Official Harvard SCEA 2016 Applicants' Discussion Thread

Are you sure it does not, cause I probably finish by the 20th too.

@zergftw why would it affect your chances? If you’re right for Harvard, you’ll get in no matter when you submit your application. Even if you submit it on 11/1, you are still showing your dedication to Harvard by applying early.

I second Rarissima’s opinion. If you’re right for Harvard, it really doesn’t matter when you submit it as long as its sent by the deadline. I don’t even think they start reading it till the 1st of November so it really gives you no advantage by sending it early. Better to polish your essays or something than submit it just for the sake of swiftness.

They allow you to send Nov SAT scores, which come back at (around) the end of November, right? So how does that work if they begin the evaluation process at the beginning of the month?

Hmm, that’s a good question. But they simply might not evaluate the applicants with the november SAT scores until they’ve gotten them. But still, if they do that, it doesn’t seem quite right. Can anyone provide further detail rather than mere hearsay?

November scores are OK for EA. See this timeline: [Harvard College Admissions § Applying: Application Timeline](http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/apply/application_process/timeline.html)

I’m sure the admissions office get notified on the update. Also, if I get deferred, I can keep sending in updates, right?

@NoCensure They do begin reading the applications in October, but that really has no relevance when compared to the amount of applications that they have to go through.

Will they start reading my application even if I don’t provide any SAT/ACT scores?(except subject tests)

do people think sending the application in tomorrow (10/15) follows the “by October 15th?” Please let me know!

Does anyone know if I can just send in my supplement on the common app site, like without submitting the actual common app yet? Because I would like to give them something to start my file, then in a day or two they can get the rest.

Also, can I submit without my recommenders having submitted? They have all been assigned to each school but have not yet filled out the forms, so can I go ahead and submit now and then whenever the finish the site will send the recs along later?

any help would be appreciated. thanks :)

@ Jaysha: Yes, you can just submit the supplement right now, and then send in the Common App and recommendation forms later. That’s what I did yesterday.

Thanks calgirl! Okay potentially silly question here: do we need to title our essays? or do you think it matters? I personally despise titles, but I am not sure what would be appropriate in this situation.

I don’t think essays need a title.

I didn’t title my essays either.

@locklock: I do not think you should worry about this date. as someone already mentioned , it is for them to distribute the work smoothly, but the deadline is 11/1.

Does anyone know for sure if they begin the evaluation process before Nov. 1st?

Even if they did, the fact is that they have set a deadline for the submission of applications. I do not see how they could give, even indirectly, an advantage to early applicants. They’d better move the deadline earlier if they required more time.
I trust that the process is fair and that they go by their own rules, i.e consider all applicants from the same perspective as long as they submit by the deadline

Actually, they start evaluating in “Early October” and while one’s common sense may tell them there is no advantage of submitting well before the deadline, there may in fact be one. Last minute applications simply do not look good, in my opinion. Getting things in promptly and as soon as possible is best. With that having been said, a better application will always outweigh any benefits to being the early bird, so do not submit if it is not as good as you think it can be in X amount of days.

Thanks, MDandFACS and Hparent. It’s down to about 670 words now (one page single spaced) and is not cut off by the common app  Do you suggest keeping it single spaced or changing it to double?

And Hparent, if you don’t mind me asking, did your son get into Harvard?

I really hope that the 10/15 “suggested deadline” doesn’t have too much of a bearing on application decisions. I’m almost done but still working on a list of activities for the Additional Information section and want to proof my essay some more.
