SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t take
ACT (breakdown): 35 composite, 1 sitting. 33 Math, 36 English, 35 Reading, 35 Science.
SAT II: 790 Math II, 750 Bio M
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.87

AP (place score in parenthesis): Biology (5) US History (5) Language and Composition (5) Calc AB (5) Statistics (5)
IB (place score in parenthesis): None
Senior Year Course Load: AP Government, AP Macroeconomics, AP Literature, AP Physics, Yearbook, Teacher’s Aide
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Yearbook (Editor in Chief, 3 years)
Varsity Track (Unofficial Jumps Leader, 3 years)
Acts of Random Kindness Club (Treasurer, 3 years)
Key Club (Editor, 3 years)
Design It Club (Vice Pres, 1 year)

Job/Work Experience: Two summers at a very science + arts geared camp for elementary and middle school students. Technically a part time job, but spent 6 hrs a day, 5 days a week there for the entire break.
Volunteer/Community service: 300+ hours, but very little of it long term. Got most through Key Club. Some volunteering at a Chinese culture summer camp.
Summer Activities: See job/work experience. The one summer that I wasn’t at camp, I spent taking a Precalc course.
Essays: Meh. Decent common app, but nothing particularly special.
Teacher Recommendation: One from my Honors and AP Bio teacher, who I now TA for! Haven’t read, but I’m sure is stellar. Another from my Stats teacher, who doesn’t know me as well, but is a great writer – no idea how this one is.
Counselor Rec: Meh. Didn’t know the counselor, positive that it was cookie cutter.
Additional Rec: Yearbook advisor, and the only letter that I got to read. Nothing really stood out, but it was filled with a loooot of praise. Showed that she really respected me and my work ethic.
Interview: Didn’t take one.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Nope
Intended Major: Biology
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, Large, graduating class of 450
Ethnicity: Asian American
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 250k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’m bland

Reflection
Sort of predicted I’d be accepted (I hope I’m not being too cocky), but really didn’t expect to receive as much money as I did. 28k a year is very nice!

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Not exactly a hook, but I made sure that a lot of my application focused on responsibility and independence, my defining traits. Wrote my common app essay on it, had letters written about both my leadership ability and work ethic, and showed the evidence in my ECs. Didn’t focus too much on academic ability because I felt that my stats spoke for themselves.
Weaknesses: I hate to say it, but…income bracket, ethnicity, and location. Lack of long term volunteer commitments.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My stats made me a competitive applicant, and my letters probably pushed me over the edge. Mediocre essay, but it wasn’t poor enough to get me rejected.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Michigan State, with quite a few scholarships/grants/offers, or whatever else you wanna call it. Waiting on UChicago EA
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Again, I’m bland. I’m sure being yearbook editor helped, but it’s certainly not unique.

Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Low enough for substantial aid
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Zip zero none

Reflection

Strengths: EC’s, essay, SAT IIs, upward trend
Weaknesses: Not most rigorous course load except senior year (1 AP through junior year and 6 senior year), only average SAT and GPA, counselor rec, no major awards, no hooks
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably my course rigor through junior year. NEU probably deferred me to see how I would do this year with 6 APs.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to BC. Still waiting EA for Gtown, Villanova, and SUNY Binghamton and RD for Bentley, NYU, and GW.

General comments:
This was my first college decision so I was disappointed to see I got deferred but it really wasn’t at the top of my list so my mood changed drastically about an hour later when I got accepted to Boston College. Will hope for better luck in the RD round but I know I’ll have a great option in BC either way.

Reflection

Strengths: test scores and essay
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: tried to market myself as a specialist in law/poli sci (mock trial, taking related classes, etc.)
Weaknesses: gpa maybe? and class rank, but my school is super competitive
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: pretty sure my score put me over the top, and the fact that i applied to what is most likely a pretty small/specialized major that i was qualified in!
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: no word yet – waiting on georgetown EA decision, rest are RD
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: i would say the “specialization” i tried to create for myself, but i’m really not sure!! super excited though

good luck, everyone! neu is an amazing place.

Reflection

Strengths: My essay really reflected something that not a lot of high schoolers normally do. Hopefully triggered their emotions.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself:

Weaknesses: I feel like I didn’t have enough science hooks?
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: essay and a lot of luck
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: accepted to other pharmacy program schools, including rutgers and buffalo.
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Rather than getting involved in various activities, I really focused on a few (women’s rights, culture, a hint of science). Maybe they saw me doing something similar in NEU?
