Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2013

Looks like it is 212 for Ohio - dd missed by one point!!!

My apologies to Datnab - looks to be legit!

So a lot of people have been PMing me about this:

The cut-off PSAT score is 220 in CA. I got 220. My guidance counselor told me I made National Merit Semifinalist.

My daughter missed by one point in Ohio too. :(

I am done for tonight. Any more PMs will be answered tomorrow, or another day… I’m glad I could help who I could.

Datnab is legit! He has a list (the book they send to all the school counselors) with every student’s name who is a semifinalist organized by highschool. Send him a PM. :)

Thanks for being so helpful, Datnab! I sent you a PM; feel free to wait until it’s convenient to reply. :)

Datnab is a generous friend to the CC community (as well as very brave). This thread has already generated nearly 100,000 views. That’s a lot of potential private messages!

Pscyhoanalyze: I’m sorry but the reasoning you offered in your last two sentences

does not support the first. Unless you can say with certainty that your GC told you that the CA cut-off score was 220 and not just that you qualified I think we have to leave the possibility of a lower cut-off on the list until we hear more. Congratulations on making NMSF.

Does anyone know about a 208 in Nevada???

I sent you a PM, Datnab. Thank you so much for your help!!!

I sent you a PM, Datnab! Anything you can tell me would help

@lanaryu
no one is doing any whining? I was simply pointing out a contradiction.
People like you are annoying.

Hornman57: Datnab was right on about the list from my son’s school. He had a 206 which did not make it. Earlier posts had a 207 not making it and a 209 making it.

Datnab: thank you for PMing me back and I will most definitely keep it to myself.

Jerryspiteri: I’ve PM’d him and am now anxiously awaiting his reply! It seems that the 208 will confirm Nevada’s cutoff.

Datnab, I got error due to your PM is full, will you?

There’s something disturbing about this process here. You have 50,000 children whose families were informed several months ago that they were in the running for NMSF and are anxiously awaiting the results. The NMSC has known for some time now which students have made it, but instead of informing the relevant families directly, they chose to send the results to thousands of school administrators across the country. (For a sample excerpt from last year’s list see: <a href=“Township High School District 211 / Homepage”>http://www.d211.org/pdf/National_Merit_Semifinalists_ILL_2012.pdf</a>)

If you are a student in Iowa trying to plan campus visits, college applications, college financing, etc. you might like to know sooner rather than later whether your family is eligible to take advantage of Iowa State’s generous National Merit scholarship. However, you have to either wait for the press release in 2 weeks or see if there is a guidance counselor (perhaps one in New York City?) who would be kind enough to let you know if you are on “the list.”

It would be one thing if each school only knew about its own students. It’s quite another to distribute the results to thousands of school administrators nationally, but leave the actual semi-finalists out of the loop. Once that list was distributed it could no longer be considered confidential and the NMSC shouldn’t pretend that it is at the expense of the students and their families.

Clapuma: I agree completely. When my daughter was getting ready to take the test, I hoped that she would either score well above the historic cutoffs in our state, or well below. She scored well above! But I sympathize with the people who have been in the gray area for many months, and its possible that their college choices and plans will change completely after they get good or bad news from National Merit.

I had the same problem! :(

Agreed. Why is a book like this even distributed to HS? I could see an administer wanting to know how his/her school stacked up compared to other schools in the district or even state, but why does some principal in another state get to know weeks before my kid whether he made it?
