Wow. This thread is so barren. "Stanford Slaughter" is right. I don't know much about previous years' admissions, but it seems that a lot of incredibly qualified people got rejected, relative to previous years. Anybody have any idea why? I mean, Stanford's always been like the hooks and essay school, but this year is just...

i hope this works!!

i didn't apply yet (i'm doing RD) but i'm looking through this thread and WOW... Stanford admissions must be on something this year. i've never seen so many 2300 SATs get rejected. Good God...

i guess Stanford sees something that we don't, because i can't even fathom how some of you guys were rejected. i guess i should be encouraged because it seems most URMs are getting in, but i am really SHOCKED.

all i can say is just keep your head up and put your all into the rest of your applications, because most of you guys could def get in at the other top schools in the country.

SAT IIs: World History: 800 Math II: 770 Physics: 700
GPA: 3.88
Rank: Top 5%, most rigorous courseload
Other stats: 5's on APUSH, World Hist., English Language. 4 on Physics B.
[ b]Subjective:**
Essays: Everyone thought they were really good
Teacher Recs: One amazing (I've seen pieces of it), one very good
Counselor Rec: Probably good, don't know for sure.
Hook (if any): I thought having multiple national and international awards in writing would help
[ b]Location/Person:**
State or Country: NY
School Type:Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender:M
Other Factors: My school typically sends one or two to each of the HYPM each year, but Stanford has accepted like 3 kids in the last twelve years. I guess they just don't like me or don't like my school.
General Comments: Oh well, time to move on.

I'll preface by saying that I'm a Yale SCEA hopeful.

...

The hell is this thread? What exactly is Stanford trying to do? Are they really going to be able to fill a class during the regular period with better kids than they rejected? Looking back at archived Stanford SCEA results this isn't totally bamboozling (Stanford has always had a system that makes no sense with these profiles), but I just don't understand some of this. I can spot the errors in some of those who didn't get in (I found a lack of substantive extracurriculars to be a recurring theme), but with a couple exceptions, the acceptees (congrats to you all, sorry for doing some bashing, but you just got into stanford so you can take it haha) don't seem to blow anyone away on paper either. Those rejected seem to be almost universally stronger than those deferred. I'm really scratching my head.

My heart goes out to all those who got bad news, and please don't construe his as a personal attack on anybody. I just don't understand what they're looking for. Teacher recs can't differ by too much, counselor recs can't always be taken into account (big public schools, etc.), and essays are really subjective.

Decision: Deferred

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2260 SAT (770 M, 720 CR, 770 M)
[] SAT IIs: 800 Math IIC, 800 Biology E, 760 U.S. History
[] GPA: 3.8weighted/4.3unweighted (toughest courseload)
[] Rank: 19/650
[] Other stats: 34 ACT
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: My personal statement was really good... the shining part of my application. My short responses were definitely eye catching/interesting... the why stanford one wasn't quite as strong as the others.
[] Teacher Recs: My biology teacher's rec was strong while the English teacher's I don't know about. My UCSF professor's should have been good as well.
[] Counselor Rec: Strong
[] Hook (if any): 1st Generation?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: California
[] School Type: Best in area (we send a couple to Ivies/Stanford each year)
[] Ethnicity: Asian Indian
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors: I had published research and a pretty strong list of ECs to back me up...
General Comments: I always thought that my GPA would hold me back significantly as well as being an Asian and from California. Rejection was the first thought but I always had that glimmer of hope. I guess deferral is meh and I don't know what it means on a more large scale of application in the RD pool. Seems to me as though a LOT of more qualified people than me got outright rejected so I guess I have something good going for me which Stanford liked. I think this also taught me that GPA/test scores don't mean anything and that I'm not crazy for wanting to apply to the upper-end schools given my lower end GPA. I'm going to continue applications ... congratulations to those who got in and good luck for those who still are applying!

i think you're right, miles.
seems to me like stanford had tuft's syndrome this year.

Well, looking at Chaucer's profile, so much for the essays. This is just incomprehensible. What are the adcoms looking for? I'm not one of those rabid anti-AA people, but looking at some of these decisions, it seems like URM is playing a big role.

I don't know much about previous years' admissions, but it seems that a lot of incredibly qualified people got rejected, relative to previous years. Anybody have any idea why?<<

Well, remember that this is only the second admissions cycle after Harvard and Princeton did away with their early programs. So for the HYPS applicant crowd that leaves Y and S in the position to skim the cream of the cream of the EA crowd. And they clearly define "cream" as more than just grades and test scores.

There will be a different dynamic in play in RD when H and P rejoin the contest.

i completely agree with the fact that it does seem random
but i assure you that they had a reason; they wouldn't randomly defer or reject people based on their whim
i mean, ive heard that stanford's really big on diversity, in all forms, and the uniqueness of your personality
but i sympathize with you all
honestly, if this process was based on academic aptitude alone, i would be at the bottom of the pile!

"honestly, if this process was based on academic aptitude alone, i would be at the bottom of the pile!"

That makes two of us.

"but with a couple exceptions, the acceptees (congrats to you all, sorry for doing some bashing, but you just got into stanford so you can take it haha) don't seem to blow anyone away on paper either."

I don't think this is true at all, for one. Many of the acceptees, and rejectees as well, had AMAZING profiles. Second, Stanford has always made a point of not caring too much about stats beyond great GPAs (and test scores, to some degree...). So the fact that they look good on paper is only a very small part of the admissions decision.

"I'm not one of those rabid anti-AA people, but looking at some of these decisions, it seems like URM is playing a big role."

I completely agree, but you have to qualify it. URM is playing a big role for the URMs who got in perhaps. But there are enough admits who DIDN'T have any hooks that you can't really say that about the whole applicant pool.

From this thread, I could see many cases where a rejected and accepted person could be switched... What's really annoying is that you don't know specifically what's lacking that made them reject you. Could one of your teachers or counselor not strongly recommend you for the college? Even simply pointing in a general direction like "we wanted to see more of yourself in essays" or even "deficient writing section" would be so much helpful for other Regular schools. Right now I don't even know if maybe my counselor doesn't like me (since its a big public and we aren't allowed to meet our counselors) or if my essays suck. sigh

I'm even more confused that Stanford wants to expand its classes but for 2013 it has decided to SHRINK its admitted pool...???
