absolutely agree. as an int’l students I feel the pain most excruciatingly. Dare not to ask for FA. ahhhhhhhh. But still WL by Midd. Gotta commit suicide. (crap…)

waitlisted

Waitlisted.

Waitlist…time to move on :(

Admit rate was 17.5% according to their website.

rejected! haha didn’t want to go anyway

Waitlisted, after getting early writes from both Bowdoin and Swarthmore. Maybe Middlebury is pulling a WUSTL or just being wary by waitlisting most applicants first. But then again, I did have to ask for FA.

This makes me wonder what’ll happen with Williams, my top choice.

well, got waitlisted…

Sorry if I sound noobish, but what does ‘pulling a wustl’ mean?

Accepted…but I think it was more to fill a quota rather than I am actually qualified…

Swarthmore is an amazing LAC too so you should be very happy regardless of the outcome

Someone explained it a few posts ago, but I’ll write it here: Basically, WUSTL knows it gets used as a safety school for other, more selective schools that are ranked higher. Sometimes they reject “overqualified” applicants who haven’t shown much interest, knowing that they would probably matriculate somewhere else and drive WUSTL’s yield down. This has also been called Tufts Syndrome, but BU, WUSTL, Tufts, and even Cornell have been accused of practicing this.

@ The Road: Thank you very much! I’m not bitter at all about getting waitlisted - I definitely like Bowdoin/Swarthmore much better than Middlebury so I won’t be keeping my name on the WL.

Oh thanks for explaining! Though I really doubt I’m overqualified…
Congrats on getting your other acceptances! :)

Btw, not wanting to get off-topic, but when did you get your acceptance by Bowdoin and was it through mail or e-mail?

Relying heavily on a wait list is also a way to enroll more “full pay” students, since I don’t think Midd is “need blind” as to students admitted off the wait list.

So you think we’ll have a better chance if we cancelled our app for financial aid?

^ I really couldn’t say how an adcom would view someone who applied for FA in RD but withdrew the FA app for the wait list. I’d hate to see this becoming a trend, though. If a family really has financial need, I think they should seek aid. Just my opinion, though.

I think I’m going to call the Midd office on Monday and ask. Well, financial aid is important to my family but not completely essential. My parents are willing to sacrifice themselves if they have to…

@ digital24688: I was accepted as an early write, so I heard back a few weeks ago on March 15th I believe. I got it in the mail - Bowdoin does not notify their applicants through online means whatsoever. Keep checking your mailbox (I think the rest of the RD notices were sent out two days ago), and good luck! As for withdrawing FA…DON’T do it! I’m sure money is tight for you, but it’s the same for everyone. There will always be another school giving you enough money that you’ll be happy with (Where else have you heard from?). Not only that, but by the time most schools get to their waitlists, the FA has dried up and you’re not likely to get much anyways. If you’ve already been waitlisted and you really want to go to Middlebury, keep your name on the list and sit tight. Call, email, visit, write a letter restating your interest in Middlebury (but NOT all four…they’ll think that’s overkill and will probably be turned off by it).

Ah, how lucky. It’s just that I’ve been hearing of internationals who received their Bowdoin decisions by e-mail yesterday and so I’m worried.
I think I’ll check the local carrier on Monday…wish me luck!
Middlebury is my only non-safety school which has replied (the others were dickinson and beloit, got my FA there and such) so I’m not sure about my options yet. Thanks for the encouragement though. I think I’ll do an appeal letter and call…haha thanks for the suggestions.
Funny thing is…this is exactly what that fortune teller told me…that I’d be waitlisted at Midd and accepted at Bowdoin…I hope the latter part is true!
