@simonsays123 I was accepted to Berkeley as a regents candidate, guess Cal it is for me at this point, hopefully I don’t die in EECS

@tccbucks‌ I think the worst part is that for the past four years all I’ve been hearing is “study your ass off for SATs, get straight As with the hardest schedule, become super involved with ECs ur passionate about, then just be yourself on the app and colleges will love you!” and now I’ve just been rejected from my top 3 schools. So I guess it’s a good life lesson to learn that sometimes hard work just doesnt pay off. I just now regret being so uptight and unconditionally studious for four long, hard years and not taking more time to enjoy life outside of school.

@PerfunctoryPeter‌ I feel the same way. I mean I’ve only been rejected (or basically, calling this a rejection) from my top 2, but that’s what I did. I think the issue I have is that I don’t have a clear hook. I have no ethnic background and am not cultural or religious. It seems the same may have done you in, which sadly isn’t something either of us can control, but is a risk at such a small school. I think in the end my hard work wherever I am will pay off, I just realized this year that I don’t have to be as studious and I can still get the grades.

@PerfunctoryPeter, you nailed it. I did all of that (well, most) and haven’t gotten good results from my original top choices. Hopefully at least one of my remaining schools (other than Rice, don’t want to go) will appreciate my work, but they’re all extremely selective so I doubt it tbh. I’m just bitter because I could’ve slept more, lol.

@PerfunctoryPeter, @tccbucks, @hopefulperson – You should read this article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/15/opinion/sunday/frank-bruni-how-to-survive-the-college-admissions-madness.html?_r=0

The admissions process at schools like Harvey Mudd is beyond absurd, and it gets to a point where there’s nothing to differentiate successful and unsuccessful candidates. And the stuff regarding URM’s is simply obnoxious.

The work ethic that you’ve developed will serve you all incredibly well in the next four years and beyond. My own personal story is that I was rejected from all the Ivy’s and ended up at a second (or third tier) school. Five years later I was at Harvard Medical School. The only name that’s important on your resume is the last place you went to school or where you worked. Your educations and work life won’t end after your undergraduate educations. Make Harvey Mudd regret the fact that they didn’t take you.

Top school on my list + first straight rejection.

I believe I would likely have gotten an offer had I not applied for FA… as an international student from some darn competitive Asian country.

It felt okay though, because it reminds me that some four years ago I was rejected by some dream (high) school of mine (…which was also some ‘sciency’ school, by the way), and there was no FA issue then lol. But I had done fine in that OTHER school…am guessing if this is some sign for me to stay away from/stop being obsessed with sciency schools (wow)…

Ah, but it doesn’t feel ok that I’m going to miss the Claremont colleges… and, maybe, California. TuT
But if all else fails, well, at least I have a virtual presence in LA, no kidding.

@AsleepAtTheWheel‌ Thanks a lot for the info and advice ;).

Accepted since last Friday! Will post stats later

*What influenced you to apply? *- I wrote about visiting and how I saw a pickup skateboarding competition when
I was there, the Claremont Colleges, world-renowned engineering program, the core curriculum, watching quirky
HMC tours on Youtube, etc.
*How has your background influenced what you want to learn? * - wrote about my parents’ journey to America,
how I hope to change the world with my computer science degree, the service I do now, etc.
Teacher Rec #1: Got it from my chemistry teacher who I absolutely loved. Didn’t read it, but I’ll say an 8.
Teacher Rec #2: This one was from my English teacher freshman and junior year who I hit it off with. She told me herself that she wrote an awesome letter of rec so I’ll go with 10.
Counselor Rec: Don’t know her super well, but I saw her lots towards the end of junior year and the beginning of senior so she got to know me better than most. Let’s go with a 7.
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: n/a
Additional material (abstracts/papers/other): n/a

Weaknesses: ACT essay, no work experience, no interview or supplemental materials
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I believe they liked the way I presented myself and my goals. Additionally, I’m a URM female entering an engineering field so I think that helped a bit too.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Harvard, UChicago, UCLA, UC Davis, Cal Poly SLO, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Saint Mary’s College of California, Rice; waiting till tomorrow to open my decisions from Yale and Stanford.

General Comments & Advice: Be sure to bounce your essays off of people who aren’t your parents (e.g. siblings, mentors, counselors) but make sure that it still sounds like you. I’m certain my sister’s help with perfecting my essays was key, but some of her suggestions didn’t sound like something I would say so I didn’t use them. Like @legtimate said be honest! Good luck to all!
