Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2013

I wrote (post #153) that our school announced on it’s website that 2 of the 22 previously announced made it to NMSF… So the info is out there in CA, surprised at the lack of postings here as well!

My D made NMSF in Florida with a 212! Update the stats!

any other OH updates out there? My dd is safe with 218 but a friend with 211 is biting nails. Only posts are for 212. Our school not releasing anything. GRRR.

Minimom, was she told what the cutoff was?

Did anyone get Nevada cutoff yet?
Congratulations to all
Hard work already paying off

10(?) Boarding school regions

These usually are set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states in the region.

Internationals=?
This usually is set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among all the individual states.

Commended (national cutoff)=200
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not a NMSF receives commended status. This group represents the highest 50,000 scorers.

Did anyone get a letter in the mail (besides homeschoolers) or is it always through the high school? I thought that we got something in the mail in prior years, was it after the public announcement in Sept.?

There is already someone from Maryland who apparently made it with a 219.

For x1234321x:

And regarding state cut-offs in general:

Seems like there have only been decreases in cut-off scores this year. That must be very frustrating for those who didn’t make it last year, but would have this year.

Congrats to everyone so far!!

:)

If post #152 is accurate about the TN cutoff score, then we’re happy, but that was the one and only TN reference we’ve seen on here. Has anyone from TN actually been notified? Our son has a 217 and his GC hasn’t heard anything yet.

It shouldn’t bother them one bit. Cutoffs drop because the exam was harder and thus in order to have 16,000 Semi-Finalists, the qualifications must be lower. If this year’s exam was harder than last year’s, it stands to reason that a person who scored X would probably score X-2 or X-3 and still not qualify.

We are in with a 216 in Texas, but Principal says we have to keep quiet until Sept 12th. Anyone know why?

Safe with a 222 in New York.

Does the number of finalists always drop from 16,000 to 15,000? And what keeps a student from becoming a finalist?

Calling DC and MA, has anyone heard scores that made it?

Once a state cut-off has been established on this thread there is little motivation to post other scores, CollegeDad86. These threads do sometimes post misinformation, but, given that the TN cut-off last year was 214, I think you can consider your son’s NMSF status a sure-bet.

That is the press embargo date stipulated by the NMSC. Schools are not to release information to the media until then. Some school administrations seem to consider this a directive to tell no one anything before then.

SMMboys, please see the FAQ pinned at the top of this forum. As far as I know, the drop is always according to the numbers you cite.

my son just got his notification today, semi-finalist. 212 in New Mexico

Collegedad: We’re in TN and haven’t heard from the GC yet. I don’t anticipate my D having an issue, but I’d sure like to hear from school. D1 was notified on August 31st in 2010, so our school doesn’t generally hold back. I’ll confirm once I know but I don’t doubt the 4 point drop; I had assumed it would drop 2-3 based on Clapuma’s method.
