t planning on doing that. Can anyone confirm if it is essential or if you should only do it if you think it’ll help your cause?

Lol I called them and STILL can’t confirm it!! Has anyone else had problems with being given completely false information from receptionists at the universities you’re applying to??? I almost gave up on one of them- was told I couldn’t apply because I didn’t have SAT subject tests- just to find out that the receptionist was wrong and I was fine! !!! Can you freakin believe this??? This is our whole future people, DO YOU THINK MAYBE YOU COULD MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT THE H*LL YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT BEFORE YOU TELL HOPEFUL STUDENTS WHAT’S UP???

Grr.

Again, the Harvard chick I talked to said transfers needed to send in midterms, and if I hadn’t done so I needed to immediately. But that website says nothing about midterms for us. This is ridiculous.

One more time, just for good measure- GRR.

;)

I just got my midterm report filled out and I have 4 A’s and 1 A-! Its nice to finally have some good news. This transfer process has been so stressful. But quick question, does anyone know if it is okay that we FAX our midterm reports? I only have one copy (I am applying to 6 schools and thought it was a little ridiculous to have 6 separate midterm reports for each teacher to fill). Thanks! And be patient if Harvard hasn’t confirmed your stuff yet! Its probably there and just hasn’t been processed yet.

You could just make copies and mail them individually.
