Official Harvard SCEA 2016 Applicants' Discussion Thread

@Alex, yes I’m a varsity lightweight rower :D. I started crew as a heavyweight but lost 15 pounds since then…figures. I could become a men’s coxswain if I wanted to. Are you also part of a team now?

@theagentofchaos, couldn’t agree more.

What time (5 pm EST, 9 PM EST, etc) are decisions mailed out?

Do some students receive notification before December 15 OR is December 15 when notifications start coming out?

Do they email you the results?
Thanks!

I am! I’m a rower but I’m a little too short to row competitively on the college level, even as a lightweight. So I’m considering coxing haha.

@bonnie,

 1. 5 pm EST on December 15
 2. only if you’re a likely/recruit you receive notification before the 15th
 3. yes

@Alex, I’m not that tall either…but hopefully my erg scores will compensate :)

Track and field! I’d made contact in the past, but the recruiting form on the H Athletics website was glitching when I tried to send info in; the page wouldn’t submit. I’ll be giving the coach a call tomorrow.

Is it possible that decisions will come out before the 15th? I remember seeing that somewhere…

I think it might be too late to try to contact the coach now, if you’re doing scea.
recruiting season is long over.
I met with the coach in early august but i’m pretty sure that i’m not good enough to be recruited, but definitely plan to be a walk-on if i get in!

I don’t expect track to be a tipping point; if anything, the only hook I can even marginally claim is a full scholarship/NROTC participation. Speaking of which- anyone on here interested in NROTC? :D

I saw on the Stanford thread that they’re collecting statistics on the SCEA Applicants. We should do the same…

What kind of stats?

Sent from my LG-P509 using CC App

So question. I applied scea, and I just got contacted for an interview. It’s scheduled for later this week…but this seems wayyy too late to make a difference in my app. Any thoughts?

@willy, i havent even been asked yet. apparently harvard said the deadline was dec 10th for interviews… O_O which makes no sense. Also, it wont hurt you to give your all. what i would do to get an interview right now. i feel my interview would redeem me from my subpar application. because there’s stuff that even that even 3 essays cant even cover that happened.

@Alex
I plan to play volleyball at Harvard, although the coach won’t be helping me through admissions

Hmm… am I the only unathletic one on CC?

@smartandsmarter i am not in sports at school, if that makes you feel better. though i have a passion for volleyball and basketball outside of school. i was busy doing academic and extracurricular stuff every time there were tryouts.

@smartandsmarter, Nope. I’m pretty much in the same boat as you :confused: in fact my interviewer asked me if I was an athlete three times…it’s like he didn’t believe me when I said no. I tend to limit my athletic prowess to the backyard :D

does it help if you plan to play a sport at the school even though you’re not a recruit? When my interviewer and I were talking about it he wrote it down to put in his report and made it sound like it would

I play sports. The problem is that I play a LOT of sports… pretty much everything you can think of and only good at a few of them. I do them mostly because they are fun and everyone needs a healthy life style. Will Harvard view doing a lot of sports and not being great at anyone of them a down?

@power i highly doubt it, it would probably just make you look more well rounded. In the least, it definitely cant hurt you

What about if you’re involved in many clubs (say 6 or 7) but hold high offices ( v.p. or pres) in them and have been productive and dedicated to the club? Could this be misconstrued as trying to be involved in everything and being too diversified?
