I’m a semifinalist for this, and I remember receiving a letter of commendation before that allowed me to list two schools I wanted to inform about this. I put that off and now I’ve lost the letter, so I was just wondering if I could still do that, and if so how. I completely forgot about this and I wasn’t sure what colleges I was applying to.

I actually confused the wording here, I believe. I’m a semifinalist from Illinois with a score of 220 when the cutoff was 214 or so. I got the letter of commendation that told me I could report to two colleges that I did well, but now I’ve lost that letter and I was wondering if I could still do that.

The deadline for that was 5/23. I’m looking at the letter now. The website to which you reported this info was shut down after that date and the info was sent to colleges during the summer, according to the letter. If you want colleges to know how you did now, be sure to list NMSF on your application in the awards section. Some universities have special boxes on the app to check off for NMSF.

Yes, that is past now… you need to focus in on your NMF application work instead. Concensus seems to be that it does not mean a lot to notify those two schools anyway… You will notice that your application for NMF asks if you have a college selected. It is okay to leave this undecided, then fill it in in a couple of months (you can go back and change that).

Don’t worry about naming the 2 schools, that is NOT important.

HOWEVER, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you submit the NMSF info.

Did your school tell you that you’re a NMSF? If not, go to your GC and ask about that. If she doesn’t know anything about, then have her call National Merit Corporation.

Your PSAT is high enough for NMSF in your state.

that letter that you rcvd asking you to name 2 schools is what they sent to all high scorers back in the spring. its not the same of letter of commended scholar

I just finalized my application, but not without making a spelling error and a grammatical mistake. The spelling error is unfortunately indisputable. The grammatical error, on the other hand, will perhaps be unnoticed by 99% of people, seeing that the rule is never taught in schools nowadays and that even reputable magazines commit the same “mistake.”

Will I still make SF? My SAT scores, GPA, etc. are all stellar.

^I’m not sure, but it seems doubtful. To give you an accurate chancing I’ll need the exact mistakes and your english grades from the past 11 years.

napalm2013, you are kidding IceQube, right? They are not going to keep Ice Qube from moving on to Finalist for one little spelling error? If the rest of the app is great, especially with the outsanding grades and SAT (and I bet the teacher letter is good), they are not going to keep Ice Qube out for 1 little spelling error. They will figure it was a typo. Remember, 15,000 of the 16,000 semi-finalists move on to finalist. From what we have heard, the main reason for not moving on is when a kid just does not bother to jump through the hoops (ie do all of the steps)–or if the SAT is under around 2000.

Love Napalm’s response. Are you sure 11 years are enough?

Also, cut-off score is 1960 according to others on cc (and my H) so if you made the cut-off even in the lowest state range, your score on the real SAT should translate to higher than 1960. At least that is what I’m hoping since S13 is taking the test on Saturday & I don’t think he’s put too much time into prep. If his score translates to SAT 2200 I figure he has a little wiggle room. Fingers crossed for all who are taking SAT to “validate” PSAT scores.

I live in Florida and my score is 211. I got the April letter and sent scores to two colleges. From my understanding, everyone who got the letter will be guaranteed AT LEAST “commended student” status, right? I know I am several points under the FL cutoff (215ish?) for semifinalist but I REALLY hope I get commended student. My counselor hasn’t recieved anything yet. Do you think I will get commended?

I am not sure why there is so much confusion about this. Anyone who took the test in 2011 who is now a high school senior (i.e., planning to graduate in the 2012-13 academic year) and received a PSAT score of 200 or higher and who did not qualify as a NMSF should be recognized as a Commended Student. If your school has not yet told you that you are my advice is to call the NMSC to verify your status.

Leaf, the cutoff score in Florida is 211. If your score was 211 you should be NMSF. Here is a link to the Florida list. http://media.bradenton.com/smedia/2012/09/10/10/26/12Oqye.So.69.pdf Are you on it? If not, and you are certain of your score, call NMSC (847) 866-5100 to find out why you are not on the list. If you are on the list, either have NMSC give you your login info to complete your NMF paperwork, or talk to your GC to have him/her get it. You need to talk with GC anyway, because they have paperwork to complete as well and for most schools the deadline is 10/10.

GC emailed me that she finished her part and sent it last week. Yay! I just hope everything got done right, DS is the first ever NMSF from his high school.

Thanks so much for your help! I called and they told me that Commended certificates were delivered September 18, so I’m trying to hunt my school office for what should be my certificate. I actually got a 209; I lost my score sheet and was confused! But I got commended and am very excited. Congratulations to everyone!!

Please help - I have received college letters saying that I am a National Merit Semifinalist, but College Board has not notified me on how to access nor complete the application.

I’m from Arizona and got a score of 215.

What is this October 10th deadline for? I’m actually on fall break.

What did your SCHOOL give you? You need to talk to your GC.

Since you’re on break, maybe some here can type of the Essay Prompt so you can work on that today and tomorrow. And, maybe they can include anything else that you can work on before getting the actual application.
