Official thread for 2.5-3 year transfers

It’s not a negative. It can be positive. If you had to take remedial classes and reached the point where you satisfied all math pre-reqs, it shows the ability to overcome adversity.

I hope so. I have never been good at math. Do u think they might sympathize if I got maybe a c or two in the hard math classes? Cause I worked my way up from the bottom?

IVC all the way! will be finding out in the next 2 days if i’ll be a laser for another year!

I would be a 3 year, but I took the assessment, tested out of intermediate algebra, jumped into Pre-Cal and applied to UCSD with that as my math requirement. Got accepted.

Don’t let counselors fool you into thinking you have to wait until Pre-Req’s are done to transfer. UCSD’s tag applies only to IGETC and a 3.0. And TAG won’t be around forever. I heard 2011-2012 will be the last year. So I recommend if in this November, you know you’ll have a UC Math done in Fall and IGETC done by spring 2011, apply in October 2010 for UCSD 2011 because if TAG changes, you might turn a 3 year transfer into a 4 year.

I know that would’ve been the case for me. Plus, imagine what you can accomplish by spending that third year at UCSD. You might think, “It’ll be more expensive”, oh will it? Depends on income.

How much do your parents make? How old are you? I’m low income so UCSD and California and the Federal Government are picking up the check. I’m taking out zero loans. But on the other side of the coin, how much more would you get done at UCSD versus IVC? More classes, more opportunities, quarters versus semesters.

Anyway, not to smash your three year plan, but don’t think you need to finish all the pre-req’s to get accepted. Plenty of people have gotten into Davis and Irvine without all their pre-reqs or TAG agreement. UCSD doesn’t require pre-reqs for their tag. If you have a good GPA, IGETC will be done in spring, at least apply to UCSD + three safeties.

IVC LASERS! I can’t be one for another year! I’m sorry.

Haha what semester what u guys in? 2nd here.

@essenar:

holy ****!!! Is that true about tag? Where did you hear that, got proof?

[Transfer Admission Guarantee: Fall 2011](http://www.ucsd.edu/prospective-students/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/transfer/tag.html)

The fine print, is what it does NOT say.

UCSD is the only UC that doesn’t require a TAG contract with your community college.

At my old community college, the counselor I spoke with told me I “needed” to complete all my pre-reqs before transferring or I wouldn’t qualify for TAG.

However, when I checked UCSD’s website, all it said was completion of IGETC, Math by Fall prior, English by Spring prior and 60 transferable credits.

So I did what any go getter would do: I asked a different counselor from a different college. She smiled and said, “You don’t have to complete your prerequisites, just IGETC with a math in Fall and you can apply with TAG.” I was stoked and filled out my application.

Counselors don’t tell you this, because:
A) They are instructed not to, because either it makes the school look bad that it’s sending ‘unprepared’ students or because they lose money if students don’t take the courses there.
B) They don’t really understand the transfer system on a school by school basis and make blanket generalizations.

Either way, in conclusion, you should not trust everything a counselor says because their words aren’t worth their weight in gold.

I was actually asking about the part where u said Tag might only last till 2011

but I didn’t know that about ucsd tag either. Is that the only uc where u can do that? That’s really good to know…that way I’ll have two choices…transfer to SD in 2 yrs or stay for a 3rd then try for LA. If i’m really desperate to get out of irvine maybe I’ll just go to sd. :)

Wait, where did you hear about TAG ending? Has anyone else heard that this will be the last year?

Considering they just took the time to implement a new TAG system for all UCs, I don’t think it’s going anywhere.

Silly speculation, and yes it’s possible to stay 3+ years if you’re stuck with certain prereqs - I wanted to be an engineer and started out with Intermediate Algebra.
1- Int Algebra
2- Trig
3- Precalc
4- Calc 1
5- Calc 2
6- Calc 3, Linear Algebra
7- Differential equations, discrete math
(finished!)

That’s 3 and a half years, 3 if you manage to get some of those over the summer, 4 if you screw up along the way and have to drop a class (remember, engineers take physics and there’s those times).

Perhaps it proves the opposite - one has persistence. Believe me, if 4 years into it you’re still going for the gold you’ll look damn good XD

Really? When did the new TAG come out? I feel like they would at least announce something at least a year before saying they’re going to discontinue it. How long has it been around, anyone know?

I myself am staying 3 years at a ccc because I messed up my first year and need more time to fix my mistakes.

haha, I’m on year 4 because random personal stuff ‘jumped up and bit me’ and I had to drop classes. Hurray for being there forever >>
