Official Northeastern ED/EA/RD Results Thread for H.S Class of 2016

Hey guys! Let’s make a thread so it’s easier for kids in future years to look and find them. I know it helped me last year! I found this format off of another schools page so it doesn’t include NUin, so just note that if that is your case.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:

General Comments

Had a low GPA and was suspended for a week earlier this year but still got in with a scholarship!

Decision: Accepted with 15K Dean’s Scholarship

Applied EA

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2330 (730 writing, 800 CR and M)
SAT II: 800 Lit, 800 French
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9ish
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
AP (place score in parenthesis): N/A
IB (place score in parenthesis): English, Economics, Geography, and Biology HL. Math and French A SL. Scores pending May examinations.
Senior Year Course Load: (see above).
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Some history bowl awards on the national level, made European semifinals this spring. National Merit Semifinalist. Awards in debate.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Not going to detail them all. Lots of leadership and political ECs.
Job/Work Experience: Nothing special. One internship with local government (again politics)
Volunteer/Community service: Tutoring, soup kitchen.
Summer Activities: Johns Hopkins CTY, work.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App 7/10 (hard to rate myself, so I’m being conservative). Strong writer, decent topic, but not the sort to make AO’s cry.
Teacher Rec #1: 8-9/10 - English teacher who thinks my writing is much better than it actually is. Never an unkind word for any student.
Teacher Rec #2: 8/10 - History teacher who likes my sardonic approach to seemingly unimpeachable figures.
Counselor Rec: 8/10 - Likes me quite a lot, not sure why.
Additional Rec: N/A

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, but didn’t submit documents on time. With the scholarship, another funding source, and likely National Merit Finalist, NEU will cost less than my current HS or nothing at all with NMF. Probably just going to cancel the application.
Intended Major: Political science
Country (if international applicant): France
School Type: Small private
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: No idea.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): US dual national (other passport is from a small underrepresented, country).

Reflection

Strengths:
Weaknesses: White male, very little demonstrated interest.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Diversity as a dual citizen. Test scores (NEU trying to move up in the rankings). Near-perfect predictions as an IB student with 4 HL subjects. Everything else was decent or strong.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere yet

General Comments : Love how the portal overlays “YOU ARE IN” with that beautiful shot of the campus. Managed to tick off a lot of the family by applying - BC is the family school. Good luck, everyone.

@NotVerySmart From what @TomSrOfBoston has said, NEU does not stack Merit. So if you get the 30K National Merit, you won’t get the 15K deans or any other merit from NEU. So keep your FA app in.

@suzyQ7 The policy seems to have changed this year. Here’s what the “terms and conditions” section of my scholarship offer reads:

Looks like the only circumstance where they’d reduce a scholarship is if they’d actually be paying me money above and beyond tuition, to make sure I don’t spend on an HDTV or a car or 1/16th of a Super Bowl ticket.

Decision: Accepted

Applied (ED,EA,RD): EA

Objective:
SAT I: didn’t send

Rank: Top 7-10% (School doesnt do exact rank or percentile either)
AP: Haven’t taken any tests yet
IB: none
Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics C, AP Calc B/C, AP French, AP Psych, Honors English, Honors Anthropology

Summer Activities: Pretty much same as ECs, work, and CS

Teacher Rec #1: 6.5/10, doesnt really know me, but I had to use a STEM teacher for one of them
Teacher Rec #2: 10/10, he loves me and knows how much I want to go here
Counselor Rec: 10/10
Additional Rec: 8/10, from my boss/karate instructor so that looks good, but he’s not a great writer

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes (got 16k in merit and tentative offer for financial)
Intended Major: Behavioral Neuroscience
State (if domestic applicant): MA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Middle
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Literally nothing

Reflection

Strengths: Test scores, GPA, Senior course load, ECs and CS
Weaknesses: Not taking APs before senior year, essay, rec #1
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Showed interest, stats matched up, parents are alumni
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Tulane University, jury is out for everywhere else

I just tried getting on the main site to see the merit admissions language I saw previously, and the system is down. Must be everyone logged in for results!

how are you notified of decisions? I checked my email, mail, and the application status check page. stressing so much right now

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Finance
State (if domestic applicant): None
Country (if international applicant): Middle Eastern Country
School Type: International- Private
Ethnicity: White (Arab)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Idk
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): International willing to pay full? (But I got scholarship so idk.)

Reflection: My application showed that I am down to earth, a great student at school, acceptable testing

Strengths: IELTS Score, courseload, school grades
Weaknesses: A few spelling mistakes in my application, AP Chem score?,
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Essay + Recommendations + School grades
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: This was my first decision.

General Comments : On paper, grades-wise, I was definitely not the strongest. Everyone gets As at school. I actually invested much of my time focusing on my ECs and Essays. I made it clear that I am an involved person and that I am willing to give my 100% to anything that I intend to pursue. Try your best everyone & YOU WILL MAKE IT. By the way I think only 1 or 2 people on CC told me that I could get in, let alone get a scholarship. CC is very harsh. Focus on the aesthetic parts of your application. Grades do not show personality. You guys can and will do this at some point for some college! Don’t stress if your test scores or grades aren’t amazing. I think my grades were good enough for admission but my personality got me the scholarship. Goodluck to all! Please private me if you need tips on how to enrich your application without lying.

@justheretotalk They are releasing by region so if you are further away from the Northeast, chances are you are going to get notified later tonight. Some people say they have gotten a phone call but I just checked the portal after getting an email

@TomSrOfBoston Interesting. The two policies seem at odds, so I wonder which one takes precedence (I suppose it’s usually the one that saves the university money, but who knows?).

In either case, whether it’s 15K for the Dean’s or 30K for National Merit, I’ve worked out that a third-party funding source will cover all remaining tuition.

Decision: Deferred

Reflection

Strengths: Courses since freshman year focus on engineering, pretty good ECs, good essay, etc.
Weaknesses: GPA is a “underwhelming,” weak math classes (repeated algebra I freshman year b/c i did crap on the math placement exam for my high school) and unimpressive math grades prior to senior year (skipped a math level to AP Calc AB).

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Still waiting on three others, wish me luck!

General Comments: I am definitely not the strongest student at my school grade wise, but what I lacked in grades I made up that deficiency with my extra curriculars, engineering course load, etc.

Just remember guys, college is just one stage of life and is not the ultimate determinant for your future. Your future is ultimately determined on the amount of effort you put in and how successful you want to be. Lastly, relax. This is your last year of high school, so just enjoy your final few months with your family and friends. Good luck everyone with your college admissions!
