[] Other stats: Legacy (dad went to grad school there)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Church, Debate for CC, Library Volunteer
[] Job/Work Experience: n/a
[] Essays (subject and responses): roommate letter was about getting to know people and Trader Joe's, intellectual interest was about the fact that the US army that freed the concentration camps in WWII was segregated and about US torture policies in Gitmo and Europe and such, long essay was about summer church trip to Poland and cultural misunderstandings/lingustics/ depending on others/mingling and extracurricular essay was about debate and how obsessed with it I am

[] Gender: Female
[] Hooks: national debate award?
[] Strengths/Weaknesses: legacy and valedictorian and unique EC/I didn't even take the stupid Math IIC (as you can see, I suck at math, especially in standardized tests) and I thought my essays were the WORST for any application i sent out
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I HAVE NO IDEA! no seriously, after I was rejected from both H and Y (the schools that I thought I wrote the best application essays for) yesterday I lost all hope for S, but I guess the Lord wanted me there...
[/ul]
Other Factors:legacy? **
**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:The Lord or fate or whatever you believe in will get you where you need to go. I didn't get into HY because He didn't think I should go there, and that I would be miserable there. One year from now, this will all be gone and won't matter. Though it may not seem like it, where ever you end up will be the place where you need to be.
I almost quit this application even though it was my childhood dream (my dad was alumni, hence he influenced me, but last year I started hating on S...) and I was very much in love with Y, but I guess this is the way things are supposed to be...

Number of apps from my school: ** Around 10 - my school has a consistently good relationship with Stanford.[/li][li] ** Prospective majors listed on app: ** Economics[/li][/ul]
Subjective:[ul]
[li] ** Essays:
I liked them, but apparently they didn't fit their tastes.[/li][li] Teacher Recs: ** Both should have been raves.[/li][li] *Counselor Rec: * I didn't read it, but it was probably pretty unexceptional and standard. Each counselor has hundreds of students to take care of and probably up to 100 senior college recs to write. I know him pretty well, though, and he should have good things to say about me.[/li][li] *ECs listed on app: *[/li]Piano (10 years)
Varsity Swimming (3 years)
French Club President and VP
DECA Treasurer
School Newspaper copy editor and reporter
Volunteering at local library
Progressive Youth of America (political awareness group)
[li] ** Work Experience: ** Casting internship for a cirque production company that usually takes only college interns.[/li][li] ** Hook (if any): ** None apparently[/li][/ul]
Location/Person:[ul]
[li] ** State or Country:
Washington[/li][li] School Type: Large suburban public, 1800+[/li][li] Ethnicity: Chinese[/li][li] Gender: ** Female[/li][/ul]Other Factors:** Strong test scores and academic record and courseload all through high school. Weaknesses could be not enough sparkle and leadership in ECs, few high-level awards. And probably my essays did not stand out enough.
General Comments: Congrats to those admitted, and for those who didn't get in, prestige isn't all that matters and I'm sure you'll be
happy wherever you end up! Besides, wouldn't you rather go to a school that truly appreciates and values you for who you are?
Remember, :D ** Individuals determine destinies, not institutes. ** :D
It's been quite a ride, and I've enjoyed it with all of you!

Decision: Rejected

Stats:
SAT: 2200 (790 M, 700 CR, 710 W)
SAT IIs: 740 MII, 710 Chem
GPA: 4.55 weighted, not dure about unweigted
Rank: 20 out of 495
Other stats: APs: 5 calculus AB 4 on US History

Subjective:
Essays: they weren't great. I used a recycled one that didnt really fit
Teacher Recs: these were really good
Counselor Rec: im not sure, but probably pretty generic
Hook (if any): nothing

Location/Person:
State or Country: New Jersey
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male

Extracurriculars: Pretty weak here, but a good amount of community service, a few clubs, and tennis team. Lots of Work experience.
Why I think I was accepted/deferred: I didn't put enough time into the application.
Other Thoughts: I'm really not bummed at all. Congrats to all those who got in, but I was set on Northwestern before I found out from Stanford. It might sound crazy but i prefer Chicago's weather.

Hey SuperDimer, i am in the exact same boat as you: I have to choose between Computer Science at MIT or Stanford.
both have pros/cons : MIT is nice and hands on/hard core science, while Stanfords got the weather and close to home more and more chill atmospher. Are you going to the admit weekends for both? I will probably go to both then decide! :)
It is very surprising some people got rejected with good stats.
So its all based on Essay/letters of rec/Context... almost everyone has the grades/SAT!

Go to Stanford! Not that it really matters, but Stanford's CS department has been the top in the country for... how long? (Granted MIT has a pretty damn good department too) I'm sure there are tons of especially great job opportunities coming from Stanford. Stanford also has happy students who really love their life at college. Like EVERYONE at Stanford loves it. So with just as great academic departments plus happy students... how is that a hard decision? :) Congrats!

Waitlisted.

I don't really feel like posting my stats; they're not fantastic or anything.
But I did have really great essays, a wonderful teacher recommendation, and I auditioned for them (theatre) which I think helped.

Honestly, I'm so thrilled to be on the waitlist. It's a huge accomplishment for me, so it's a good place to be.

Congrats to everyone.
To the other waitlisted applicants... and now, we wait.

I have a similar problem to you guys. Except I have to choose between Stanford and Oxford. Oxford with all its prestige and alumni, glorious architecture and beauty, and its amazing list of alumni. But then I want to go to Stanford because I'm not really sure what I want to do (at Oxford I have to do engineering) and because it seems like so much fun. What to do what to do

I think that if you really aren't sure you want to do engineering it could potentially be a problem to go to a college where you are locked in to an engineering program. Prestige and alumni are bad reasons to pick one college over another. If you feel like Oxford is a better match for your personality and your interests go with it. I can promise you that if you go to Stanford you won't regret it :)

I haven't gotten a letter yet...
