I too wish they’d release some stats. I mean, we’ve got Princeton and Stanford… it’s only a matter of time. Although I believe that the NY Times reported that Harvard was supposed to release their numbers this week /:

But…think of it this way: more people may have applied to Harvard, but part of the reason has to be the fact that no supplementary materials are required. Easiest app. So maybe some people weren’t as serious about their application/decision? ;)

I didn’t say it was the sole reason. I know several people who submitted their apps just because the common app was done and it was a why-not kinda thing, since the odds of acceptance are close to none anyways. But yes, I definitely agree that the supplementary essay is a must.

I will admit I am one of those talked about ib the posts above. I just copied and pasted my essay from another app. Honestly I doubt I would have applied if it wasn’t on the common app.

Not trying to be rude, but the posts above are accurate =P

I didn’t submit a supplementary essay. My personal statement exceeds the word limit to the point that the admission officer who reads it might think it’s aq personal essay and a supp…combined.

I guess this, and no contact for interview until now, will diminish my already tiny chance. :/

smarter- Don’t get down on yourself. This whole process- and the process within the context of this year, with so many unknowns playing into the results of the SCEA round- is unpredictable, and there doesn’t seem to be any constant factor that hails success or failure. Even if you don’t interview, you’ll be reviewed, and I’m guessing you’ve got enough going for you in the first place that you figured this was worth a shot. That makes you a great candidate; at Harvard or anywhere else :)

I decided to check my common app account and noticed that it still says “complete” or “assigned” next to every part of my application, except the actual common app, which says “downloaded.” Even the supplement only says “submitted.” Should I be worried that they haven’t bothered to download the other parts of the app?

this wait is soo nerve wracking!!! And people are already beginning to try to convince me not to get my hopes up too high because my app was too typically asian for me to stand out at all. gahhhh.

collegeinfo1994: Have you checked your app status at H website? Does your status say ‘everything has been received’? I think that’s what matters most…

^yes, it does. I’m just worried that something was so bad on my common app that I was put in the automatic rejection pile, so they never bothered to print everything else out. Maybe I’m overthinking this…

@collegeinfo1994: don’t worry. mine says complete and submitted for the supplement, too. Also, my school forms section still says in progress, but when I called Harvard, they said they received everything. They even told me that they received my additional recs, art/music supplements, and all that jazz.

Does Harvard confirm that they’ve received the supplementary material? When I called(a few weeks ago), they said that the pile of incoming mailed material was so large that there’s no way they could tell me. So now they can?

You need to ask whether they received the Harvard Supplement, not “supplementary material”–the latter implies extra letters, CDs, etc., which they won’t check the status of.

^That’s what I’m talking about, though. The Harvard supplement is sent along with the common app, so I know they’ve already received that. I also sent an abstract and asked my mentor to send a supplementary recommendation letter, so that’s what I’m interested in asking about. Sounds like Rarissimavis got an answer :)

collegeinfo: 2 things: 1) Harvard is into accepting students based on things that can only be found through the supplement, activities sheet, teacher recs and extra essays or supp materials…so they def will not have disregarded you after simply going through the basics. if your page status with harvard says that they have received everything than you are probably good to go
2) I had one extra letter sent there and I simply emailed the admissions office asking it if had been received and they sent me a conformation email a few days later. so maybe email is the way to go?
