The official Hays Memorial Scholarship invite came today. I really would like for us parents to do dinner or something together while there. Best of luck to all who applied for the Hays!

Congrats to splash. If all goes well D will miss the Hays festivities for the regional tournament. Of course, we haven't made the regional tournament since before our point guard was born so....who knows.

I would hate it if we couldn't meet in person, but I do hope your team makes the tournament. I'll keep my fingers crossed for her. They must be having a pretty good season so far!

D's invite came today as did their 25th win this season (against just a couple losses). There seems to be some work associated with this one, huh?

D received Hayes invite on Friday. She won't be there on the official weekend due to State Academic Decathlon (team is ranked 4th in Texas), but hope all goes well when she does visit. Glad I'm not the one who has to compete in this!

Woo I read this thread and I was getting worried, but I got my invite yesterday. Phew. Any students on here going?

Got home last night from visiting my DD in Philadelphia...DS received the invite over the weekend. We'll be there SplashMom!

We'll be along for the ride with DD. Let's get together while there, Texasmom. DH was to make hotel reservations today, but honestly, I just don't know that I can stay in Conway again. We stayed at the Super8 when we were there last as that was supposedly one of the nicer, newer hotels there. The hallway stunk of someone who had B.O. and the beds were terribly uncomfortable. I was elated when the sun rose the next morning after what felt like the longest night of my life. We are considering a hotel in Little Rock.

The letter encouarges the participants to include parents, guardians and other family members duing this event, but do you think that means we should plan on dinner and the performance of Urinetown, the Musical, too? From what I've heard, the show is supposed to be quite good, but what about that name? Ick!

lol...I read the title of the play and just laughed...not sure it's one we would like to catch. I agree with you on the hotel accommadations. Let me know where you are staying and I'll discuss it with DH. I'm so busy with teaching that I can't think about it until the weekend.
S is working on something to present...haven't talked to him about it yet...probably some of his writing. What is your D going to do?

I have no idea what DD plans to do for the scholarship weekend. She's given me the impression that she has some ideas, but she hasn't asked my opinion, so I'm just waiting until she mentions more about it. I hate to say that she has a tendency to wait till the last minute to do some things. She is one who works well under pressure, but it makes me nervous.

I'll talk to DH and see if he came up with any good hotel plans. I do have to laugh every time I see the name of the musical. I would like to know the reason behind the name ... or maybe I wouldn't. :)

As a parent of a freshman at Hendrix and former Hays contestant, here is my info.

We have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express three times and have been happy with it. Fairly new, clean, and helpful and with breakfast. Also close to campus. At the Hays last year, they had reserved a block of seats at the play for parents (separate from the kids). They had more of a stand up "munchie" evening for parents instead of a dinner. There was a lunch with the kids the next day. My son had the last interview session of the day, so we were there all day, but if yours is early, you could be finished before lunch. I stayed pretty busy with info sessions and lunch that day but had time to explore the campus and town. There is a coffee shop close to the arts complex if you need a place to chill. Ask for directions at the admissions office since you can easily walk from there.

We arrived early so my son could sit in on another class and get a good feel for the campus. That combined with the overnight in the dorm was worth the visit. The kids got to know each other and experience some night life. I think their hosts were pretty good about getting them into bed at a decent hour since the next day was high stakes.

Are the requirements like last year? They were asked to read an article or short story (list provided) and prepare a discussion or prepare a presentation of their choice.

If anyone wants any more specific info, please PM me. And just have fun.

Thanks so much, preironic! That was great information. I may PM you later with some questions. Thanks again!

Please excuse the intrusion; I wandered over from the HWS board because you guys are actually posting. When I read that Hendrix is doing Urinetown, I was extremely impressed. Please don't let the name throw you; I've only heard the music, but based on that, it's a wickedly funny parody/comedy. It says a lot about Hendrix that they're doing such a recent Broadway show.

Feel free to join us anytime, mezzomom. I did do some reading about the musical and it sounds very good.

Does anyone have any idea just how many contestants there are for the Hayes? I know the criteria, but I'm just wondering how much of a cattle call this might be.

I've heard there are ~80 invited. Don't know that for sure, but I think that's the number that was mentioned.

So, if there are @80 kids coming to "compete" for a few Hays scholarships, what do the others have to hope for? In other words, are there other bump-ups that non-Hays winners get? Or if you don't get the Hayes , you can only get the scholarship you had before? Some schools with competition weekends tell you in advance (Hanover and Centre for two)-we will give 3 top awards of full-ride, plus 7 full-tuition, plus 10 3/4 tuition, so you at least know there are some possibilities other than the top award.

Re those who don't win the Hayes Scholarship:

I understand from my conversation with the ao that all who compete for the Hayes are winners by way of an increase in the scholarship already given. He didn't specify amounts, but he did say there were 4 full tuition scholarships given to the runners up for the Hayes.

Some of the fin aid packages are in the mail already.

That's wonderful news. Thank you for sharing, motherof4pearls. DD is very excited about the upcoming weekend. How exciting to hear about the possibility of more $$, even for those kids who aren't recipients of the Hays or the full-tuition scholarships. :)

I second that!
