@cookli what was your EFC? And the other schools that gave your son money, was it merit or need-based? That is an important distinction.
Lol, BU results came out today… BUT GO NORTHEASTERN HUSKIES!!
Accepted into CSSH and the University Honors Program!
1850 SAT
3.95 UW GPA
Well written essay and guessing fairly good recommendations. Living abroad in Guatemala.
Goes to show that test scores aren’t everything!
I wonder about comments upthread about Northeastern making decisions based on ability to pay. Our EFC is high. It does not mean we could pay the full tuition, but it is the reason D applied mostly to schools that give merit aid. However, Northeastern is the only school that did not give her any merit aid. She got very excited to receive the acceptance for Fall (not NUin) and then it was a let down since she knew that no merit meant no go. We have not received any paper mail, this is only from the website.
She had a lot of interest in this school. We visited. She kept them updated with any new accomplishments and if they had given some merit, it could have been the school for a kid like her with lots of broad interests.
BTW in 2010 D1 applied to Northeastern and got generous merit with similar stats. I am sure our EFC comparable to the tuition at that time was similar. She went elsewhere because she got accepted to a more selective school at the time. However, when she tagged along on the college visit, she noted how much Northeastern has changed.
Congrats to all who can attend.
@lia_b curious at your d’s stats and where else she got merit aid. My d got tons of merit aid elsewhere too, however, NEU seems more selective than the places that gave aid now. I feel she was just lucky to get in at all after seeing who else didn’t get in. Our CSS Profile basically said WE NEED AID lol.
It seems like early action applicants got it pretty bad this year, probably cause of early decision.
@redpoodles. She got merit from American, Emerson, Umass Amherst, U South Carolina. I think I am missing someone here but that’s what I can recall right now. She had 31ACT, Her GPA was 97 but don’t know what it translated to 4.0 scale. This included college courses. Also AP Scholar and Honor roll, Steady volunteer work with disabled children, an internship in senior year and a part time job. School extra curriculars included: stage crew, video crew, piano and officer for school magazine, She had very good recs. She applied undecided so I wonder if that had anything to do with it. I guess we will never know. She does feel proud that she got in but sad she can’t go.
I hope you got some aid. I know we were not going to get any aid but we hoped for some merit.
I am glad this part is over. I get exhausted just looking at all the stuff these kids do.
@lia_b perhaps you can call Northeastern and ask them for more aid?
@JalapenoGreens We thought about that and not sure if it will work. We did that with D1 with U of Chicago and they did give more $. However, that was five years ago. I want her to look at the curriculum again and see if she really sees herself there at this point before I make any calls.
They are having accepted students day in a couple of weeks and I am asking her if she wants to go talk with someone then but maybe calling will be less stressful.
@lia_b those are great stats however if you look at the stats of people who did get “merit aid” at NEU they are all a bit higher (NM finalists, etc). I think NEU has climbed a tier or half a tier up beyond those other schools and it was just way more overall competitive.
We still don’t have a financial aid package!!! They “forgot” to process it! I hope there’s something left grant wise or it will be impossible here too.
@lia_b; Merit aid generally goes to the top 25% of admitted students. The mid 50% of ACT scores last year was 31-33.
The problem is their net price calculator shows I qualify for 24k merit yet was offered nothing. Some students lower EFC got merit with same stats. I understand it is a business, but most other npc were spot-on. Butler, Xavier, Case Western. I did find Fordhams merit the same as Norteastern. Northeastern needs to adjust their NPC if that is the case in order to avoid disappointed applicants.
Accepted (D’Amore)
SAT: 1870
GPA: Didn’t really have a GPA since I’m an international student
Essay was pretty good
Reco’s were pretty good too I suppose
Should I be surprised? Super happy tho!
Certainly most merit goes to top 25% but I would not doubt, they also give out merit amounts beyond that group as they probably want some diversity in their student body. Prior to application deadlines, they even sent her an application fee waiver based on her grades, scores and hard work. So yes, we were surprised about the lack of any merit given some interest from their side, not just the regular junk mailings that come in.
It seems there is a lot going on this year as they continue to climb up the tiers.
@lia_b I think a lot of people got that… I am prepared to be very disappointed in the aid too. My D’s ACT is 32, right smack in the middle. She got scholarships at every other school. (Wait, no scholarship at BU, but they did give a hefty grant.)
Is merit scholarship possible when accepted off the waitlist?
Likely there will be no merit aid if you are accepted off of the wait list. Merit aid goes to the top 25%, and if you are on the wait list you’re outside of that 25%.
I’m not sure that’s true. Some of these waitlisted folks have very high stats. It’s nuts!
Yeah, it definitely is. “Top 25%” doesn’t seem to be just stats-based, though.
If anyone knows of someone who’s gotten merit aid off the waitlist, let me know - I’d be glad to be proven wrong, since there are a lot of great students who seem to have been waitlisted.
So does NEU qualify financial aid by merit more or by need?
