Applied through: Early Decision 1
Hooks: Sent a science research supplement through Slideroom with an evaluation from the grad student I worked with, being gay may have helped with diversity…

Location
State: CA
School Type: Large Public School (a little less than 2000 kids)
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male

General Comments/Reflections/etc.: I feel like I should’ve focused more on my passion in Spanish. They requested my quarter grades, and my quarter grades included my attendance (which was pretty poor). I’m an Asian male who wants to be a doctor, so I’m totally breaking the mold and flouting society’s stereotypes.

pomona must be out of their mind…so sorry for you and I’m sure good things will come for your other schools

Decision: Rejected
Program: Early Decision 1

Interview: Had a good and fun conversation about all kinds of things. I don’t really know what to say.

Location-
State: CA
School Type: Public School
Ethnicity: Asian/White
Gender: Male

General Comments/Reflections/etc.: It’s hard to say what I could have done better to get in (more extracurriculars, tried harder to not get that B in AP Bio/Algebra 2-Trig), but all in all, I don’t regret any of my choices. I probably should have explained more the impact of the activities I did, but it absolutely killed me to spend so many words on a brag-fest and those weird topics above are what I have to show. Oh well.

Plus side: At least I don’t have to deal with people telling me that I’m totally able to get in to Pomona (like my dad 2 hours ago) in an attempt to make me feel better. Now the joke’s on them! Right? Right?

Teacher Recs: Both were good from teachers that know me really well (had them both for 2 years in honors/accelerated/AP classes and TAing for one of them) although one of them spelled my name wrong which was weird

Teacher Recs: Submitted two, but wasn’t allowed to read them. The teachers liked me, but I certainly wasn’t their favorite ever or anything.
Counselor Rec: Who knows, I’m in a large public school and most counselors are incompetent

Interview: Killed it, the kid really got me

Location
State: CT
School Type: Large Public School
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male

General Comments/Reflections/etc.: I honestly don’t know. I was recruited to run and felt I was qualified without any sort of help. The only major flaw to my application that I can think of is my GPA, but it’s so damn hard to balance all-state level athletics, a job, Boy Scouts, and school work and still get the absolute best grades. Sorry if I sound super whiney, but I’m just really disappointed.

Essays: I thought they reflected everything about myself that I felt represented a Pomona student. Common App essay- I try to set myself up for constructive failure, risk taking, etc outside of school (provided examples), and now at Pomona I want to push myself to fail in the classroom. Supplement Essay-critical inquiry, a class focused on the development of our brains vs. the development of current technology. Other essays- explained my coming to terms with diversity work as someone who is white and privileged, and also my rationale behind refusing tutors and taking hard classes for the sake of curiosity and excitement.
Teacher Recs: 3 teacher recs, but they all represented a different part of me. Didn’t read them, but I’m sure they were very accurate and helpful.
Counselor Rec: I had my counselor meet with my boss from the special needs camp, so she was able to talk about that aspect.
Hooks: probably my job? Honestly I’m not sure… I think it’s just that my application showed I was deeply interested in my passions, and I have specific plans for the future and how to use the resources at Pomona.
Interview: REALLY well. I talked a lot about my specific passions, and asked good questions. I had a senior student as an interviewer, so I was able to ask her a lot of student-specific questions. Really casual and I learned a lot.

General Comments/Reflections/etc.: I am so lucky to be a member of Pomona class of 2019!!! I honestly am shocked, because while I thought I would be a great fit at Pomona, reading some of the posts on CC had me scared that I didn’t have all the right numbers/ECs/awards to be accepted. I think this truly shows how serious admissions is about looking at the whole student, rather than just at their statistics.

General Comments/Reflections/etc.: I think transcript was my main problem, since I did have a lot of Bs in my first year’s 2nd semester, and I applied for cogsci as major despite my weakness in math and science. I love Pomona for basically its everything. I was a little disappointed when I saw the rejection but knew it was coming when I was not requested quarter grades… congratulations to the lucky Sagehens!

@FranciscoSan‌ @bedside11 @sunshinedoom‌ @alliwannadoiscry‌ @erules4‌ @jojojohuang‌ Did you all get rejected or just deferred? I know that some colleges (like Georgetown) defer all students while others defer some and reject others. What does Pomona do? You all had very promising stats–best of luck to whatever other schools you apply to! :)

Pomona refers and rejects, even for early decision
