Official Harvard SCEA 2016 Applicants' Discussion Thread

It says I have a 75% chance…if only. But then again, when he first introduced it, there were people who were getting 1-6%. I just really want to test it, though!

Glancing through the spreadsheet, it appears to err on overemphasizing the number of leadership positions and the number of EC activities. The basic promise seems to reward the roundness :-). In reality, excellence in a particular area carries far more weight these days.

Does anyone know silverturtle’s percentage?

Does it matter? Just apply. He isn’t a Harvard admissions officer and just looking at the spreadsheet it cannot factor in essays, recommendations, types of ECs and a slew of other factors that really determine admissions. If you have a 2.2k+ SAT/SAT IIs and a 4.0 + some ECs do you really think your chance is 75%? I don’t think mine is.

haha 65% chance here… yahhh right

more like 95%

I’m not even gonna try that calculator…I’m afraid it’ll crush all my hopes…anyway, I am going to submit soon but probably not before 10/15.

I never knew that low income was a hook. I thought Harvard was need blind?

I never said it was accurate…just that I wanted to test it. It’s okay, just forget I said that :)

I couldn’t help my curiosity and I tried it…I got Reject… my GPA brings me down by a lot but I’m pushing my unusual ECs anyway  also, according to the chart, being a male is better than being a female, which I’m pretty sure is not true.

Yeah, it actually is an advantage(only slightly), unless you’re talking about applying to a school for engineering.

Any advice on cutting down a 700-word essay to meet the 500-word Common App requirement? I’ve taken out superfluous words, tangents, and “flowery” language so that my essay is basically just content. If I did end up over the word count, how far over 500 words would the Common App cut it off?

Thanks for any help you can give!

You should be able to preview and see exactly what the colleges would see. Right? BTW, My S wrote both his essays in 800-1000 words (within one single spaced regular page), and he got into every school he applied to. So, don’t worry as long as the essay itself is interesting and well-written.

@Whisperingmoon My essay is 822 words and I’m keeping it as is. I just uploaded it to the CommApp to check if they cut off anything, and they did not. What I would recommend is that if you can contain it to two pages double spaced (yes, you can slightly play with the margins), then it is fine.

Is anyone waiting until October 20th to send in their Comm App with more recent SAT scores? If not, then are you sending the scores seperately?

Also, did anyone send anything under “additional information” or send a third supplemental essay?

Just submitted my application!!

When can I expect to receive the access code?

@MDandFACS I’m waiting until the 20th, but I don’t think that makes any difference. I’m sending in my list of awards for additional info because I could only fit one into the “activities” description.

JulianCal: It will take 2-3 days for you to get acknowledgment from harvard admission office with a link to the page where you can retrieve your access code.

Thanks Alea!

Do you guys think it will make any difference for admission if I submit early (10/15) or near to the deadline (11/1), because at the moment I really have a lot to do in terms of editing essay, sorting out forms etc. but I do want to apply early. So should I worry if I’m aiming to submit around the 28th or 29th?

I don’t think it will make any difference for your chances of admission. Maybe it can affect the possibility of an interview if they interview SCEA applicants, which I am not sure about; maybe someone could comment on this point?

@Rarissima Thank you. The date that we send in our applications for SCEA should not deter our admission process (as long as it’s not in December…)
