Is a hook being jewish or being from Long Island because i have both of those. And thats what my essay is about. Im def in.

Being jewish is not a hook, since Harvard no longer considers religion in admissions. They used to consider it when jews were totally kicking ass and getting in over everybody. People got ****ed, and they stopped doing that. I believe Byerly posted up a thread on that a while back.

Isn't being Jewish also considered an ethnicity?

No, it is not.

I believe she was being caustic...

Actually MANY classify themselves as "Ethnic Jews."

So, in a way, yes.

You could use it as an ethnicity. It's about as dangerous as marking "Asian," though.

I'm gay, poor, go to a crappy school, and got thrown out of the house freshmen year. I think those are hooks. Though, I'm not centering my app around them... that's just retarded.

"I'm not really sure that it is a hook. At my school at least 50 kids run it each year."

SewCurious are you Serious?? (lol) seriously though, 50 kids? where do you live? what marathon is that? how old were they? there were only 20 16 year olds, but im guessing there were plenty of 17 year olds at chicago. uh oh, i was gonna write an essay about that, but i guess its not a big deal. anyone else have an opinon?

I don't think being a gay is a hook. I'm sure there are plenty of gays in Harvard/Cambridge. It's not exactly the Bible belt...

Why'd you get thrown out of the house?

hey eyezon...

Quick Question: Why do you want to go to Harvard again...??

hahaha...jk.....

I live in los angeles. My school has 808 students

correction: we have 808 seniors, just under 5,000 students

there's a lot of high school students that run long marathons over here in SoCal--some even end up winning or placing in the top 3 (and I'd be willing to bet they'll write their essay on it.) Unless, you can write an exceptional essay (maybe even witty/ humorous) about participating but not winning...eh I dunno. I just know that participating isn't really a hook; I'm just trying to be honest.

"Quick Question: Why do you want to go to Harvard again...??"

lol, I was about to say...

Just testing you.......^^^^

"there's a lot of high school students that run long marathons over here in SoCal--some even end up winning or placing in the top 3"

those marathons cant be very big, most winners come from kenya and run it in 2 hrs 5 min (seriously, no stereotyping here, the top 10 runners at chicago were all kenyan) they run 4 minute miles for 26 miles straight, there is no possible way for an average 18 year old to run that fast for that long (well there is, but its not likely)

but yeah, i guess running isnt that big a deal. oh well, im depressed, but ill snap out of it.

"Is a hook being jewish or being from Long Island because i have both of those. And thats what my essay is about. Im def in."

Long Island is not under-represented, so no. It's not like you're deprived of opportunities and connection with the rest of the world like people in places like South Dakota and Wyoming. And, according to everyone else, being Jewish isn't, either.

Being Jewish should be though, as long as AA is around.

why in the world would being Jewish be a hook?
