Ethnicity: White

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: Idk, Middle I guess?

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Mother was recently unemployed, have an identical twin brother who also applied (got rejected as well)

Reflection

Strengths: Grades, Level of Sports (not just the standard one year of tennis that some people do), attitude (i don’t really fit the stereotype many outside people see at Princeton, I’m more of a jock I guess)

Weaknesses: Essay perhaps, lack of distinguished extracurriculars.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Sports have always been a big part of my life but they may have been my downfall. They take up a lot of my time and may have prevented me from doing some of the ec’s that Princeton would have liked to see. I thought that they would have been a huge plus for me but maybe they weren’t. I was a little bummed at first, but I still have a full ride to UMD so I’m still happy. If you guys have any thoughts on why I may have been rejected please share your thoughts.

DECISION: ACCEPTED

Objective:

**SAT I /B: 2330 (790 CR, 800 M, 740 W)

ACT: 35 (Don’t remember individuals, 10/12 on writing supplement)

SAT II: 700 Chem, 760 M2, 750 on the Critical Reading one (was it called English Comp?)

**Unweighted GPA/B: 4.0 (cannot exceed 4 at my school)
*** Rank/B: Valedictorian
*** AP/B: Calc AB and BC 5’s
*** IB /B:

Senior Year Course Load: Took every AP class at my small, rural school. AP’s are Calc AB, Calc BC, AP Stats, AP English, AP Chemistry, also a French Class at local Community College

**Major Awards/B: National Merit Finalist (Semi-finalist at the time), U. S. Senate Page School Highest Honors, Academic All-Conference, Youth Rotarian, Various other local awards for little things.

Subjective:

**Extracurriculars/B: Big one for me is United States Senate Page (promoted to Floor Page) in Spring of '09. Also, Young Democrats (3-year Prez and Founder), Teen Court (3-year Prez), Member of two Jazz Bands for Alto Saxophone (1st Chair), Member of Show Choir, Varsity Football (Senior Squad Lifting Captain), Varsity Wrestling, Math Team, NHS and Key Club, Church Group.

Job/Work Experience: I put U. S. Senate Page here as well, as it was a salaried job. Also was a “Young Ambassador” for my City’s Chamber of Commerce.

Volunteer/Community service: Various things, organizing for Political Campaigns, working in Nursing Homes, Tutoring, “Volunteen” at a Hospital, no real focal point to this section.

Summer Activities: Training for Athletics 3 days a week from 6-10 AM M-W-F. Hosting an exchange student from France, working as a Young Ambassador, seeing the world (I put it a different way when it was asked).

Essays: Wrote a great one about working back from crippling leg surgery in Middle School to start for my Football team as a Senior, and an average one about how important a role donuts play in recruitment to our Young Dems group

Teacher Recommendation: From Math Teacher at Senate Page School (they don’t let their students see their Recs, but they’re supposed to be fantastic), From French Teacher I had in a College Course I took.

Counselor Rec: Great

Additional Rec: From my Senator

Interview: Late in the process, over the phone, went well. Obviously a little awkward though, since it was over the phone.

Other

**State/B: Wisconsin

**Country/B:

School Type: Small, rural public

Ethnicity: White

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: No need-based Financial Aid

**Hooks /B: What is URM? Only hook is that I’m from a small town, I guess.

Reflection

Strengths: U. S. Senate Page (there are only 60 each year who work and attend school there), leadership, reasonably good scores on tests. Also, well-rounded.

Weaknesses: I don’t have a good school I’m coming from, My 2nd essay could have been better. Volunteering could have been better, but my schedule was pretty full.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
I thought I was very Well-Rounded (with Athletics and ECs) and also had good leadership roles.

*General Comments:
I applied to HYPSC, was accepted to Yale ED, Princeton, and Columbia (Legacy), and was waitlisted at Harvard and Stanford. In reply @sportsfan, I agree that the Ivies don’t put as much stock in Athletics as you would think. Simply being on a serious Varsity team takes up far more time than almost any other EC.

msauce congratulations on the acceptance. You should be very proud of yourself. I feel the same way about the ivy’s look on sports. Some people don’t realize that playing (in my case) two sports a year, every year, takes up a lot of time. For me, I basically had about 4 months out of 12 that I wasn’t playing for high school, and in that case I was either preparing for the next or working out or simply working. Its hard to have the time, much less the energy to be involved in some of the extremely large amounts of EC’s that some applicants have when you do it. But to each their own I suppose. Anyway, congrats on the acceptance and have a great time at wherever you choose to go.

ADMIT

SAT I (breakdown): 2270; 800 crit reading, 740 math, 720 grammar

ACT: N/A

SAT II: 800 bio, 780 Math IIc, 790 US History, 780 Physics, 760 Chem

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Unavailable, top 10

AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 BC, 5 APUS, 5 both english, 5, Bio

IB (place score in parenthesis):

Senior Year Course Load: AP Chem, AP Physics, AP Latin, AP Econ, Differential Equations and Linear Algebra, English

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Cum Laude, Science Prize, Latin Prize, ect

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): (Model UN) (Robotics) (Ski Team), Cross country, quizbowl, piano

Job/Work Experience: Full time during previous summer as a software developer

Volunteer/Community service: nonexistent

Summer Activities: CTY and eventually Stanford summer, then work

Essays: Thought they were spot on

Teacher Recommendation: Can only assume it was good, didn’t see them

Counselor Rec: Again assumed good

Additional Rec: STELLAR, had a close personal mentor write it

Interview: kinda so-so

Other

State (if domestic applicant): NJ

Country (if international applicant):

School Type: Elite-Private

Ethnicity: White

Gender: Male

Income Bracket: Top

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy

Reflection

Strengths: Leadership, academics, overall well-roundedness

Weaknesses: total lack of service

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably due to my high academic standing first of all, then my well-rounded extracurriculars, the admit rate of legacy students is also really high at Princeton

When you say your legacy status helped is that because you were simply the child of an alumni or did your parents/grandparents make million dollar donations to the school. I am wondering if even among the legacies some are more preferred over others?
