Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2013

Figures… Finally get GC to tell me about son’s qualifying or not and they say he didn’t. Problem is that he has a 220 for Maine (prev cutoffs have been 212). So unless Maine jumped 9 points he should be all set. He put the wrong graduation year on the form. Then GC was supposed to have it fixed. I followed up in July and it was never fixed. I got it fixed through NMSC and they sent a letter confirming he was now eligible.

Must be a glitch due to the mixup. NMSC isn’t open and won’t be until Tuesday morning. Bummer.

Had a confirmation of 212 today. 209 doesn’t make it. In Florida

gocougs, I hope you are wrong, but afraid you are right. :(

Holy Cow, gocougs. Just received an email from GC. My son is a finalist in WA with a 217!

Bethorama33 - you know what is scarey? If you were not as knowledgeable about this process and scores, a lot of parents would have taken the GC’s word that the score didn’t make it and be done with it. How sad would that be?

My CA daughter just got word that her score of 223 made it.

good god, I was got a great scare when I read 232 for CA. LOL.

i’m still waiting for the news. I’m just praying that the score didn’t go up more than 3 points from last year’s 221…

really?! congrats! this post just made me smile because I got a 224 and i was scared that I would be on the borderline. but I guess I made it in… :D

So far 23 states already have lower scores than last year… many with two or three points below. And the numbers are not all out yet. I wonder if these numbers are representative of the SATs too. It would certainly take pressure off students if they knew next years’ class will not be as strong academically as a whole.

The US high school senior population was larger last year, too. maybe last year’s higher numbers are more indictive of a larger population taking the test.

These numbers are exact:

KS=212; Last Year 214
MO=211 Last Year 213
NE=207 Last Year 209
NJ=221 Last Year 223
OK=206 Last Year 209
TN=210 Last Year 214
WA=218 Last Year 220

These have yet to be determined, but clearly show a lower score thna last year’s …

My son hasnt heard from his school on whether he made it (school doesnt start until Tuesday), but yesterday he did get a postcard from a college saying “congratulations on being recognized by National Merit”. His score, 218, is 5 points lower than last year’s cutoff for our state. I know scores are lower this year, but 5 points lower seems too much to hope for. I concluded he was “out” when scores first came out, but since receiving that postcard…
Dont want to get my hopes up, but what do you think? could a university somehow know he made it before he does? Or, does the school just know that he is “commended” and not a semi-finalist. The card doesnt use the word “semi-finalist”.

Arkansas’ scores are 8 points lower than last years.

There is always hope.

Well Tenn dropped four points - so anything is possible. I would also think the postcard could be for any NMF status, including commended.

A lot of schools announced last year was their most competitive and smartest class ever. But I assumed it was because the schools added more foreign students. I didn’t know that the American students scored better too.

Congrats SMMboys, the 218 was told to me by my principal. I’m glad he was wrong

I believe AR was 205 (not 213) last year.

GA, Lowest qualifier in my school is 214. Dropped 4 points from 218 last year!
