Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2013

Do you think 222 will be sufficient for WA? It was 220 last year

Clapuma answered the identical question for me earlier.

Statistically only a few very high performing states can be close to the 99+ cutoff. Much fewer students make that cutoff than make NMSF. Consider the cutoffs for the very highest performing states over the past 5 years (indicated years are test year/graduating class year):

…06/08 07/09 08/10 09/11 10/12 11/13
99+…223…222…223…222…224…222
NJ…221…220…221…221…223…TBD
MA…223…221…221…223…223…TBD
DC…223…221…221…223…223…TBD
CA…217…217…218…219…221…TBD
MD…221…220…221…220…221…TBD

That is one of the reasons, for example, I predicted CA to drop 2 this year. Though CA has been improving in recent years, there has remained some distance between the CA cutoff and the 99+ cutoff.

Silly question, I know, as I’m on the west coast…but what makes DC such a high performer? Isn’t that a low SES area, or am I completely mishugenah?

waiting waiting waiting with a 221 in maryland! for the past 5 years the cut off has see-sawed between 220 and 221. so nervous! will post here as soon as i am notified if i made the cut :)

what is the earliest students are usually contacted?

also, what is the typical cutoff for the competition for the hispanic recognition scholars competition? is one notified at the same time for both competitions?

September. But if you ask nicely, your school GC or headmaster might tell you  They should know now or by Monday or Tuesday since the results were mailed last Monday.

DC has a smaller population and low performing schools but with some highend private schools where students might be getting high scores across board.

So 99+ can be a higher number which may not be an accurate reflection of having higher performance across board.

Cubanita, the NHRP cutoff has been determined. Your score will make it easily. It’s usually below 200 in all regions.

Does anyone know if a high school does not have any NMSF if that high school will still be notified of the states number for this year? If so does it get sent at the same time as the schools that do have semi-finalists? Thanks

The schools also get notified of the national achievement scholars. So the number will be there in that notification.

@Youdon’tsay thanks! i’m guessing i’ll likely just receive a letter about it when i get back to school…just curious, where did you find that info?

220 in North Carolina makes the cut-off.

Congratulations: Wiscfan & NeedAVacation!!! That is great news!

As everyone posts their state’s number this year it might be helpful if you can post last years number for your state if you know it. That way the rest of us can see if the downward trend is following through as surmised. What do you think?

cubanita, just years of living on cc! You should head over to the Hispanic subforum under the College Admissions forum. Lots of info there. Apparently, some people have received their letters.

The problems you hear about for DC is in the public school system. About 27% of DC high school students are in private schools (almost 3x the national average). They are usually the children of well-educated and fairly well-off parents. This makes for an unusually concentration of high test-scorers. Indeed the concentration might even be higher than any state’s. The history of cut-offs shows that DC’s always ties the highest state score. This has led to inference/speculation that DC is simply assigned the highest state-off in deference to its somewhat artificial concentration of high test scores. I have never seen this “officially” confirmed but it does appear to be true.

baha, time to bug the counselor! :D

What does mishugenah mean?
