Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2013

Schok, it means “crazy,” or roughly the equivalent.

Congrats in NC to the latest NMSF qualifier! :)

Thank you, and good luck to everyone else.

My daughter scored 213 in SC. No word yet on if she made to semifinalist. Any predictions on the cutoff score for SC this year based on trends? Last year cutoff was 211.

Well, your D is in a good situation. It’s unlikely (but possible) that SC would rise by 3 points (to 214) and keep your D from making NMSF.

@Clapuma maryland had a ~1% increase in number of test takers this year and took 20-50% dives in the number of 75-80 scorers across the board. obviously then the number of 70-74 scorers increased up to around 20% but the overall mean scores for each category were slightly lower. any idea what that could mean for the state this year?

I don’t see as big of an improvement in the numbers for MD as for some other states. The numbers are similar to 2008, which was also a 221 cutoff. Perhaps MD will remain in the 220/221 range again this year.

Does anyone have an estimate for Delaware’s score?

221 still safe in VA? Concerned that high achievers from Thomas Jefferson and Governors School might bust the trend. Any thoughts?

216 is still a solid estimate for texas right? Im leaning towards 216, but really nervous.

220 in nj any hope?

I hope you’re right, Jason1.

My son is at a meeting at school today even though school does not start until after Labor Day. He will be asking about the cut off number for NJ while there. We are not sure if he will get an answer, but if so I will post. He has a 221. Crossing my fingers for both of you. We are from South Jersey. What part of Jersey are you from?

S’s principal said the scores haven’t arrived but that there usually is an “embargo date,” before which they can’t be released to the students. Huh?

vryproudmom^

Wow, thanks for your help I’m from central jersey the scores in my school were real low this year we had one 224 and two 220s. Hoping that trend was replicated throughout jersey.

Ohrye1^
He did not find out today but has to go back tomorrow. Hopefully we will know tomorrow.

Packet came in the mail* today!!! A 221 makes it for Georgia!!!

Thank you, GAMomto4, and congratulations to your son.

mummy24: there is an “embargo date” somewhere in mid-September. There’s not supposed to be any media publicity about who made NMSF before then. However, it doesn’t mean that the student’s aren’t supposed to be notified before then. Different schools read the rules in different ways and some take the embargo date to mean that students can’t be told before then. Wrong.

Exactly. The “embargo date” is simply the date (September 12 this year) on which the school can notify local media. They can inform student qualifiers any time before that. The principal can call the NMSC to verify this if s/he wishes. Of course this could mean the school would be admitting they have been misinterpreting the directive for many years…

This drove me nuts the year my son qualified. I have some old words of advice. If you don’t hear from your school soon after scores are posted and when you think you should have been notified, GO LOOKING FOR THEM! Some schools invariably don’t look for scores, don’t know what they are, get lost in the mail shuffle, whatever. Especially if your school is one where NMSF are far and few between. There are always the horror stories of NMSF who were never notified and then didn’t complete the requirements in time to get their award. Good luck to everyone!
