My daughter told me that they were told when taking the PSAT not to worry about National Merit as no one ever gets it. Rather an odd statement! I am certain that there are at least two others. I will phone tomorrow.

I’ve been following this thread with interest since hopefully my son will be in the running next year.

The local news station reported on the number of students receiving NMSF status. They went on to say: “National Merit Finalists will be chosen early next calendar year after students take their ACT exams.” I’m sure College Board will contact ACT to get the scores from the semi-finalists’ ACT to qualify those students! haha

expatlondon - maybe nobody ever gets it because the school doesn’t complete their part of the paperwork!

How many of those semi-finalists that don’t make it to finalist fail to do so because the paperwork isn’t completed? How many of them fail to complete it because of their schools - either the schools don’t do it, or downplay the program?

Wow, my state journal which released the Dane County (Madison WI) list completely missed our school. We have four students who made it as well. They included our school last year and last time I checked our school is still in Dane County. This is not cool. It makes our school look terrible when we actually are above average (4 semifinalist with class of 300 students).

Hi, brand new member here. Pdxsuzanne and buddyolboy, I haven’t seen any press covering schools in Washington county or Tigard. Cannot find a list or Oregon either.
My daughter was informed by her school that she qualified.

buddy and mompdx–I emailed Nicole The O’s education reporter and asked when they were going to run an article. Have not heard back. I believe because St. Mary’s is a private school, they have their own PR person send out the info to the press.

Re. Oregon list: pdxsuzanne, that’s a good idea, I’ll contact her tomorrow morning, will also try to reach out to KPTV and see if they have a press release. Will contact the Bend Chronicle and see if they have any news too.

elitenoob, you need to contact the Wisconsin State Journal, if your school has not already done so, and tell them. They will print a revised list, I’m sure. Are you in Waunakee, Oregon, Verona? Try regional reporter Barry Adams, badams@madison.com or education reporter Mathew DeFour, mdefour@madison.com

Oregonians, DH thinks our kids will be in the paper tomorrow…in that extra part where a lot of these type of announcements go. Anyone have other thoughts?

I saw the announcement for SMA…very cool! And it went out like 1st thing, which was quite awesome!!

Re. Oregon semi finalists: A reporter from the Oregonian called back this morning. I was informed that there are 216 semi finalists from Oregon and that there are no plans of printing the entire list in the paper. The SMA announcement was on the oregonlive blog. Any reader is welcome to go in there and write up an entry. Finalist names, when announced, will be printed in the newspaper.
If anyone has heard differently, please post.

jocobuffy, my daughter’s score also dropped, quite significantly, from soph to junior year. She did make the cut-off for NMSF anyway, but I can tell you that the score drop turned out to be a surprise blessing, even though she was really bummed out at first. She realized she needed to review some math for the SAT, something she would never have done if her score had not dropped, and ended up with a 2340 when she sat for the test in June.

If your DD hasn’t taken the SAT yet, have her review the stuff she missed on the PSAT. She should do very well!

I called the NMSC yesterday and explained that although I know my son is a semifinalist, I am having difficulty getting return emails from his guidance department to be able to have him work on the process of becoming a finalist.

NMSC explained that there is nothing they can do where they are a non-profit organization but siad they could give me more information on the process to better help me to try to get his guidance department to help him. They said to start by contacting the principal where they first send him/her a letter from them in the end of August that contains the school’s sign on information. Then when the semifinalists are named they need to log in to the website using their login information and print out the congratulatory letter to give to the student. This letter will contain information for the student to be able to log in.

They said they would be able to resend the principal’s letter if requested. They said my son’s school hadn’t logged in at all. There just happens to be a brand new principal at his school this year. So I sent him an email yesterday, only to find out from my son that he’s out for a while with broken ribs from a motorcycle accident! I will be one glad parent when he is named a finalist because this process has been completely frustrating for us from the beginning to what’s looking like all the way to the end!!! And the sad part is that it has nothing to do with NMSC, just the guidance office…
