[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Nope
[] Intended Major: Considering Biology or Psychology, but going Undecided. Considering minors in Literature and French
[] State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
[] School Type: Public, Medium Size (Class of 295, ~1200 students total)

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation American, but both parents did attend prestigious universities in Korea.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Had a great interview, presume recommendations were also excellent, and was proud of both the essays that I submitted. I assume that these as well as my strong SAT scores helped make up for my mediocre GPA and class rank, as well as the fact that I really pulled up my grades junior year after less than exemplary freshman and sophomore years.
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I was very honest in my essays and interview; I’m naturally a very thoughtful and introspective person, and I think I got this part of myself across in both parts of my application. Also, tried to get across that I’m a person with very varied interests, and that a liberal arts school would best suit me.
[] Weaknesses: Weak GPA and Class Rank
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Recommendations, Interview, and Essays primarily.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Wash U. in St. Louis, Boston College, NYU, Rutgers Waitlisted: Northwestern Rejected: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke[/li][/ul]

Numbers

SAT: 2220 (M 720, CR 730, W 770)
ACT: 33 (S 27, R 33, M 33, W 36)
AP: United States History (5)
GPA (non-weighted): 3.9
Rank: 6th percentile

Application

Essay
I felt really good about my common application essay, and my Middlebury supplement.

Recommendations
Well, I know that at least one teacher was authentic in scope and stylistic character, though I fear the other teacher and my counselor wrote the standard, generic recommendations that do little to impress.

Interview
I did not have an interview with this or any college.

Personal Information

Location: Green Bay, Wisconsin
School Type: Public, suburban/urban mix
Gender/Ethnicity: Male/Caucasian
Legacy: None whatsoever. My parents went to technical school and the my mom got her bachelor’s degree going to school part-time
Athlete: I jog, but I don’t participate in school-related activities.
Extra-Curricular Activities: Head of Political Awareness Club, competitor on Math Team and Social Studies Academic Team
Other Factors: I do no volunteering, but I do have a part-time job as an usher at the local movie theater. I am a National Merit Finalist.
Other Colleges: I qualified for fee waivers, so I applied to eleven schools. I was accepted at Amherst, Middlebury, Pomona, Reed, University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin and Weslyan. I was rejected by Bowdoin, Stanford and Yale, and waitlisted at Swarthmore.

I posted this in another thread, but thought it applied here as well.

I wanted to let everyone who was rejected or waitlisted know that I just learned that none of the four applicants I interviewed as an alumni interviewer were admitted. Each one of them was certainly qualified and I was shocked that at least two of them were not admitted. Apparently, even with a slight decline in applicants, the quality of Midd applicants keeps going up and admission just gets more competitive.

[] Strengths: Well-rounded, Extra-curriculars, Essays.
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Tried to be as honest as possible, tried not to make myself seem conceited.
[] Weaknesses: No major awards, recs.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly I don’t know.
[*] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Colgate, Macalester, Carleton, Pomona, Colby, and Oberlin. Waitlisted at Wesleyan, Swarthmore, Dartmouth, & Amherst. Rejected at Williams.

Urban… didn’t you once say that those you’d interviewed in the past had been admitted? If so, that is a fairly large swing. However, when you look at kids accepted at Midd, rejected at Williams, accepted Dartmouth, rejected swarthmore… well, there’s obviously some finer points we dont have a clue as to how they play into the mix. And I will say it again, my son is certainly qualified, but I also think he may have landed on the reader’s desk on a day when the sun was shining.

At the same time, to say that there is a tad of magic once you have the numbers, this is not to take any accomplishment away from those accepted. But you know what? S was rejected from three schools (one being Dartmouth) but the other two with a reputation of being a little large and impersonal, despite academics. He was well within their numbers, but I think just in reading his application they probably could feel he might not be the best fit for them, which would be accurate in my view.

Modadunn, actually in the past my PREDICTIONS had been 100%. The people I felt should be admitted were in admitted, the people I felt should be waitlisted were waitlisted, the people I felt should be denied were denied. I was genuinely shocked by at least two of the decisions this time around.

Things are definitely changing as far as college admissions go. all admitted students should consider themselves very lucky - no matter how qualified you are.

Middlebury has seems to be unique in their admissions process. I have stats much lower, but then again they acknowledged that I come from a low income family, work extra, I am heavily involved in school, etc. Looking at some of these people’s stats I’m surprised that I was accepted.

It is clear you are more than your numbers. And I would say that about everyone. Think about adcoms: How unbelievably boring would a job be that you just looked at the numbers and said yes or no. And while reading all the applications must be a killer, how rewarding to witness those whom you believed in succeed!!! I read on another thread however that in the grand scheme… getting in has now becomes the easy part.

You wouldn’t need adcoms if that’s all they did! You could get a few data entry clerks at $12/hour punch in the numbers, and a computer could spit it out.

Doesn’t matter if you’re making 12 an hour or 120,000 a year… it would still be boring as can be.
