*Official* Stanford REA 2015 Applicants' Discussion Thread

^I’m having the same problem, but with the intellectual vitality essay. It seems like intellectual vitality can be interpreted in a lot of different ways…

Funnily enough, I’m having trouble with the Why Stanford essay. I had written a halfway decent essay, but today the admissions officer for my school gave a presentation and now I don’t know if I should write a new one or not. :\ Luckily I have time since I’m submitting RD. Good luck to you guys though. Those two (intellectual vitality and the roommate letter) were really cool to work with for mine. Fortunately one of my major ECs played into the former really well and life experience was able to work with the latter.

Do you know if more weight is given to the main essay (the CommonApp one) or to the supplements? Because I think I have a pretty good CommonApp one, but for some of the supplemental essays mine feel…inadequate. :frowning: (Although I am going to revise them)

^

I think they are given almost equal weights. It goes without saying, but do the best that you can. With a depressingly low acceptance rate, I don’t think any one of us (unless with a pure hook of some kind) can guarantee acceptance.

Goodluck :)

Wulfran: I’m from North Dakota! :D

Hi guys :slight_smile: I’m kind of new to this whole thing (recommended by a friend who graduated high school last year), but love the idea. I’d love to talk personally with any of you about this (I could talk forever), so is anyone willing to message me and chat? Just want to bounce some ideas off of someone in a similar situation.

^

I think it’s better if we stick to the thread for now. :)

Well apparently posting essays isn’t exactly kosher :stuck_out_tongue: I’m not too worried about all the other stuff, just trying to work as hard as I can on the application. And for me, that’s including lots and lots of others’ opinions.

Oh wow, that sounded really cocky when I said I wasn’t worried about applying. I’m quite worried about applying. But I’m putting all that worry into my application instead of worrying externally :P

that’s great! But I don’t think many of us are worried about applying either. The worry comes with that e-mail they send on Dec. 13ish… :p

I agree… and I’d be surprised if anyone else on this thread didn’t agree as well :D

P.S. Is it really the 13th? The Stanford website says they send them out on the 15th…

Hello! Also an REA + music supp. applicant.
Just had my live audition yesterday! Whew, I’m forever done with the application portion of Stanford! Now gotta file the CSS Profile though.

In case you find this interesting,
the girl behind me in the check-in line for the live audition flew from Canada.
I live fifteen minutes from Stanford. That’s why I live auditioned for piano.
:open_mouth:
Already sensing the intensity of applicants…

Wow. “Intense” sounds like the right word… o.o

I was originally going to do a music supplement too, but decided that since music isn’t my primary EC, it wasn’t very necessary. I’m planning on sending a recording to my RD schools though :p

Ah, I see!
I’ve been playing since I was three, so it means very much to me.
But more than that, it was REALLY neat to talk to the music professors! I was examined by Sr. Prof. George Barth, and he was so kind! Today really made me wish that I would get into Stanford…
I also recorded mine, but I used my Canon so crappity crap crap quality. ><

Now you’re making me want that acceptance letter more than ever ;)

@OpalDragon regarding roomie essay…

I had three drafts.
First draft had random facts about myself.
Second one focused more on specific passions of mine.
Third one, which I submitted, combined both.

It’s really up to you, though. It’s YOUR essay. It’s just another opportunity for you to show Stanford another side of you.
Make it shine. :)

@fledgling
Don’t we all…hahaha.
Mid-December, get that acceptance letter, and be forever finished w/ college woes. Not sure bout you guys but there is a worry of mine that I’ll be rejected from all schools.
Highly unlikely since I’m guaranteed for Davis, but still. It’s pretty hard to ignore that devil’s voice of mine.

Eh, probably not likely to happen to me. I’m taking extra steps to make sure there will be at least one place that will accept me. My safeties are UC Irvine, Boston College, and Northeastern. The nice thing about them is that I love both California and the Boston area, so I really wouldn’t mind attending either one of those :slight_smile: Plus, Northeastern gives pretty generous merit aid.

@ripemango regarding intellectual vitality

I wrote about a nice thought to chew on…which happened to be one of my passions.
Essentially, it should be somewhat arguable/discuss-able; otherwise it wouldn’t need the “intellectuals,” right?

@fledgling
Nice! That’s really smart of you, unlike me.

My problem is, I only have one “safety,” which is Davis.
I’m also applying RD to Rice, Princeton, Columbia, UC Berkeley/LA, UChicago, Wash U in St. Louis, and Duke.
All are quite competitive :confused:
but I honestly wouldn’t mind going to Davis. A bunch of my friends go there, and they love it!

BUT obviously, first choice Stanford.
S marks the Spot. :]
