Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

Do you guys know how long it takes to schedule an interview? I’m probably going to submit my application really close to the 11/1 deadline, just because I’m a procrastinator lol. If my interview takes a long time to schedule, is there a possibility it won’t even factor into my admissions decision, since Harvard only has ~1.5 months to make decisions? I’m visiting Harvard later this month, should I schedule an on-campus interview then?

@pmmywest - If you’re in the US, Harvard interviews normally take place after you submit your application - then you will (most likely) be contacted by an alumni interviewer. It appears there are also limited opportunities for on-campus interviews. See here:

Hi I’m thinking about applying early to Harvard and I am going to ask my teachers for recommendations tomorrow (I know it’s late).

Is it bad if I ask one math teacher and one science teacher? I feel they know me best.
But I heard it’s bad to ask two teachers from the same subject (math and science are in the same category)
Plus the Harvard website says to pick two teachers from “different academic subjects”. Do math and science count as two different subjects?

Oh and also the math teacher is from 10th grade but I knew her since 8th grade and she is the adviser of 2 clubs which I am still in. Plus it’s helpful that she went to Harvard.
I hope that makes up for the fact she taught me 2 years ago

Thanks!

A math teacher and a science teacher is a perfect combination. yo math and science are not the same thing. If you keep in touch with the teacher after 10th grade, that’s good, because s/he knows how you grow.
You had a harvard alum to teach you math! lucky.

For the supplement essay, it says 500KB. That is a lot, right? How long are your essays going to be?

Thank you for the response!
500 KB is actually very small.
1 MG is around 1000 KB but since a word doc is not usually a big file, you should be fine.

I think aiming for 500 words give or take is good. Im going to try and make it like the common app essay length

I’m doing a small common app essay (~500 words) and a big supplement essay (~1000 words).

And yeah 500 KB is pretty big-- you can throw in a picture or two, haha.

How far are you guys in your essays?

Haven’t started… lol… cries

I’m done; I’m just taking a few days before I re-read and see if it needs editing.

Also haven’t started, just because I’m working primarily on Siemens/debate/a film that will eventually end up being a supplement. I do, however, have bits and pieces that I thought up written down in multiple stickie note applications across my computer. I’m going to be spending the next two weeks synthesizing these tidbits into full-fledged essays, though.

Gosh, it’s so hard balancing real life with applications.

Isn’t the word limit for common app essay 650?

@skieurope‌

This is an odd question-- but seeing as you’re only applying this year (and so are presumably 18, like most of us), how is it that you have over 3000 posts on these boards and very extensive knowledge of application semantics?

@Bemusedfyz 17 actually. The boards have been a wealth of information which supplements the very strong college counseling office at my school which I am happy to pass along. If you look at some of my younger colleagues on the prep school/high school forums, you will find many with more posts.

@skieurope‌

Well, that makes sense. Thanks for all the good work, then!
Good luck!

@Bemusedfyz Thanks! You too!!

the question about elaborate one of your ECs, how much do you guys plan to write?

150 words, as the limit stipulates?

@Bemusedfyz, ok cool. Thanks.

I’m also done with my mine. I wrote all of my essays in summer, because I knew once school started I’d had absolutely no time. I still have a couple supplements to do for other schools, however.
