****OFFICIAL Notre Dame Class of 2021 REA Decisions Thread****

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
ACT (breakdown): 34C (35S, 35E, 34M, 33R)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2nd of 412 students
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP US Gov (3) AP Physics 1 (5)
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus, AP German, AP Macro, College English, Business Management 2, Sociology, Internship
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): 7th at International DECA as a sophomore and a junior, best test in my area at International DECA as a junior, state champion in DECA and WAC.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
DECA (State President) - lots of leadership and winning, I LOVE DECA. I talked about it (in some way or shape) in every single essay.
WAC (Wyoming Academic Challenge) - lots of winning, got selected to represent WY against Montana. I like this too, but didn’t talk much about it.
Job/Work Experience:
Intern for my high school marketing/management program, usually given to the best DECA student in my school.
Volunteer/Community service:
Local angel tree for wounded vets - this was the focus of one of my essays, both my parents are Navy vets so veterans’ affairs mean a lot to me.
Blessings in a Backpack - I think this is nationwide, but our local chapter has been working doubletime with the local recession.
Peanut Butter Drive - Collect peanut butter for local women’s shelter, this sounds kinda dumb but young mothers and their babies need a lot of protein to be healthy.
Summer Activities:
Nothing reported on my Common App, but I did a few political campaigns and worked at a local restaurant
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App - I’ve written worse, sort of a fringe topic. 6/10. Why Notre Dame - my best one. I tied an anecdote of touring campus to DECA leadership stuff. 8.5/10. Civil Rights - pretty powerful. Talked about being poor growing up and how I want to use my finance education to advise people in the position that I was once in. 7/10. Home - talked about how being a quadruple legacy from the armed forces has opened my eyes to the needs that disabled vets have and why I do the local Angel Tree. 7.5/10.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: This was killer. My Physics teacher from last year, he talked about how I was his first student to self-study the AP test from the normal class, and how he admired my leadership and kindness. I almost cried reading it. 10/10.
Counselor Rec: A couple grammar errors and she didn’t know me well but it was about as good as I could ask for. I go to guidance once a year haha. 4/10.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yee
Intended Major: Finance and Marketing
State (if domestic applicant): WY
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Largest public school in WY
Ethnicity: White and Mexican, only reported white on my application
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: sub $50,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): being from WY

Reflection

Strengths: ACT, DECA stuff
Weaknesses: not taking an AP class until senior year
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I talked a lot about community service and business, this is Mendoza’s bread and butter and that’s why I wanna go there. I think they knew that I understood the mission of Catholicism even tho I’m not super religious – though that may change.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Michigan State, Minnesota, U of WY. Waiting on GA Tech, Michigan, and Penn, Harvard, and Yale in the regular round.

General Comments:
Grateful for a spot in the class of 2021! I am still shaking as I write this, this is the sign of an inter-generational accomplishment in my family. My mom is incredibly emotional. To anyone who didn’t get in – God has a plan! Wherever you end up, you are bound to do great things. To quote Rev. Hesburgh, “surrender to excellence on all fronts.” GO IRISH!

Why I think I got in: I have been to Notre Dame twice and both time just fell in love with it. I did the Day Visit this past fall and attended classes and spent the day with another Mendoza student, and I wrote about it in my essays. The school is just the right fit for me, it is in my heart and came out in my essays. I am so grateful because my public high school doesn’t do well at schools like Notre Dame. Go Irish!!!

Also had two SAT Subject tests, Math I 780 and Math II 790.

@collegemomjam Congratulations! Just curious if ND is definitely your “first love”. You have been very active on forums for the other schools. Do you think you will choose ND even if you get admitted to the other schools you have applied to?

Maybe your GPA and test scores had a lot to do with it as well. Congratulations!!

Why did you not even bother applying for FA?

General Comments: Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted!! To those who weren’t, I am sure that you will end up at an amazing school that is a great fit for you  always remember that God has a plan for us all

@3daysuntilEA I know you were asking @collegemomjam but for what it’s worth, I personally didn’t apply for FA because I know my parent’s income is way too big to even be considered for FA, and I didn’t want to waste my time or anyone else’s time. (Plus I didn’t want to divert funds from someone who needs the aid more than I do; I’m fortunate enough that money is not an issue in deciding which college to attend, but I know for many people money is a huge factor.)

Weaknesses: Trash GPA from first 2 years, Never did official visit, No religious boosts

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted Direct Admit to IU Kelley School of Business

General Comments: I was never super serious about ND. After getting my IU Kelley Direct Admission back in October I had decided that I was not going to ND regardless of my decision, since IU has been my #1 forever. Definitely could have tried harder to market myself and get into ND, but this was just a stretch because why not. Congrats to everyone who did get in!

Answering for S2 since I hang out on Parents Forum and he is not on here. I am sitting here typing this and his mom still has not heard the news yet.

Anyone know when the Financial Aid stuff comes? Son is fairly calm, I am over the-moon thrilled and ready to put down the deposit but need $ amounts.

For those denied, my heart goes out, and I hope you find your own great place.

@GraceDad Notre Dame is tied with another school for first for my daughter, with a very close second that was a little bit more of a safer choice for her (third school). Already planning to go to Notre Dame’s Admitted Students Day! Like you, I see a lot of the same posters on multiple threads. She purposely didn’t apply anywhere ED because these have been her top schools ever since she started building her college list. I’m curious, what’s your interest in the other schools? Do you have any one applying to the other schools’ threads you’ve been reading?

Decision: Deferred

Ah well, praying for luck in the RD pool.

SAT: 1500, GPA(uw): 3.8

Decision: Rejected

SAT I: 1480, 770 CW 710 M
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0 UW 4.5 W
Rank: 12/470
AP: AP World (5) APUSH (5) AP Lang (5)
Senior Year Course Load: 5 APs, 1 art elective (in a career oriented pathway)
Major Awards: AP Scholar

Extracurricular: Class of 2017 treasurer, Key Club historian, Career Technical Education ambassador, Varsity tennis (CIF individual qualifier), track and field
Job/Work Experience: Dairy Queen, tutor
Volunteer/Community service: Key Club, hospital “candystriper”, freshman orientation leader, church leader
Summer Activities: work, photography
Essays (rating 1-10, details): common app personal essay and one supplement were judged to be phenomenal by an AP English teacher. Another supplement was good but less personal. Last supplement is my regret - I wrote it and never had anyone read it because I was too eager to submit. My overconfidence in other areas of the application, as well as my writing ability, caused me to brush aside this final essay as unimportant. Knowing now that I was rejected, I can’t help but wonder if this mistake cost me my admission.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: good
Counselor Rec: very close relationship, I assume it was very good
Additional Rec: youth minister at my church, we are very close and she was my Confirmation sponsor so I am confident it was great.

State (if domestic applicant): California (Southern)
School Type: medium public
Ethnicity: white
Gender: female
Income Bracket: upper middle class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection

Strengths: well rounded extracurriculars, good SAT score and writing, top notch grades and AP scores
Weaknesses: lack of effort on supplements, no legacy
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: supplements
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Have not heard from anywhere else yet but I have applied to UCLA, UCSD, SLU, and Boston University so far.

I visited Notre Dame and fell in love with the atmosphere and the enthusiasm of all the people I met there. The opportunity to attend a well regarded school in the academic world as well as grow in my Catholic faith was exciting to me, and I wish I had worked harder on my application to reflect that excitement. I did not realize how invested I was in ND until I was rejected; I know how egotistical this sounds, but I truly thought I was a stellar candidate who would be accepted wherever I chose to apply. Congratulations to everyone who got in, don’t take this for granted! To all those who haven’t submitted - put in your best effort on the supplements!

Accepted! 1550 SAT and solid extracurriculars. Does anyone know of a Groupme or similar platform for Notre Dame class of 2021? I would love to join!
