Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: UNC CH Kenan-Flagler, NC State, haven’t heard back from anywhere else

Waiting to hear back from: Lots of reaches

@callmepop my son’s stats are very similar to yours but he did not apply EA … I 'm hoping he still has a chance! I keep reading that NEU looks mostly at the SAT ACT scores rather than anything else… Is this true?

I would say Northeastern puts heavier emphasis on SAT/ACT than some but GPA and EC’s are important too.

The first RD with scholarships are out. S was accepted today with a $15,000 scholarship.

D heard today. Honors College. Dean’s scholarship. Yay!

**Decision: Accepted **

Reflection

Strengths: pretty good numbers, top 5% at a fairly high performing public school, essays
Weaknesses: extracurriculars, for sure. with the exception of my leadership position I’m pretty un-involved compared to some of the people I’m seeing in this thread.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: in retrospect I have pretty good stats, and I had good essays (I hope). I think I made up for my weak ECs by showing how focused I was on the few that I partook in.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: don’t know yet, this is my first acceptance

General Comments : I visited NEU last spring, so I don’t know if that played a part in admissions (if any).
Congratulations to everyone who’s gotten in and best of luck to anyone who’s waiting!

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Only read one of the two, but the one I did read was a solid 9/10.

Teacher Rec #1: Did not read but it was my AP bio teacher (got an A in the class through hard work and she really saw me grow as a student)
Teacher Rec #2: Read- from AP Lang teacher. 9/10
Counselor Rec: Did not read, but I’ve managed a consistent relationship with my counselor since freshman year, but I do go to a medium sized school, so it was probably somewhat generic.

Strengths: Rigor of coursework, GPA, class rank, extracurricular
Weaknesses: SAT I would say
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I embody the “well-rounded student” thing well. But also my strengths above.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: -

General Comments :To start off, I have never written on college confidential before, and I am writing this solely for the people out there who see these crazy stats of other students who they’re competing for the same spot in in the same school with and begin to lose hope. I was one of them. I am a moderately average smart person, but believe me when I say that I worked really really hard all 4 years of hs to get to where I am today. I’m not the smartest in my class naturally, but I think I do a good job making up what I lack in talent in handwork. Yea my sat scores were not over the moon, which was honestly my main concern- that and the fact that I wasn’t in a very advanced math class- but I do well in math. SO PLEASE, YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU SET YOUR MIND TO! Besides academics and a bunch of extracurricular that I really am just too lazy to mention, It helped that I am black, and a female who’s going into stem. Anyways long story short please don’t let these crazy numbers make you feel low. You got this! But also know that they are your competitors- but peers. I am SO SO SO happy to have been accepted and it finally feels like 4 years of hard work has payed off.

@HelloHello54321 As an an applicant still waiting for my admissions decision, I want to thank you for sharing your information! We seem to be very similar in many aspects and I’m glad to see that someone with so many similarities got in! I’m so happy for you and your post really makes me hopeful!

Congrats to those accepted! I did not receive a decision. Does that mean I most likely did not get in/did not get any merit aid?

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Very involved artist (what I wrote my common app essay on), graphic designer for a DIY music label, LGBT club president, editor in chief of school newspaper.
Job/Work Experience:
Internship at a well established gallery, internship at a world renowned art museum (LACMA), summer camp counselor.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
8-9. Strong essay on the power of art through an analysis of my medium of choice (collage) and it’s properties. Think it showed a developed voice and understanding of art.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1:
(9) Written by my english teacher. She’s a heavily religious Jew and I wrote a story on the Holocaust for creative writing which she said made her cry (in a good way). I’m sure she included that in my application and it probably helped my case a lot.
Teacher Rec #2:
(10) Written by my art history teacher who loved me so much. She chaperoned a school trip I was on and we bonded a lot. She told me I was her second son, so I think she probably wrote the best recommendation she could.
Counselor Rec:
(7) Generic recommendation as I go to a public school in a big city.
Additional Rec: N/A

Other

State (if domestic applicant): CA

Reflection

Strengths: My essays, recommendations, and test scores
Weaknesses: grades maybe
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Strong focus on art throughout my extracurriculars, good test scores, wonderful recommendations. Also being a different kind of student than most other Northeastern applicants (more interested in humanities than sciences, and science is what Northeastern is known for) probably helped me a lot.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere else yet

General Comments : Accepted to the University Honors Program with a Dean’s Scholarship

Okay, I was accepted to D’Amore-McKim for Accounting with a 16k scholarship, but it doesn’t seem as though I was accepted into the honors college. Does anybody know if this is hidden or I just got unlucky?

@Bulldog97
Congrats on your acceptance! However, I don’t think it’s hidden. I’ve looked everywhere for my nonexistent ‘Scholarship’ tab; I guess I just didn’t get any money. At least I got in(early). yay

**Decision: Accepted **

Applied (ED,EA,RD): RD

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): Never took
ACT (breakdown): 32
SAT II: Won’t mention
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.91 or 3.92 I forget
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank
AP (place score in parenthesis):
IB (place score in parenthesis): Predicted score around 37 or 38. Once again, don’t remember.
Senior Year Course Load:
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Can’t recall any, but I have some.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): The usual, like NHS, journalism, but I also had a few funky, really person ones. I didn’t try to put all my impressive activities…instead, I tried to create an application that truly reflected who I was. I even took out ones that were CA-worthy, because I just thought that those activities made me look too…not me (if that makes any sense).
Job/Work Experience: Nope none.
Volunteer/Community service: I had a lot of weird community service activities, including helping children in Vietnam, and a few Latin American countries. I didn’t include all of them in my app, though. I had been doing community service WAY before HS and didn’t want to fill up my activities with one event.
Summer Activities: Internship at a major newspaper company.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 9/10. It was personal, weird (the topic was a bit odd). Everyone that read it said it was amazing…but then again, everyone on CC raves about their essay. Opinions can be biased! I may THINK that my essay is a 9, but someone else might think it’s a -1 or something.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I wasn’t TOO close to my teachers. I had only known them for less than 3 years. But I still had a good bond with them. I really liked all my teachers that I asked recs for, and I’m positive that they wrote a good one for me.

Teacher Rec #1:
Teacher Rec #2:
Counselor Rec:
Additional Rec: I asked 2 people for my additional rec, but I don’t think NEU allows any, right?

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yup.
Intended Major: Neuro
State (if domestic applicant): None
Country (if international applicant): Won’t mention, but it’s an Asian country. But my school is in South/Latin America.
School Type: Small, private
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Won’t mention, but on the middle-high side.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection

Strengths: Essays, activities
Weaknesses: Race, scores (I could’ve tried harder, really. My goal was to get a 33 or a 34. Whatever, though. We always regret after).
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Because I’m FABULOUS whips unshowered hair
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Deferred: One Ivy (Dart.) Accepted nowhere else yet. This was my first letter. Not rejected yet (hopefully nowhere :frowning: )

General Comments : I also received a NEU Scholars Program – meaning FULL RIDE! I was so surprised. I was eating breakfast with my parents when I received an email telling me to go check the portal. I tried it on my phone, didn’t work, so I silently finished eating & decided to check it later. My parents were wondering why I was trying to leave early (I said I had to go poop lol. I almost DID shart my pants when I read the message!).

Good luck to all the other applicants. If you were accepted, CONGRATS. If you were rejected/waitlisted, please PLEASE don’t lose hope. I was deferred by my first choice (an Ivy), and it CRUSHED me. I was so devastated and I kept thinking ‘what if I don’t get into ANY school?’ Thoughts like these may haunt you and may try to bring you down, but keep your chin up. Whatever happens happens for a reason.

@Grapess Scholars is not full ride. It is full tuition plus many other perks but it does not cover room and board.

@TomSrOfBoston My mistake! I didn’t mean it that way. I just thought full ride sided cooler than full tuition.

Was anyone who was accepted to the honors program in their respective college not given any merit aid? I was admitted to the honors program in the CSS+H, but I got nothing :frowning:
