Official Northwestern class of 2017 RD thread

^ Haha!!

@NorthwesternDad - Great!! How is it there? And how would he rate Evanston as a city for college students(I have heard its great - but just another first hand opinion!)??

I applied to 9 other schools, including 2 Ivies, 1 state-school back up, and many small liberal arts schools.

@Sam Lee - it is obvious… All my friends say I am smarter, while all my S’s friends say he is way smarter…guess it is the generational and cultural gap :wink: S of course thinks…he is far ahead of the game!

@Rishav17 - NU is amazing in all respects sans the weather and food (am sure many folks consider NU’s dining halls to be quite good…but S is not exactly thrilled with his choices; he is a vegetarian). He is sufficiently challenged with respect to academics considering the rigors of ISP more than Engg. He is considering doing research in Engg this year and is quite excited about it. He is also into sports and plays for his residential college. He had admissions to some really top notch schools and he chose NU over the rest and is more than happy with his choice.

@Rishav17 - When ever S gets a break, he goes to Chicago with his friends. Evanston ias such is pretty nice with tons of places to dine, shop etc. But S prefers to go to Chicago, if he finds the time.

Do you guys know when we find out? April 1?

^ Late march i guess,that’s when last year’s results came out!!

@NorthwesternDad - Thanks for the input!! :slight_smile:
I don’t think I’ll have a problem with the food - I can eat anything & everything on Earth!! Your S seems to be doing pretty much what I want to do - Engg, research & sports!! Anything in particular that made your S choose NU over the other great schools?

For those International students concerned that Northwestern may lack international reputation, an article last year in the NY Times reporting research done with hundreds of the world’s top CEO’s ranked NU #6 worldwide among the schools where they prefer to recruit – ranked after only Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cambridge and Columbia – so I’m fairly sure you don’t need to worry about reputation.

<a href=“Education - Image - NYTimes.com”>Education - Image - NYTimes.com;

S has an acceptance at UCL and will likely choose NU over UCL if he’s lucky enough to get an offer.

In addition to a S applying to NU this year we also have a D who is currently an NU Sophomore, and we all agree that Evanston is a fantastic college town. D loves absolutely everything about NU and is very glad she made it her top choice!

@MomCares - I’m sure your S will join your D!! :slight_smile:
And what I was talking about earlier is that among the international applicants, Northwestern is not that well known, despite its awesomeness!! Here, in India, other than the Ivies, MIT & Stanford (which are known to all), the only other colleges people are aware of are the likes of UIUC, GeorgiaTech, Purdue, NYU and the UCs. I feel this ‘may’ be a result of NU’s lack of , lets say, advertisement? Internationally. The problem is, while the Ivies are renowned worldwide, the other colleges that I mentioned either have a huge no. of admits and hence people get to know about it through “contacts” or they have some kind of admissions programs/etc. Northwestern falls in between. It is a highly reputed & selective school. However, it is not an Ivy and because of the lesser no. of admits - people rarely hear about how GREAT a school it is!!

Anyway, I have no doubt that employers around the world are unaware about NU’s reputation!!

Our kids figure the reputation among employers is far more important than the reputation among their peers. Some of D’s high school friends initially confused Northwestern University with a local (and very UNimpressive) school with a similar name, which really bothered D until she realized that all of the people who matter to her professionally are very aware of NUs awesome reputation. In fact most people “in the know” would choose NU over at least several Ivy’s depending on the specific program they’re interested in, and for several programs NU is chosen over all other schools in the world.

Even here on the left coast, the reach of NUs reputation is gaining ground very quickly.

^ I agree, that is what matters the most!!
What I’m trying to say is, people, in general(who are not really involved in college admissions/recruiting/ teaching), tend to underestimate Northwestern’s brilliance!!

In the end, I am happy that I found out about Northwestern!! :)

Can anyone answer this - The only interview contact, here in India, is in Mumbai - which is quite far from where I live. Is it a good idea to write a mail and ask for a skype/telephonic interview or should I stop worrying because the interviews are only informational and optional??

@Rishav17- I am in complete agreement with MomCares. S visited all the colleges that he was considering but I could sense/see a distinct glow and enthusiasm as we walked along the NU’s campus and attended the various information sessions. This is the place where he asked quite a number of relevant questions, so I knew his decision. This, coupled with the fact that NU was the farthest that he got into (as far away from home as possible!) solidified his choice.

does NU have an application status check??? im freakin out right now omg. all the other 19 schools that i applied (stupid common app limit) either have a status check thing or say they will get it soon. also is NU really difficult for intl students? i heard the acceptance rate goes down for OOS students in some unis like uva and unc

The email S received after applying says “If we are missing any items necessary to complete your application, we will notify you via e-mail in early February.” This is consistent with what I remember from when our D applied a couple years ago.

Yes, I assume NU acceptance is “really difficult” for International students, much as it is for US students. From a purely empirical standpoint, we know far more extremely qualified students who have been denied admission than who have been admitted, which is consistent with their admissions statistics. We know several students admitted to Ivies who were rejected by NU. S has near-perfect stats, but we in no way take it for granted that he’ll be admitted. So it goes with any extremely selective university.

Good luck to all. Hope to see you on the beautiful NU beaches next fall!

@NorthwesternDad & @MomCares – Thankyou Both!!
Just why I love CC!! :)

Hopefully my app makes a good impression on the admissions officers!!

This.

ok how do u quote messages on here?

@rishav17 - By the way, while interviews are not critical for acceptance, I bet it couldn’t hurt if you email admission to ask if there’s any way to set up a Skype interview. If nothing else, it would demonstrate your high level of interest in NU, which is never a bad thing.
