***Official Stanford 2013 SCEA Decisions****

I thought Stanford didn't heavily weigh legacies?

First off, HOLY S---. Countless times during my reading of this thread, I had to scrape my jaw off the floor. So many overqualified candidates got rejected. I was dumbfounded.
Second, I'd like to add Eagle Scout (working on Eagle too) to a list of hooks.
I believe CC had a 3/3 success rate with them in this thread alone.
Almost as good as URM...

^^ One of my friends, who is the valedectorian of our class, is a Stanford legacy and an eagle scout (not to mention countless other ECs/awards) was rejected flat-out. Something is messed up when that happens.

Eagle Scout is anything but a hook, 51,742 guys earned it in 2007....I'd say that the Eagle Scouts got in because they presented Stanford with a good package, however, they did not get in due to Eagle Scout membership...

I have a friend who is like super legacy. Both her sisters go to stanford and her family all the way back to her great grand parents on both sides went to Stanford. She got accepted.
She was a good student and all but nothing special at all.
I think that legacy definitely matters....especially when it is like super legacy

yeah, i agree that legacy definitely can be an important factor in decisions. i have a friend who i envy because he has 36 close relatives who have attended stanford. yet he got into annapolis, but getting into stanford for him would have been cake walk

All legacies from Stanford received a letter saying that in the recent past, the acceptance rate for legacies has been at least twice that of non-legacies. So yes, being a legacy helps.

EDIT: I say this because I received one, and I'm only a single, graduate legacy, so I'm sure everyone else got one too.

I agree...
selecting a student just because he is black or other minority is as racist as not selecting him/her because of it.
well we have to face it

So being a URM (Hispanic) really does help?

My mom tells me it doesn't, and that I shouldn't get my hopes up. lol.

I think it's because she thinks of all the discrimination she received upon arriving to this country that she refuses to believe that such a white country would actually help a minority in any way.

EDIT: I'm not saying,"OMG EVERYONE IS AMERICA IS RACISSSSTT!" I'm just saying that I didn't know that being a URM could be such a huge hook.

off topic..did anyone else not get the email friday? i didn't and i'm freaking out right now. i was wondering why some received it and some didn't receive it. any thoughts?

OK Guys, there's always next year!

... oh wait...

The whole debate between theseawolf and amicw and others is interesting. My 2cents: you are both right.

theseawolf, if you want to test amicw assertion that race was indeed a significant factor in your Stanford admission, do this: Apply to 3 ivy league schools with your race disclosed, apply to other 3 ivy league schools with your race not disclosed. Check out how the admission outcome and share it here. (My opinion will coincide with amicw here)

I believe you are more than qualified for Stanford. Perhaps, Stanford admission criterion is not who has the best stats coming in, but amongst all qualified people who has the most potential of successs AFTER graduating from Stanford.

For example, (and as an example only), if both theseawolf and amicw got the same education from Stanford, Stanford has determined that theseawolf WILL be more successful compared to amicw after graduating (and possbily while at Stanford). And therefore if they have one spot, they picked theseawolf.

Quite frankly, I will bet on Stanford being right here. (No offense to you amicw, I am only using your name as an example).

ive got to say, amicw is really ****ing me off.
just accept that you are NOT stanford material. i dont mean SCORES or ECs. i mean as a person, you do NOT fit in to the unit of Class '13 that they are looking for. for better or for worse, Stanford obviously are looking for different people

earth to people!!!! what size was ur email? and what was your decision?

Thanks harryjj0.

As a URM, I feel really offended and targetted by his posts. Statistically speaking, URM's get lower test scores, make lower incomes, and attend college at abyssmal rates (compared to whites). I'm not going,"Oh boohoo me I've suffered" but honestly, URM's do NOT always have a natural advantage. If anything, there are several socioeconomic disadvantages to overcome to get into the good schools, get those grades, take those classes, make those SAT scores.

My family could not afford the 1000-2000k for SAT prep. I took the SAT once, and got just below a 2200. Not a 2400. Not a 2300. My family can't afford to send me to spend summers at different universities, to go abroad, to send me to Thailand to build houses so I can have cool community service activities to put on my app lol. I can't even afford college. That includes state universities (Thank goodness for state university scholarships lol).

The point is, yes, I am economically disadvantaged compared to many who had the opportunities to pay lots of money to participate in awesome activities that will land on their resumes. But despite that, I've done good things. I've tried. I've worked hard. I've done things because I've wanted to, because they've come from my heart, and not because they'll look nice on a piece of paper. And hopefully, that will get me somewhere. (I did not apply to Stanford SCEA, so I do not know if I'm in or not yet lol).

amciw is honestly just extremely bitter over what happened to him
and saying that your posts arent intended to be rude dont mean that they arent!

yeah, he was pretty much racist in his comments about URMs.

he just needs to kick back with some weed

Lightblue, I am in agreement w/ you.

Wow, this thread has gone from interesting to just... pathetic?

For the record...don't attribute all test scores to prep classes...I didn't take any classes, nor did I read any books for the tests.
