Official Northeastern ED/EA/RD Results Thread for H.S Class of 2016

Did everyone who got accepted today have their Mid-Year Report submitted? If I didn’t hear from NU today am I not eligible for merit scholarships?

Merit aid is also awarded on March but all the Scholars offers have been made.

Decision: Accepted With 15k International Scholarship

Applied (ED,EA,RD): RD

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2180 (730M 730CR 720W)
ACT (breakdown):
SAT II: 680 Math I, 680 Math II, 670 US History
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): I guess you could say 3.7, but I’m an international student so not really. I got AAD in my A-Levels (like the UK version of IB) in Maths, Politics and Further Maths respectively. I’m predicted an A in my History A-Level that I’m taking this year. In my GCSE’s I got 5A* 4A 1B.
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):
AP (place score in parenthesis):
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load:
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): I ran the political debating society at my school. Ran the mock election campaign for the Liberal democrat party. Ran probably 10 house events over two years (house singing, music, drama, debating etc.). I generally did quite a lot of stuff around school, gave a lot of politics, history and music talks, one on feminism.
Job/Work Experience:
Volunteer/Community service: I went on the school volunteering trip to Uganda, but I tried to avoid mentioning it in my application because I realised pretty soon after going that a bunch of rich white westerner kids going out to Africa to “teach” kids practically our own age maths they could probably already do better than me is pandering at best, highly offensive at worst.
Summer Activities: Chill with a few beers in the sun? Lol I’m not dedicated enough to give up my summer for anything.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Rah I don’t know how I could rate my own writing on a scale like that. Anyone who rates themselves a 10 must be hella arrogant. I wrote about my music, how I’d got picked up my Mike Skinner (of the Streets, one of the best British musical outfits ever imo), had label meetings with Parlophone etc. Basically how it just seemed to all fall in to place by luck, but how realistically all those years of me spouting my angry teenage musings and aggressive guitar chords to the wall in my room led to where I am now. I was pretty happy with it, at least it’s not generic.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 6 - Maths teacher so probably pretty rigid, he was an alright guy but didn’t really know me and I was shit in his modules, but he did see how hard I worked at revision and we’d get on pretty well when talking about non-maths stuff.
Teacher Rec #2: 9 - Politics teacher, she’s a joker and we all loved her. She told me she went really all out on her recommendation so must be pretty good. She also saw a lot of my extracurricular stuff cause a lot of it was politics related and the class was so relaxed so she heard about my music stuff a lot too.
Counselor Rec: They brought in some new woman to do American applications at my school while I was on my gap year so I’d never met her before, she would have asked my housemaster to do it but he’d just left the school so I think it wasn’t exactly the best it could have been.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection

Strengths:
Weaknesses: My D in Further Maths lol, lack of volunteering.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: SAT scores, hopefully quite different CommonApp and my international location.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Most of my decisions come out end of March. I was rejected from major scholarship consideration at USC. Got an offer with 30k scholarship from Albright.

General Comments : Northeastern was probably like 6th or 7th on my list. Was a pleasant surprise to get an offer and a scholarship this early on, will definitely be one of my top choices now, but tbh money is still a big issue for me. I’d have to take out a massive loan to go.

Same for me @lcs2016

General Comments : Advice: don’t be white and a middle class male, it sucks

General Comments :

Wondering if anyone from Long island was accepted in this round? When i look at the admissions counselors for our area i get this message. (there used to be a counselor Jessica Rezil)
No counselor is available for your area. Questions can be directed to admissions@neu.edu. A member of the admissions counseling team would be happy to assist.

@kristi4806 I, too, am freaking out! I’m on LI, too, and I haven’t heard back. Does anyone know why people are hearing earlier?

@schroscat I spoke to admissions today and confirmed that there IS in fact someone in the spot now covering for the old counselor that left them. She did say that they have to really review the schools and their “school report” before sending out decisions. I’d be surprised if anyone from Long Island was in the initial pool of acceptances but if they were they were reviewed before the counselor left maybe? My son has pretty comparable stats, a 32 ACT, amazing ECs, goes to a great private school with very hard classes and didn’t hear a thing… We are still hoping

Same for me @lcs2016 and @DynamicProphet

@kristi4806 Ah, okay, that makes more sense. I also go to a private school as well, and many of us are awaiting a decision from NU. NU, at least for me, is a match, so I’m hoping for the best; the last day to hear back is April 1st, so I’m staying hopeful until then. Thanks for the update!

@kristi4806 @sccr

Has anybody gotten any information about need-based aid yet?

@jessiatwi245 If you were accepted last week the need based aid would have been included as a tab on your acceptance portal.

@TomSrOfBoston but how is that possible since it wasn’t their financial aid deadline yet? I applied regular and got in, with a 12k Dean’s scholarship, but i hadn’t submitted my FAFSA yet so they couldn’t just decide to not consider me for need-based aid

@samrj2016 Did you submit the CSS?

yes, their aid page says they’ve received it @TomSrOfBoston
