    [
] Weaknesses: No strong weaknesses besides lack of interview, SATs can always be better if anything. Also, every diversity statistic was stacked against me (haha)
[] Why you think you were accepted: see strengths^; as far as I can tell, I did everything right when I applied, with maintaining grades, staying on top of supplements that hopefully highlighted my fit, submitting a music app to show off my talent and prove that I’m committed to contributing to their program, and whatever else there can be done to shout to a college that you really want to go there, and think it’s a great fit for you.
    [
] Where else were you accepted: So far, accepted into WashU, Colgate, and Reed, waitlisted from Middlebury.

**General Comments: ** Incredibly excited to be accepted into Pomona’s class of 2021!!! Currently waiting on decisions from a bunch of other schools, but Pomona is right at the top of my list, so unless I get into Yale it looks like I’m heading to California. Congratulations to all of my future classmates, and can’t wait to become a Sagehen!

  • [] Extracurriculars: French Club (member 3 years), Korean Club (member 3 years), Journalism (Opinion Editor 2 years), Mentor (2 years), Key Club (member 2 years), Community Band (member 2 years), drum student (7 years).

    [
] Summer Activities: None (visited my dad in Germany).
[] Essays: Unique and interesting. Spent tons of time on them, and I had my AP English Literature teacher look over them for me. Main Essay: 8/10 // Supplemental Essays: 9/10
    [
] Teacher Recommendation: Recommendations from my AP Government & Politics and AP English Language teachers. I exemplified growth in their classes and was friends with them, so their recommendations were most likely excellent (was debarred from reading them).
[] Counselor Rec: We have gotten to know each other well. Recommendation was most likely great.
    [
] Additional Rec: None (wish I had).
[] Interview: Alumnus Interview in Ohio.
    [
] Supplementary Material (portfolio, etc.): None (wish I had).

Other

  • [] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes. Financial Aid package I am receiving is extremely generous. Applicants should not be afraid to ask for Financial Aid.
    [
] State (if domestic applicant): Ohio
[] Country (if international applicant): US
    [
    ] School Type: Public
    [] Ethnicity: White
    [
    ] Gender: Male
    [] Income Bracket: <$100,000
    [
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): No conventional hook (Possible hook: Dad living in Germany).

Reflection

  • [] Strengths: In order of strength: Grades, Essays, Interviews, Recommendations, Senior Course Load.
    [
] Weaknesses: SAT I scores and not taking SAT II. An additional recommendation and a music portfolio would have helped.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I demonstrated extraordinary interest in Pomona. I sent them my AP scores during my junior year (before I had even applied). I researched Pomona a ton through their website, and I even read The Student Life to show that I was knowledgeable about the College. I did an alumnus interview in Ohio (50 minutes; went acceptably well), and when my regional admissions counselor visited from California, I met him (70 minutes; went well). I wrote thank you emails after every conversation to let them know how much meeting them meant to me. Then I was deferred. I sent my regional admissions counselor an email in which I stated that Pomona was still my first choice. Emails were professional.

My dad’s living in Germany most likely set me apart from other students as well.
    [
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Rejected: University of Chicago (deferred, then rejected)
Waiting for: University of Southern California, Columbia University
    Accepted: Occidental College, Boston University

**General Comments: ** I feel unbelievably fortunate to have been accepted. I’ve wanted to attend Pomona since 10th grade, and I have never been able to envision myself going anywhere else. Pomona was the only application into which I truly put effort, and it paid off. My acceptance exemplifies that deferral is not rejection; it CAN be overcome. Show Pomona that you want them. Show Pomona what you can do for them. Work hard, reach out to them as much as possible (without being a burden), and be courteous. It doesn’t matter if you get deferred or waitlisted; you’re still in the game, and that’s ALL that matters!
Congratulations to those accepted into the Class of 2021!

@Untold

hey there, its a bit late, but on Pomona’s website it said that they don’t track demonstrated interest. Do you think it was more of your connections to your regional counselor?
