Now that everyone has sent in their commitments to Notre Dame, and the waitlist news will start pouring in soon, for the sake of consolidation, post all waitlist news, questions, etc. here and only here.

I’ll start off by saying what I know about the Notre Dame Waitlist. As it said in the letters we recieved, it is not ranked and estimated to be about 900 people long, though if anyone has a more accurate number, that would be appreciated. They start to make calls regarding acceptance within two weeks of May 1 (perhaps May 2 this year given the Sunday scenario). Therefore, we should expect to start hearing about May 16. Last year, calls started coming on a Wednesday, most were made on Thursday, and a few more came on Friday. They do not call on weekends. If the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday thing is more important that the two week time frame, then calls will likely begin on the 18th of May. Only calls are made as far as I know. If you get a call, you are accepted. As we all know by now, little Notre Dame envelope is not good news. Last year (according to the CC thread), calls started on May 14 and went all the way to June 7. They came in groups which got steadily smaller. Fifteen or so people who posted on the thread got in, which I would personally estimate that about 75 or so waitlisters were admitted overall. Again, if anyone has an accurate number, that would be awesome. Most people who were regular posters on the thread got in, which may be a good omen for those of us that share news here. Acceptance is still need-blind at the waitlist level (one person admitted from the waitlist last year got his entire tuition covered with grants and work-study). Financial aid packages are overnighted and arrive one to two days after the call, though one was recieved on the same day. Admissions counselors seemed to be very helpful (though vague as would be expected) when asked questions by waitlisters last year. That’s about all I know. By the way, I’m from Northern California, just in case people would like to know. My counselor is Eileen Zander. So, anyways, ask questions, call admissions officers and tell us what they said, post if you were lucky enough to be accepted so we can congratulate you and ask that great question: “What did you do?”

My admissions counselor (New England area) said we could hear anywhere from early May right through the middle of June…and they may not even need to go to the waitlist. There have been years (2 years ago i think was the most recent) where they did not use the waitlist at all. It’s all very vague.

Both two years ago and last year they did two rounds off the waitlist (of about 50 kids each, so 100 total). My year (two years ago) first round was called May 7th and second was called May 22nd. I believe last year the first was pulled around May 14th and the second was pulled late May/early June before they mailed the small envelope saying they were finished with the waitlist.

And as far as Toast8152’s number is concerned, Notre Dame released earlier this year that there were 1700 kids accepted to the waitlist. However many decided to stay on, however, I am unsure of.

The number of people offered a place on the waitlist. Maybe 900 is the number actually accepting that place, given that the wording was “estimated to be about 900 people long.” Having 50% of people accepting a place (comparable to ND’s general yield) is reasonable.

Good luck to all on the waitlist.

BillyMc is right about the number offerred. In the letter the estimate was that about 900 would remain on the waitlist, but if anyone has a better and more accurate number that might be helpful.

YEAAAAAA! Here we go waitlist!!
Goood luckk to everyone on it! I am hoping that we get calls sooner rather than later because I want to know where I am going to college next year as do all of you I’m sure!!

If anyone finds out if they are going to the waitlist and how many if so, please tell us. We are all curious. I imagine they’d have an idea within a couple days or so before they start reviewing the applications.

I got an email from my counselof. I was asking whether I should send in my standardized test scores. She told me not to worry about them because they would not be a determining factor in waitlist admission. I hope this is a positive in that interest is more important that our actual stats and that they are not yet ruling out the waitlist.

Everything that I have heard says its based on interest and demographics…bc it is an unranked waitlist, soo if you think about it we are all on an equal playing level and our academic qualifications are no long pertinent to this process … did you ask your counselor how many spots they have left? or when they will begin calling?

I just talked to my counselor and she said that they are looking very strong in terms of confirms and may not even have to go to the waitlist but that they will have a better idea in a few weeks. Yikes! This just ruined my day.

i just emailed my counselor and he said they still didn’t have a solid number yet. i think they are pretty tight lipped about this kind of stuff anyways. unless anyone has heard anything different?

I don’t want to ask my counselor that question because they seem to have a “go-to” answer set for it: We will be taking only a small neumber off the waitlist if we even go to the waitlist at all. I don’t want to give false hope to annek or ndwanabe, but they said the same thing last year before they admitted about 100 from the waitlist. They probably said it the year before when they took 250. It doesn’t worry me that much that they say they might not go to the waitlist and they will only take a handful if they do because I think it is their precautionary answer.

I reaallllllyyyy hope you’re right toast!! I am just really hesitant to get my hopes up at this point but the wait is driving me nuts!

I found the links for the waitlist threads from 2010 and 2008. Not sure if there was one for 2009. Perhaps that was the year they didn’t take anyone, thus no thread. If anyone finds it though, that might be nice. I think 2008 must have been the year they took 250 because they seemed to know pretty quickly that they’d be going to the waitlist. Anyways, here they are:

(2010)http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-notre-dame/921432-official-university-notre-dame-waitlist-news-thread.html?highlight=waitlist

(2008) http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-notre-dame/504167-waitlist.html?highlight=waitlist

Thanks for those links! Ok so it looks like they pretty regularly tell people that they won’t be taking people off the waitlist, and it can basically go either way…so back to square one?

2009 thread (my year): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-notre-dame/707447-will-nd-go-their-waitlist.html
I was accepted off of the waitlist the second round (May 22), and the first round came about May 7th. They accepted 100 total (50 each round).

From my understanding, they generally take a handful each and every year (I know they took some the past three, and I’ve heard people get off each of the two years prior to that). My year they also told us they probably wouldn’t turn to the waitlist because they had a high confirmation yield, and yet they wound up pulling 100. That being said, nothing is definite, as I don’t think they’d see it necessary if they somehow wind up with an absurdly high acceptance yield. Basically, they’ll try their best to turn to the waitlist because they know how badly most of you guys want to get in, and they usually do, even if it’s just for a few spots. Best of luck to everyone!

I think that they also do a lot of research on yield to ensure as best as they can that they don’t overenroll. Since ND requires freshmen to live on campus, this would be a big problem. I think they intend to underenroll and go to the waiting list because they want to have control over the final size of the incoming freshman class.
