Official Harvard SCEA 2016 Applicants' Discussion Thread

Yes, he’s a senior now. He was also accepted into Y (SCEA) and P.

It shall make no difference if you apply online wheather you use single space or double space, as long as it’s kept intact.

Good luck!

BTW, only the official deadline really matters. My S submitted his applications within half hour of the official deadline for both SCEA and RD, although I hoped he did earlier.

Question about the supplemental essay:

Do you guys think it would make a difference if you send one or not? I plan on sending a research abstract/paper(no preference, right?), and I wrote my supp. essay today…but I’m not really loving it. Should I edit it some more and send it or do you guys think the research supplement is enough?

Thanks Hp! I assume he applied RD to Harvard, then. I hope he loves it there!!

So on the supplement, it asks you to indicate a field of study. If I were to get in, I would hope to pursue a dual concentration in English and Psychology. Would it be best to select A) Social Sciences or B) Humanities for my field of study? I’m sure this has little impact on admission decisions, but which would appear more unique/set me apart from others?

You should only send the supplemental essay if there’s something you REALLY want the admissions office to know. Otherwise, in Harvard’s own words, if something doesn’t naturally come to mind, you should skip it.

Okay so here’s my problem:
My common app talks about something I’ve overcome and how that changed my personality and how I’ve created ECs that revolve around my experience.

I plan on majoring in the sciences, so I felt it would be appropriate to include another essay to talk about that. The topic came naturally; the words…not so much. That’s my only concern.

Thanks for the reply, though!

soooo what are all your other schools, considering the majority of us will be depressed come december 15th?

whisperingmoon24 - Neither looks “unique”, and colleges all know that even among those who say they are “very sure” about their choice of major, more than half will change mind and more than 1/3 may change mind more than once during their college years. BTW, here is the H Admission Statistics FYI, as posted on the official website:

Intended Field of Concentration of Class 2015
Humanities 19.2%
Social Sciences 24.8%
Bio Sciences 23.4%
Physical Sciences 9.5%
Engineering 12.4%
Computer Science 1.9%
Math 7.6%
Undecided 1.1%

collegeinfo1994 - As others mentioned before, there were people who wrote the supplemental essay but did not get in and others who didn’t do it but got in. You should send in an extra essay if you truly feel it will provide info that you’d really like the college to know but was not adequately described in other parts of your app. It’s expected to be well written. Just remember, it’s your app so it’s your call. Nobody knows you better than yourself. Your judgement, though, will be a part of your app to be evaluated as well…

Thanks for the reply, Hparent  I’ll work on my essay as much as possible and maybe I’ll send it in if I’m happy with the final product.

I haven’t read this thread but want to offer a small piece of advice as another Harvard parent. If Harvard is one of your top choices and you plan to apply SCEA, try to schedule at least one other interview before your Harvard interview. That will allow to go in with a better sense of how the interview might go and perhaps you will be a little more relaxed. Good luck!

@1moremom don’t colleges set up the date for the applicants?

@RarissimaAvis,

Harvard, and most of its peer institutions outsource the interviewing to its alumni. You can’t control when an alumnus/a will contact you, but if you happen to have a choice (e.g. 2 or more contact you within a short period of time), I suppose you can try to schedule another school before Harvard. The date for interviews is usually determined by mutual agreement between the alum and the interviewee.

Furthermore, if you’re applying SCEA to Harvard, you will likely not be applying to another school which offers alum interviews, so perhaps 1moremom’s suggestion is a moot point. Does any school that offers rolling admissions also offer personal interviews with alum?

RarissimaAvis, Some do, but you can often request a time, take advantage of other colleges that are conducting interviews at your school, or interview during a college visit. (A friend’s son had three interviews last week during New England college tour.)

Thanks for the useful info!

Also, anyone know if I have to wait until teacher/counselor recs are on Common App to submit my application or if I can submit before they’re online?

You can submit before they’re online.

i have quite a few ECs/special programs that I wasn’t able to include in the common app, so I was planning on attaching a resume in the additional info section. can anyone shed some light on how these resumes should be formatted? I have mine in a table, with name of activity/years/positions and a description. Is it true that resumes should be no more than a page (mine’s 2.5)? And how much “description” should be included (only positions?)?

Also, my school uses naviance, so my guidance counselor says that my recommendation teachers don’t need to fill out the supplemental teacher evaluation–does anybody know if these forms are still required?
Thanks!

Are International Students at a disadvantage if they apply for Early Action ?

people… we cannot let this forum die

Absolutely true mtrushmore we can’t. All right, so let me give a topic that’s been posted earlier. Where else are you guys applying?

Well, I suppose I have a question too! If I am going to take the November SAT Subject Tests for EA, can I view my scores before I send them in or do I have to have them sent directly?
