OFFICIAL: RD Applicants Thread to Columbia College (Class of 2014)

Living on Long Island is actually not positive. To be frank, it’s a bit of a hindrance because Columbia gets an overabundance of applications from the area. The URM status will help more than your location.

the fact that there are more students admitted from long island compared to the whole of canada is a plus in my opinion…unless the columbia admissions office thinks that there are more qualified students living on long island than in canada…

I’m not completely sure, but if there are more applicants as a whole from Long Island and thus a lower acceptance rate due to a larger sample size, that could bring down the OPs chances… just sayin’

Being from Long Island might hurt you a bit, but then again it would mean that Columbia is pretty familiar with your school and that definitely helps. What kelloggss probably meant, though, was that it was better being from Long Island than being international, and I would agree with that.

Columbia has rejected everyone who applied from my Long Island school in the last 20 years. But then again, that probably means they were familiar with my school’s quality, 'cuz it’s not that good.

Kelloggss is correct in surmising that international status does make it considerably more difficult. However, if about 30 applications yearly (times 20 makes it 600) are rejected from one school, it’s not that much easier to get in from Long Island (at least not where I live).

Columbia only accepted 3 people from my school last year. My school is pretty wierd. the valedictorian has an SAT in the low 2000’s but has a 106 average. The highest SAT from my school is probably my friend with a 2190. grade inflation is definitely present.

Quick question. How much will being indian and having an SAT below 2300 hurt me?

^-_________- Really, now?

I think the real thing you should look at are your ECs, your class rank, your writing ability, and your ability to give Columbia a compelling reason to admit you. That’s what should be on your mind, not the effects “being indian and having an SAT below 2300.” After all, in the end, if they do reject you (and let’s remember the Ivies are a crap shoot) it won’t only be because of those two factors, so focus on the rest.

Does Columbia have a high percentage of students from Cali?

What about Arizona? I only know of 2 other people who applied. Our valedictorian at my school and a counselor I had at a leadership camp (she’s a senior).

Arizona is a big state. I’m sure there are plenty of people who applied.
And as for California, I am pretty sure that it is one of the most populated states that make up Columbia.

Hi, this is my first ever CC post (naturally goes to my first college choice).
I’m an Asian female from northern California from a mediocre public high school. For my school and region, my stats are relatively high. In this forum and for Columbia, my stats are very average in this forum and especially for Columbia.
I turned in my application in December but was never contacted for an interview. Does that indicate anything about my decision status?

^In a word, no. Welcome aboard, and good luck! The good news is that you’ll know your results in several days.

About a week and a day isn’t it now??

Would they consider me a Canadian? (I indicated that I’m Canadian by citizenship …but I go to school in the US)

No they wouldn’t. The admissions officers are divided up by region, and the person looking at you is the person looking at the rest of your school and the region your school is in. The people in charge of parts of Canada won’t look at your application at all.

Everyone who is curious about the state and international demographics at Columbia should look here [Admission Statistics | Columbia University Office of Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/applications/stats.php)

I found this to be a little helpful (I like NYU’s map better) and encouraging. The number of kids from my state has given me hope since Columbia says they seek to increase their regional diversity.

Ugh. Those stats are not helpful to me at all, seeing as I’m from New York (albeit upstate). It’s been a few years since someone from my school has been accepted to Columbia, though… maybe there’s hope…

Columbia is my first choice. I should have applied ED but went Questbridge instead.
Sigh, I doubt I’ll get in.

@ylmc- lol i doubt it. you do realize arizona is one of the dumbest states. most kids go to asu to party and get drunk. i’m not from here. i just happened to move here lol.
