I actually had a few questions for you Northwesterndad…what had you studied when you were in college?

Math and Computer Science - IIT Bombay

I heard the iit acceptance rates are crazy! Something like 3,000 out of 100000 get in! Wow

True…it is based on a joint entrance test ( all multiple choice) that is held all over India on the same day, and time…the papers consist of Math, Physics, Chemistry…almost all involve problem solving.

Makes the SAT seem useless

SAT is not the determining factor for admissions here. While in India, admissions to IITs are solely based on this joint entrance exam. It is a make or break scenario, where students typically prepare for this grueling test over a period of one year or more. On the other hand, there is no need for any essay submissions, extra curricular activities, and what not!

@Northwesterndad - Well, nowadays IIT prep begins right in class 9 !! Haha!!
Hopefully I get to shine at Northwestern! :)

@lukelev - It’s somewhere around 3.5 lakh applicants!! :)

Out of that 20,000 are ranked after the exam, the rest are left out.
Of these 20,000 ranks - the first 3000 are the most useful ones cause then you get your major of preference and your IIT of preference!!
After 3000, upto ~8000 you’ll probably get into an IIT, but these are the less renowned IITs & not the best majors available.
Ranks 8000 to 20000 are like a waitlist!!

The waiting is excruciating, isn’t it? I wish I could just go to sleep for 6 weeks.

Nah, If I’d go to sleep for 6 weeks - I’d fail my 12th board(final) exam - and then even an acceptance(highly unlikely) from Northwestern would be useless!! :p

But yeah, the WAIT!! :/

Man, I remember waiting for college acceptances.

Does Northwestern send out likely letters? even to pple who aren’t females in engineering?

NU does not send likely letters.

@NorthwesternDad - However insignificant it might be, do you think universities(Northwestern) in particular keep track of our communication with them??

Cause I recently sent a mail and I got a “Thank you (my name) for your continued interest”… :p

what exactly did u do rishav? ima try this wid all my reaches…

@rishav17, our experience is that they do keep track of such communication…in any case, it doesn’t hurt to send emails.

@JRswish: - Well I first sent them a request for telephonic interview as they don’t have an alumnus in my city. Then e-mailed my regional admissions rep(whose email id I got after the 1st mail) with some questions regarding NU. Then I asked if I could submit addl. material now… :D

@NorthwesternDad - Hmm… Hopefully they notice it before they dump my application for the lack of aid!! :p

Thanks for that tip, NWdad.

So April 1?

^ It seems it will come out before that!! :)

So 32 days to March 28th!! :p
