OFFICIAL: RD Applicants Thread to Columbia College (Class of 2014)

I was sent an email offering time slots over the phone, but not everyone gets them.

Hmm… ok. Thanks!

@Jisonfire you were offered a phone interview? Do you think there is a difference between an actual interview or an over the phone one?

Sadly I wasn’t offered an interview but I hear that phone interviews are pretty much just like an actual interview. They’ll probably ask you the same questions over the phone and in person.

Is anyone considering doing any sports at Columbia?.. I mean IF we get in!

This is my first appearance on the thread, so I thought I’d introduce myself.
I applied to Columbia RD with all my stuff sent in by Nov. 15 (my self-imposed deadline). I did have an interview in early December, and it went great. My interviewer had a thing for some wild analogies, and he had the unfortunate inability to stop talking. But he was a nice–no, a great–guy. :D

This morning I woke up (well, technically I never went to sleep but that’s besides the point) and after being hyped up from watching the Olympic figure skating final and caffeine, I got my likely letter in the email. Any other likely letter recipients?

Oh, and my stats are available upon request.

I got a letter too,( in email so far). It was for Columbia college. Was yours for CC or SEAS. There are some other people who got likelies under the thread “OMG i’m in:) likely letter!!”

@ksarmand What exactly does the likely letter say?

Dear ksarmand ,

I am writing to inform you that your application to Columbia University has been carefully evaluated and that you have earned designation as a likely candidate for admission to Columbia College. As long as our midyear review finds that you are maintaining your current level of academic progress and good standing, you can expect to receive favorable word when admissions packets are mailed on March 31st.

The Committee on Admissions was deeply impressed with your scholastic and personal achievements, and we look forward to all you might add to our rich campus community. I offer you my sincere congratulations on your accomplishments thus far and eagerly anticipate those that lie ahead.

If we can be of any help to you, please do not hesitate to contact the Admissions Office at ugrad-ask@columbia.edu or 212-854-2522. Please save these dates for Columbia College Days on Campus for admitted students: April 11th and 12th or April 18th and 19th, when events will include a hosted overnight visit, a chance to sit in on classes, tours of New York City and much more. I hope you can join us.

All of us here wish you the best during the exciting months ahead.

Sincerely yours,

Jessica Marinaccio
Dean of Undergraduate Admissions

P.S. A hard copy of the above was mailed to you today.

^I am so jealous. but congrats!!

just got a likely letter by email (for SEAS) today :)

congratz to all that received a likely letter. I envy you lol. To all that are still waiting, have hope and I’m sure things will work out. appx a month left till decisions.

good luck!!

@tywish: Yeah, I was strongly considering doing sports. I normally do XC and track for indoor and outdoor. But I don’t think I’d join the official team or anything; I’m more inclined towards club & intramural sports. How about you?

Can those who got likely letters post their stats?

Go to the likely letter thread.

@ksarmand: yea, I know what you mean I’m a swimmer but dont know if I want to be on the varsity team. I’ve talked to the coach at columbia and he said hed help my application along but still… idk I’ll decided when I get in;)

Hi everyone, I applied to columbia and am now awaiting the regular decision letter. I didn’t receive a likely letter, but do you think I have a chance of getting in? I’m an

-Hispanic girl, first in family to go to college. I’m from Long Island and was stupid enough that I didn’t apply through HEOP.
-96 unweighed and 98 weighed average
-31 ACT
-1990 SAT; 770 chemistry SAT II; 740 US History SAT II; 690 Math 1 SAT II

  • AP World: 4
    -AP US history: 4
    -AP Italian: 5
    -AP Chemistry:5

    -AP scholar with Honor (collegeboard)
    -National Hispanic Scholar (collegeboard)
-women in science society award by st john’s university(chemistry and math)

-I was just accepted into cornell college of arts and science (Got in through HEOP).
-also applied to barnard, dartmouth, upenn, and nyu.

Do I have a chance of getting into Columbia???

Unless its for HEOP I honestly think you wont get in. Your lucky enough to get into Cornell. But then again your a female and a hispanic.

@andrea_barr1

I think I’ll disagree with Ones, saying that there isn’t much of a gap at all between the selectivity of Cornell and Columbia. If you aren’t absolutely outstanding as a candidate, you’re in the humongous pool of candidates that compile the majority of the student body at both schools. Your SAT scores are a little low, but everyone has a weak area. Your grades are very good, and that’s the most important component. Your heritage will definitely help too, so I think your chances are about the same as the average applicant to Columbia.

hi, i got a likely earlier this month to columbia college so i think i’ll take a stab at chancing u…

to start, i think ur sat scores r kinda low (i had a 2310, but i’m international, so its prob way harder for me)

ur ecs arent that focused in an area, so thats not gonna distinquish u from the pool.

on the plus side, ur grades are decent, u live on long island and ur a hispanic female. that might pull u up…

good luck!
