***Official Stanford 2013 SCEA Decisions****

i agree, your race and locations arent halping things
but compounded on that, you have relatively little EC's
and community service?

but nonetheless, I thought a month ago that you had a much better chance than I!

alright, thanks Oprah!
I'll try to put myself in a different light in my essays, focus more on my ECs and my commitment to them.
hopefully i will fare better at HYP, but i always envionised myself at stanford.

BALLS!@

Decision: Rejected

Stats:

[ul]
[] SAT: 2400 (single sitting)
[] SAT IIs: 800 Math II, 800 Literature, 760 World History
[] GPA: 11.42 out of 12 (unweighted)
[] Rank: 1/107
[li] Other stats: 240 PSAT sophomore year/230 PSAT junior year, 35 ACT, 5's on US History, Calculus BC, and English Language, 4 on Art History[/li][/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Among the best I've ever written, I had quite a few people read them with very positive receptions
[] Teacher Recs: Excellent
[] Counselor Rec: Excellent (he read me portions after he submitted it...very positive)
[] Hook (if any): none, I guess
[/ul]

Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Midwestern USA
[] School Type: Private, one of the top schools in the nation
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[/ul]

everyone needs a hook no matter who they are. Theres high gpa and sats but many people are riding that hook.

Asians got shafted at Stanford...my sympathies for all the deferred/rejected (you guys are really overqualified so you'll have no problems at all come RD)...wow I'm glad I'm done with this brutality...

"everyone needs a hook no matter who they are. Theres high gpa and sats but many people are riding that hook."

What do you mean "riding that hook?" There are plenty of applicants who got in with no hooks.

"everyone needs a hook no matter who they are. Theres high gpa and sats but many people are riding that hook."

Apparently theres someone on CC who has EVERY SINGLE hook that I do, but scored more than 200 points higher on the SAT and was deferred!!!!???? I was admitted. I dont even understand that.

its not about GPA or SAT or anything... its truly a holistic process, and if you don't come off as unique or special then you won't get in. It takes more than a 2400 SAT or a 4.0 GPA, it takes more than positive teacher recs... it takes teacher recs that say something significant, that show you aren't just another one of their greatest students, it takes essays that blow people away and show something great, show some potential of some sort. I got in with slightly less than a 3.8 GPA, I'm a white male... it was because of my essays, it was because of what my teachers and guidance counselors said in their rec, and its about what I did outside of school and the impact I had. You can say the admissions process is arbitrary or that people are riding their hooks, but the only hook that isnt fair or earned is URM status, the rest people work for and rightly deserve to get in on.

Decision: Accepted

I personally don't think that I could have gotten in without being a first generation and low income student.
For those who were rejected/deferred, don't give up hope just yet. You guys are all amazing and I am positive that you will be accepted by a great school.

@OPRAH!: I love you too. xD

Doesn't Stanford emphasize leadership way more than other top schools? I heard that somewhere, so it might be the reason a lot of otherwise top kids (with very good ECs) got rejected.

My primary extracurricular is student government (class president for 2 years, student government vice president), along with theater, and I got rejected...I'm not sure about leadership.

Yeah, I recognized that. I have no idea anymore.

Decision: Accepted

Essays (subject and responses): Amazing! I smile eveytime I read them. This was a major part of my application because my essays were personal, showed my quirky side, and let Stanford know of how I would contribute to their community.
Teacher Recs: Great; both said I was one of the best students they've encountered.
Counselor Rec: Same as above.

I am extremely humbled by Stanford's decision as well as by all of the amazing people in this forum. Congrats to those accepted and good luck to those who weren't!

Wait, you got in without taking the SAT? That's very impressive.

I took the ACT; I forgot to list it. I got a 27, though.

^

I got in without taking the SAT Subject tests, but I do not think it is possible to get in without taking the SAT (unless you took the ACT of course)...

Being accepted obviously makes me feel good.........but i'm no fool. My urm status CLEARLY did the job. Dont get me wrong, I worked hard beyond belief to even have a chance at this but seeing 2300 after 2300 after perfect ap scores after prestigious awards get rejected left and right....... my heart goes out to you all.

Finally someone recognizes the importance of their URM status. None of that "I think being Native American, African American, Alaskan, and Haitian kinda-maybe helped my application" bs.

Does anyone know what the Jewish population at Stanford is? I've heard rumors that Stanford "likes" Jews and tends to not like Asians (as we can somewhat lean to from the results).

Fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
rejected

im sure the jewish population is over represented, just as the asian population is
