Scholarships

Good news! DD just received a letter awarding her a total of $60,000 over four years at Hendrix ($48,000 academic scholarship and $12,000 Odyssey scholarship). Although that's wonderful news, we're keeping our fingers crossed for great things to happen at the Hays Memorial Scholarship weekend.

We are finally with you splashmom. D's mail came as we were leaving for family Christmas and she received the same great news. She also received the $12k Academic and received a $4K Odyssey. That will make it doable. Not easy, but doable. We now have a wonderful private school option for D to consider. She feels her years of work were recognized by Hendrix and I do, too. It's nice when that happens, isn't it? She couldn't be more pleased. We are a grateful family.

That's fantastic!!! Congrats!

S got a similar award to Splashmom's D. Maybe we will all meet in February! We should have a tailgate party while the kids do the testing, interviewing, and other hoops they need to jump through to get that Hays!

I'm so glad she finally got the letter, curmudgeon! Way to go! I hate to think of you having to make too many bumpy mile-long rides to the mailbox only to return disappointed :). That's awesome news!

Texasmom, I like the way you think! Hanging out with y'all while the kids are in the midst of interviews, etc. sounds like a great time to me. We should definitely plan it!

My S also got a similar award.
I don't think he will apply for Hays (one more thing to do), since we are in state, and he's applying for the Governor's Distinguished Scholarship. I noticed that the Odyssey scholarships can be added to other scholarships--so if I am correct, that would be $4000 (or whatever) a year for "research" in addition to full tuition, fees, room, and board for kids who get the Hays or Governor's Scholarships Also, I am curious which category your kids' Odyssey scholarships were for. . .and if you know how they decide on the category.

"I am also pleased to offer you the Hendrix College Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Professional and Leadership Development. "

I believe Odyssey research awards are different and are based on submission of a project idea. Not the same as spendable on anything, renewable cash for 3 more years like this is.

S received Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Artistic Creativity.

Quoting from a Hendrix brochure: "Odyssey Distinction Awards are designed to recognize accomplishments at the secondary school level and encourage students to pursue similar experiences at Hendrix. The awards are presented in six categories: Artistic Creativity, Global Awareness, Professional and Leadership Development, Service to the World, Undergraduate Research, and Special Projects." My S received a "Research" award (though I'm not really sure why--I think his accomplishments are more artistic, and that is what he wrote his essay about. . .maybe they figured he's a math and science geek, which he is, too).

DD's was "Odyssey Honors and Distinction Award for Professional and Leadership Development." While visiting Hendrix in September, DD was encouraged to submit some slides of pictures she had taken as they said she would not have to major in an art-related field to receive Odyssey awards for these. She takes beautiful pictures and we have been especially impressed by some pictures she took on a class trip to Europe last year. She hasn't yet done it, though, and I don't know if it's too late or not. She really needs to check on that.

Atomom, that's awesome that your son receives the Governor's Distinguished Scholarship! I did read about that for Arkansas residents ... very, very nice. You are right about scholarships, in that they stack at Hendrix, so your son should be able to use that $4k per year for additional programs, i.e. research, study abroad, etc. Of course, you would want to double check that with his admissions counselor as I don't want to speak out of turn and say something that may not be true.

Don't forget those FAFSA forms, folks! Get 'em in early ... it's an extra $1,000!

Darling daughter has just finished her Hays essay! Hair-pulling catter walling time, but it is done. And it is unique and only she could have written it. Trust me. Is it what they want? I don't care. It's what she wanted to tell them and I'm satisfied with that. LOL.

After daily nagging, pleading, and finally threatening, S finally finished his essay as well. It's good...he believes it follows the prompt but then we say he beats to a different drum so we'll see!

He put it in the mail box on Saturday. I'm so anal that I even emailed the admin rep to let him know it's on it's way and if he doesn't receive it by the 15th to call me! I guess I will be cutting the strings soon enough!

oh...did the FAFSA too..$1000 extra is worth the headache of having to go back and ammend it!

After seeing that your two kids have completed their essays, I just reminded my DD that she should be completing hers and getting it in the mail. She's farther on it than I thought, so maybe I should just stay out of it ... or not. DH and I need to finish the FAFSA. I'm feeling another wave of nausea.

SplashMom....
Nothing a bag of kisses won't solve!

I'm already there, Texasmom! I've got a glass of Coke and my Christmas stocking stash (including Kisses) on the desk beside me. There's nothing a little chocolate can't solve. ;)

Is there a "Hendrix for Mothers" forum anywhere?

Juuuuust kidding.
