Official Harvard SCEA 2016 Applicants' Discussion Thread

@ Jaysha, oops, I just saw your post. Right there with ya about the score (bad ACT score, though, not subject test score).

@Kamenshik, the “suggested” deadline is not absolute, as you have probably noticed. They just ask for apps by then because they need time to sort out 30,000+ files (one for each applicant). The majority of apps flood in on January 1st, so they’d like to have extra time to fix the folders…ergo the Dec. 15th deadline.

Visual art/journalism/polysy

hahaha otl

I didn’t apply to Harvard SCEA, but I did Columbia ED and our board is nowhere near as active as yours so if I’m welcome here, I’d love to talk to all of you and stress out and commiserate together! :'P

International Relations/Engineering/Foreign Languages and Linguistics here. I fit the “undecided” mold quite well.

Biological science.

Is my-career-goal-is-military-service a plus for asians?

And it REALLY is by the way. I’m in cadets and military marching band.

This is interesting. I expected the overwhelming majority to be science gurus.

Hi rchhay  Arts/humanities.

Rejected/deferred: drink Coke and cry a little.
Accepted: Tell my family and friends!

I said economics, english language/literature, and political science. For my career choice I said journalist/writer. I am actually glad to see more social science/humanities–though, this could mean more competition between us!

I wonder what the decision e-mail’s subject line will say…like will it give a hint whether or not one is accepted/rejected/deferred. In other forums, I saw the acceptance and rejection e-mails…I hope I will be seeing the former!

In earlier posts I saw others posting their plans for the BIG DAY. My school has a 1/2 day on December 15th, but I will probably be volunteering in the afternoon. Hopefully after that I will get to go shopping to take my mind off of things!

Econ
@colllegeinfo, I think that there would be more social science people than the math/sci considering the social sciences are the most common department for Harvard students.

On Dec.15th, my band is holding a concert. I hope the decision will not affect my mood and my performance.

^ agreed. But Harvard is also *the * Ivy League known for mathematical and biological sciences (and especially for pre-med). Yale is known for Humanities and Princeton is for engineering…(yes, that’s math, but not as well-known as Math 55 at Harvard) and most of the other sciences at Princeton are “certificate” programs :(

power4good: Good luck at your concert!

I put down poli sci as well. But I think I had Econ as my second, and either Intl Relations or Literature as my third. But now I kind of want to major in History and Literature. I wish I could tell them that, not that it really matters.

and rchhay: we are open to all panicked applicants. Harvard has never been known to be exclusive or anything like that. JK. your completely welcome.

@ Jaysha: Did you see the question I asked you a couple of pages back? I know I’m most likely stressing out too much over it, but any answer would be good right now…

I put physical science, but that’s mostly likely to change to something in the humanities.

collegeinfo: No, I’m not Persian, but it’s really cool that you are! It’s actually Latin meaning “rarest bird,” essentially meaning “unique.” The original saying is just “rara avis” but someone else already has that user name.
Anyway, back to college stuff: how does Harvard know about our income? I don’t remember putting anything about it.

Was there a place where we could indicate our second field of interest? I just looked at the Harvard supplement and I only saw one spot dedicated to it.

^Common app allowed you to put down three

Oh sorry! I just went back and looked. Let me check my page and I will get back to you in a couple of minutes! no worries. (Ps my guidance counselor says that every year they have kids who call top schools because their status pages have “In progress” or “Unofficial” all over the place and the school just says that it is slow processing due to information overload. She says not to worry about it. But I will check nonetheless. )

In the meantime: I was perusing some coping with rejection articles online (hey, don’t mock me (actually…feel free. that’s pathetic. lol)) and I came across this article:

[The College Rejection Bonanza: Ivy League Schools are Over-rated Compared to Less Selective Colleges](<a href=“404 Not Found”>The College Rejection Bonanza: Ivy League Schools are Over-rated Compared to Less Selective Colleges)

there are a bunch like it. it’s depressing and slightly uplifting at the same time. It won’t cushion the blow for me, but maybe it will help the bruises heal a bit quicker?
Plus my “anti-Ivy League” family has been sending me tons of articles about the legacy and pipeline prep school babies that do not show our dream school in a very positive light. I’ll share those in complete bitterness upon rejection. :)

^ same… i put biology though.

@RirissimaAvis, that’s actually really close to how you say “rare bird” in Spanish! ( “un ave raro” ) I like the creativity.

Also, you answered questions about your income on the common app (as far as I remember) and on the CSS profile that was due.
