What excites you about the University of Notre Dame that makes it stand out from other institutions? 9; Tradition; Golden Dome exemplifies tradition & Catholicism in it.

The University of Notre Dame is a Holy Cross institution whose educational philosophy has been formed around five core principles inspired by Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C., the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross. These principles, or pillars, of a Holy Cross education are Mind, Heart, Zeal, Family, and Hope, and they continue to shape our students today. Which pillar or pillars resonate most with you? Why?
7; Heart, passion is essential to being truly human & getting the most out of life. Jesus had it, and Catholics and UND students try to replicate it.

What is one thing that you know for a fact? Why are you certain?
8; Partisanship is the cause of American division; people must start by getting rid of judgement in their own lives in order to fix the problems in Washington and nation at large.

Common App Essay (I used my own prompt):
What sets you apart from your peers? How did you develop this?
6; My unique drive and tenacity to live in the moment and take advantage of what each one offers.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: My Algebra II, Pre-Calc, and Calc AB teacher; 8; Emphasized my unique academic abilities & pursuits

Reflection

Strengths: Standardized tests & ECs
Weaknesses: Essays
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really thought I was going to be waitlisted, so I am really not sure what to say. My SAT was above the 75th percentile, and my ACT was high-mid-range, and I think that was a big factor. I thought that my essays and academic rigor were very average considering the all of the applicants to UND. Finally, I had absolutely no legacy or involvement with UND whatsoever. My mother was rejected when she applied.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to all I applied to: Michigan Tech, Northern, Central, Western Michigan(s), Michigan State. Still waiting on University of Michigan decision.

State (if domestic applicant): Virginia
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Hispanic, Puerto Rican
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Upper-middle/upper
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM (Hispanic), not a legacy but grandfather and uncle went there

Reflection
I think my lower test scores probably hurt me, but I didn’t get denied so that’s a plus.
Strengths: Essays, recs, decent hooks, minority status
Weaknesses: SAT score, income bracket (?)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My scores weren’t high enough to compete w/ rest of REA students, but hopefully I’m otherwise decent.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: No where yet. UVA decisions come mid-January

General Comments:
Hopefully, there is hope! Unless Notre Dame uses waitlisting as a way to gently let down students with family ties… but it is rarer for them than at other schools.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App - 6
I did my own prompt; What sets you apart from others? How does it make you unique?
My ability to be ready and take advantage of every moment and be successful in each one.

I made all of the supplemental essays exactly 175 words; I’m not sure if that had any bearing.

What excites you about the University of Notre Dame that makes it stand out from other institutions?
8; Tradition & Catholicism

The University of Notre Dame is a Holy Cross institution whose educational philosophy has been formed around five core principles inspired by Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C., the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross. These principles, or pillars, of a Holy Cross education are Mind, Heart, Zeal, Family, and Hope, and they continue to shape our students today. Which pillar or pillars resonate most with you? Why?
7; Heart; Jesus had it, we, as Catholics, should work to have it in our lives as well; passion is essential part of humanity.

What is one thing that you know for a fact? Why are you certain?
9; Partisanship in Congress has caused governmental problems in America and has seeped into daily life for all citizens; it seems as though it will continue to decline, but if people can come together and compromise without judgement, we can work toward a better future.

Reflection

Strengths: Standardized tests & ECs
Weaknesses: CA Essay, just wasn’t that “great”
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I actually was pretty certain I was going to be deferred, so I don’t really know what to say. My scores were around the 75th percentile for last year, and my essays and LORs were not exceptional either. One possible explanation is that, as far as I know, no one from my area (UP of MI) has attended in a long time.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have been accepted by Michigan State, Michigan Tech, and Northern, Central, and Western Michigan. I am still waiting on a decision from the University of Michigan.

General Comments: I was so shocked and happy that I got accepted!! I’ll be praying for all of you, regardless of decisions. Best of luck to all!!

Decision: ACCEPTED!!

Job/Work Experience: Interned at a D.C. based non-profit that focused on scientific research and condensing that information into easily digestible videos published to try and enact legislative change focused around the opioid crisis. I’m also a lifeguard at a very large city pool which is really difficult and high-stress (i.e. rescue tubes on at all times, ready to jump in)

Summer Activities: My internship at the non-profit and lifeguarding
Essays (rating 1-10, details): I’d say 8–I stuck to the 175 limit. My great grandfather was on Knute Rockne’s football team (p big) and was part of the 4 Horsemen (big football) so I was able to work that in to the why notre dame one and thought that was interesting for admissions officers to read.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 9: AP Lang teacher from 11th grade, knew her very well and had a great dialogue with her at all times, connected really well. Also had biology teacher who doesn’t usually write recs write one so that might have been good.

Teacher Rec #1: see above
Teacher Rec #2: see above
Counselor Rec: Definitely generic. I think each counselor has 100+ kids to write a rec for and they’re always so busy. Due to circumstances out of my control I’ve had a different counselor each year of high school so I didn’t expect much haha.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): definitely music. Emphasized music in common app essay and arranged extracurriculars so that music is first. I also submitted music supplements (you don’t have to apply to a School of Music here), and ended up getting a personal email from the Dean of the Music Department so definitely my advice is to submit everything you can.

Reflection

Strengths: Music, scores, well-rounded app (varsity athlete, academics)
Weaknesses: Probably counselor recs. Not Catholic. Bombed subject tests haha
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Definitely the music helped boost me, got pretty lucky with the SATs so yeah. GPA not bad either. I think I’m well-rounded but not stretched to thin. I have commendable achievements in everything imo.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Got a full tuition to U Pitt and am chancellor scholarship finalist, but I haven’t heard anything from anywhere else. Also to Alabama lol but I don’t think I’d consider going unless I got a full-ride and they personally want me really bad. We’ll see.

General Comments: After I got the email from the Dean of Music Department I was kind of expecting acceptance but it’s nice to finally know for sure! Yayyy!
