Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2013

Seriwe:

Please explain this contradiction?

any hope for 215 in TX?

Good luck 2013 Collegegirl - Hope you make it!!! :)

ekirkeeng please read post #178

How about New York? Any confirmed cutoff?

The state level data suggested more downward pressure for Mass. than Calif. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mass dropped 2 (to 221) to then see CA drop only 1 (to 220).

ekirkeeng: We have a clear confirmation of a 214 NMSF in IL. It is possible your principal was mistaken. I suggest you call NMSC after September 12 if you feel the need to investigate further. We will leave the IL info as is until we see more data.

SMMboys: Yes, it was clear you did not claim a cutoff. I have corrected the information below.

Twinkiegirl: There is not mystery here. People who want to be helpful sometimes make mistakes.

10(?) Boarding school regions
NE region=221
These usually are set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states in the region.

Internationals=?
This usually is set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among all the individual states.

Commended (national cutoff)=200
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not a NMSF receives commended status. This group represents the highest 50,000 scorers.

what about NY?anybody made it?

With regard to the IL cutoff.

I have the PSAT report sheet in front of me. Score = 214.

I also have the physical letter from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in front of me:

"Dear xxxxxxx

Congratulations! …"

with the login to complete the application.

No question that 214 qualifies.

? about the NE boarding school cutoff posted at 221: Which states are included in the “region?” If CT is among the states in the NE region, the CT lowest reported score is 222. But someone must have some reliable intel to have put that NE BS 221 score in bold. Any advice?

CT probably is in the NE region and this bodes well for a lower cut-off score there, but this is all inference and second-hand information. We would much rather have a first-hand report of the CT cut-off or at least of a lower qualifying score to edit into the list.

The NE boarding school cutoff was first reported ambiguously, without a region specified. The region was later specified to me in a PM (see post #143).

If anyone is certain about the geography of and NMSC scoring practices for boarding schools, please share.

Any other confirmations for NC?

Still seems as if a 222 or higher would get NMSF ANYWHERE. Right?

If anyone from NH hears anything, please post!

First, I would like to thank everyone for sharing information and think this site is very helpful for parents! I have a question about the NMSF instructions my child received. It says that the SF must earn scores that confirm their 2011 PSAT/NMSQT performance but gives no clues as to what that score must be. Any thoughts or advice would be most appreciated! I wish I could offer more help as to a new cutoff score - but am unfortunately in a state where our score has already been posted.

Here’s the thread that discusses this:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/1359735-i-dont-understand-verification-score-sat-psat.html</a></p>

Mystified, the info is here: http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf</a>.

General consensus is that a 2000 is good enough to confirm the score. Everyone agree?

MystifiedMom…Congrats on your child’s NMSF status!! The “qualifying” score required on the SAT is usually around 1970 or higher historically, so you’ll usually see folks reference a score of 2000 or better just to be safe. That score can be from an SAT taken anytime between September of the student’s sophomore year through December of their senior year.

You should read through the Important FAQ thread located at the top of the National Merit Scholarship threads. It will help you through a lot of the process and answer most of the questions you’ll probably be coming up with. If not, feel free to ask your questions anywhere on the NM forums. Folks here are always willing to help. Here’s a link to the FAQ thread.

^^Just like I said…folks here are really helpful!! :)

Thanks so much for the quick response on the SAT info. Son scored a 2160 - so that seems to be above the thresholds discussed. Appreciate the help - and good luck to everyone still waiting to hear. Hope you receive news soon!
